People aren't doing it for the price of eggs and they will learn how to do it just like you did. You can't screen who is smart enough to own chickens just like you can't screen who publishes on social media. There is no IQ test for that. People who don't want chickens anymore can learn how to cull them for meat or chicken farmers will be the lucky recipient of more. Either way it's a win. I didn't get any this year even though I wanted to. I decided to support my local chicken farmer instead by buying my eggs from her and they are way more expensive than just buying the plain white eggs at the grocery. But cheaper than the startup costs of raising my own flock. . I'm 68 and not sure I can care for them but I do plant my garden veggies every year. My space is limited so I'm a micro farmer in the city. Let people learn what they want to learn. It's all good.

I have showed my wife this video and I agree with you. My wife and I have been interested in getting chickens for the past few years. This pandemic has helped me to do a lot more research to find out everything that I need to know. This includes the cost for building my own chicken coop. Deciding where I want to place them and the type of feed to feed them. We know that it will not be cheaper but we want to have the chickens around the place and of course have the eggs as well.

My family and I are also in Utah and started raising backyard chickens for the first time this year. We had already been talking about it for the last 2 years but when everything was going crazy with the prices and also in our city we went for nearly a month with all eggs being sold out in stores it solidified our decision to move forward. We werent planning on doing it to try and save money on eggs or anything like that (though eggs being more expensive now defintely made the decision a little easier)...it was more about being prepared to have food protein on hand and also teaching my girls about responsibility and animal care and also where food comes from. We also plan on using our chickens for dual purpose so I want them to understand and develop a respect for that process and the circle of life.

I started with a feral chicken that showed up in my yard 5 years ago. I got a hobby coop for my first Mother’s Day gift. Since then I have had 3 birds at a time. I love my chickens and have been learning about them everyday. This year my husband and neighbor built me my dream coop! 5x5 hen house with a 5x10x6 attached run. We just bout some new pullets and are raising our first round of chicks. We researched the best breeds for our family and have been tracking them down. I’m all for people getting chickens they are amazing, but make sure you educate yourself and do what’s right for the birds.

Given the sequence of current events, I don't think we can expect things to calm down. I am helping a friend of mine to build a small barnyard mix egg/hatchery business in our area so our neighbors have an affordable place to buy eggs and chicks; we are the only people we trust not to price gouge our neighbors. She is 75 years old, and thought this was a better idea than getting back into dog breeding to supplement her pittance of a retirement pension. She is teaching me how to be an effective homesteader inside the city limits of my small town, and I help her do her farm chores so she can continue to live independently for as long as she wants. For me, it isn't about getting "free eggs", it is about knowing EXACTLY where my food came from, what went into it, and the conditions in which it was raised/grown.

Great video man! I think you're on target. I want to see more people being more self-sufficient, but I don't want to see people jumping in before they're ready. You did a great job of presenting that! I do have one point to disagree with... 😉 I think that having chickens is more expensive than buying the cheapest eggs, but I know our pastured eggs are cheaper than buying organic pastured eggs. That's what we would buy if we didn't have our own chickens, but not everybody would, so your point is still correct 😊

I love my chickens, they are pets first, egg-layers second. I started with a rescue-hen about nine years ago, and got a friend for her about six months later, when I was living in town. Now that I am out in farmland, the flock is six, enough for our egg needs. The biggest expense is predator-proofing and housing/run (mine do have free range time).
The rescue hen is still with me, aged about ten and a half. She laid really well until aged eight, then slowed. Currently she is recovering from a broken toe (January).

My husband went to Target the other day, and lo and behold, egg prices dropped from $7.99/dozen back to $3.49/dozen. He even took a photo of the price tag to prove it. So sounds like this was a typical government-manufactured crisis, and they've quietly reversed course.

I spent months and months researching everything I could find on purchasing, carding for, and raising HAPPY HEALTHY chickens. And yes, I’m aware they’re not cheap, however, the 7 chickens we purchased will provide my family with eggs, love, and work/entertainment. I’ve had them about a month and already love them fiercely and am working on a predator proof coop and run. So no, not all city folk are clueless. Most of us older city folks grew up with animals and or helping grandparents with theirs. I am still researching what is best for my chickens and won’t stop researching. No one can ever know everything about anything, but a person willing to study and learn and put into action what they learn, should manage to raise chickens in a healthy and happy manner.

The other side of it is that if anyone wants chickens or eggs then you had better buy now and learn now while you can still get supplies for them … those of us who raise them , incubate them ,use them for eggs and meat realize you have to keep the circle of life happening and that means planting food for them as well … It’s gonna get ugly out there … Raise your own food!!

Your points are valid. Though lots of people get dogs or cats and don't care for them right either, unfortunately. People SHOULD have chickens. It's more than just meat and eggs. They eat scraps that otherwise would be in a landfill. They produce fertilizer that can be used for gardening. They eat bugs and pests. Chickens are an important part of your home's eco system, if you decide to be more natural in your approach to living. I have two coops of chickens. I have and am building my flocks around self sustainability and paying for themselves.
Chickens are not profitable on a small scale, EVER. But if you can get them to pay for their feed, and lower your costs of raising them, you are light years ahead of the people that keep a couple of chickens just for their own egg use. If you are starting from scratch, chickens are VERY expensive to start with. A good coop can easily cost a grand to build and furnish. And that is only an 8x8, with a run, not something elaborate.

I just found your channel, I agree with you on this. People romanticize farming, it's back breaking, smelly, expensive and a lot of work. People have been nagging me to go back into chickens for years. I'm taking the plunge, my incubators are in the mail. For me it's easier, I'm out in the country, I have everything but the birds already. I just didnt want to be tied to the farm that much anymore. But the way things are looking in canada where I live, I think it's the right decision.
Tldr...lol..thank you for being brave enough to tell the truth.

We expanded our garden to 500 sqft this year and got chickens in hopes of this exact reason, becoming more self sustainable. I have done a substantial amount of research and continue to as I type this. My chicks are about 5 weeks going on 6 and its already been an amazing experience. I do agree that I think SOME people are getting chicks for the reason of egg prices, but I would like to think that the majority are doing it for that sustainability, as the people I know with chickens already grow their own food.

I’ve wanted chickens for years. I was lucky enough to find a local breeder and skip all that mess. But for people who are having issues getting chickens, you can order them in the same places you can walk in and purchase them and those will be your birds. There’s a minimum of 10 but maybe you could find someone else to go in on the order with you if you don’t need that many.

Most often.. no. There’s obviously rare occasions that the pop in general has something in it that can hurt them but if it came from a healthy animal they should be fine!

@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead thank you very much for the quick response. We only have 2 older chickens now and I didn't want to kill them off before we get started with littles.

Man I watch your channel because you really know your shit. But you kinda got to me because I'm starting my first 4 flock ever. And you got me second guessing myself. But my intentions were to raise chickens with my wife and 6 year old, learn, have some interesting new pets and hopefully get some eggs! To me it's more about F the man, family time and a Rooster named Little Jerry Seinfeld. I'm still going forward and still watch you. Yeah I thought it was easier said than done at first.

Hey, I got you asking yourself the right questions! It sounds like you’re giving it some REAL thought which is exactly what I wanted to do!
I will say though, coming from a father of 5 I can’t express how amazing it is to watch your kids get excited about the chicks, help you raise them, and ultimately learn responsibility taking care of them WHILE learning an extremely helpful life skill. So hopefully that helps 😂. Whichever way you go with it, I support it!

I wanted hens 10 years ago but my dogs are hunters by breed so I am and have been planning hens for my future. Before all of this happened, I called my city and know all the correct hoops to jump through. I want to build my own coop and am taking a woodworking class this month. My friend has 60 chickens so when I am ready, I will be getting them from her. I believe your prediction is spot on. Love your videos!

Hey thanks! I appreciate you watching them!
Good for you for taking your time and figuring everything out before getting them, I’m excited for when you finally do get them! Good luck!

I like the analogy used here. Same with the COVID dogs and cats and who knows whatever other backyard critter out there. I drove about an hour and 40 minutes...not far from the Pennsylvania state line to gather my pullet orders...9 gals total. It wasn't an impulse buy thankfully, I'm in it for the long haul.

Sucks you had to drive, but I’m glad you found some! That’s awesome! Covid definitely threw a wrench in things, that’s for sure.

I think that might have been a ogden/west haven issue. Layton had plenty of chicks until recently. Not even considering the KSL market.

We are mail ordering our chix this year! We wanted barred rocks and didn't want to fight with the masses.

How many people will keep them after they stop laying. Do Not Buy Them, unless you want pets

I'm gonna eat my chicks no matter what happens, and I will keep them healthy for my tummy.😅
