Hello Mia! Congratulations on coming up with this new lesson for me! Sometimes sarcastic expressions could be informative but I am not though. Without any sarcasm I have enjoyed the video! Stick on with the good job!
Sarcasm also works when mean thoughts fill your head. Which happens to me. And i have yet a good example of sarcasm. But it'd be a bit obvious. When someone you don't like says: ''Now i don't have to beat you up'' you have to say: (*sarcastically*) ''Phew. That's a relief. I was sooo terrified''
So apparently when being sarcastic you need to have a 'tell'. Otherwise people won't understand you are being sarcastic and will interpret your sarcasm in another way. Wish I knew that before.
I like to elongate my words or add emphasis on certain words. If you're meaning to be rude, add a scoff or an eye roll with a mean tone. It's about how you say things is what matters most. She's not adding much emphasis on her sarcasm making it hard to tell it's sarcasm. Most people have "a tell" when using it. Adding a smirk and laughing helps if it's more friendly sarcasm. Sorry you had to find that out the hard way from the sounds of it.
it was really great job that you done to make this video about sarcasm , now I have started to use sarcasm everywhere , and sometimes people hate my sarcasm
thank you mia. the topic is so intteresting. before i saw this video, i don't know these two words sarcasm and sarcastic. It's important to have this humor to bright the joyful life. when you say sarcasm, I think about the chandler, who from my favourite series friends. I miss his sarcasm.
Think you ! Before I said to a person 'your country is good because of your contribution. Then he said 'sarcasam' I did not know it meaning until watching your video.
I always face this situation in my job, it is my first time to know saying some phrases to describe my upset, Sarcasm [ it is opposite meaning of real situation Thanks a lot Miaa, you doing great help for me to improve my understanding of English [ it is true ]
such a great lesson, l think these kinda videos explain us of fantastic way things like sarcastic and also we know much better words could surprise, thanks a lot
Karsonian that's real sarcasm it's meant to be taken serious, thats where the real fun is. Imagine when someone got your food burnt and you said wow I think you did that gracefully and the person thought you serious but their is a third person there who got it, real fun
This video was actually extremely helpful!! I'm still curious though, how do you respond to sarcasm?? I feel like I'm getting better at understanding when people are using sarcasm, but what are you supposed to do then? I'm finding that answering with more sarcasm really hinders the conversation and the humor dissolves immediately. I wish I knew what to do because people use sarcasm all around me, and I have no idea how to convey that I understand the joke and I'd love to be a part of the conversation more, but when I do, everyone tells me they were being sarcastic and then I feel stupid :(
That's a great question, Morrigan! Even native speakers have trouble responding sometimes. If you agree with the sarcasm, you can send a small form of sarcasm back, agreeing with what they said. For example, if it's raining, maybe your friend says 'Beautiful weather today'. If you agree that you also don't like the weather, you could respond with: 'Yeah, it's great...' in a sarcastic tone. Does that make sense?
I get annoyed when folks give a statement in the form of a question. It happens far too often. So much so, that sometimes others think that _I_ am doing that. I wonder if some of this is sarcasm and I am not getting it.
Hi Shlisa, some of this is a type of intonation that native speakers give to statements. Usually, the intonation and words used will be falsely happy or excited when really the meaning is of annoyance, anger, etc. when using sarcasm. Thanks for watching!
Is sarcasm used (or as much) in languages other than English? Or are people learning English as a second language also learning sarcasm for the first time?
Hi there. Almost! A sarcastic response might be something like, 'Yeah, you look great" if they really don't. When you say this, you would use a sarcastic tone.
Good question. Native speakers do this often! It is a feature of sarcasm. Sometimes, they say things that they don't really mean and are simply being humorous in some way.

Sarcasm is the language of narcissism. It is used to cut with words.
My colleague always works very hard
Now I most careful talking
OR maybe let them be annoyed
”Genom att komma ihåg de fraserna blir det lättare att vara sarkastisk”
Tja, tack för tipset.
Sarcasm needs wit and humour which adds to the effect. Also downplay or magnify the issue at hand for commical impact. Profanity doesn't work.
Absolutely, Morrigan!
I find this video so sarcastic, I can't stand it.
You're so smart

Oh now I get it. This video is for Sheldon Cooper.

Maybe not, but it's useful to know when someone else is being sarcastic.
Is it sarcastic?:
