I was blessed to have watched him play several times against Tulane in New Orleans when I was in high school. We'd show up early just to watch him warm up. He was our idol.
This guy is the Wizard of basketball. The ball obeys his every command. You could practice your whole life and never achieve this kind of mastery. What a legend!!!!!
Keep in mind that at this point in the history of the game, touching anything except the top of the ball while dribbling was a carry. Crossovers and flashy passes were harder to do back then!

So he only played three varsity seasons (89 games) in college yet scored 3667 points, the most of any player EVER in the NCAA! Jimmer had 2599 points in four seasons (139 games) . Pete averaged 44.2 points a game while Jimmer averaged only 18.7 ppg. In Pete's four years in college, he ranged from 43.6 ppg as a freshman to a high of 44.5 ppg as a senior (very consistent). Jimmer ranged from 7.0 ppg as a freshman to 28.9 ppg as a senior. Jimmer had 296 3-point field goals in his four years. Pete had zero, because there was no 3-point rule when he played. But he did take many shots in 3-point range. Somebody went back and reviewed every one of his college games to see how many he actually took and concluded that if the rule was in effect back then, he would have actually averaged between 52 and 54 points per game his entire college career!! Jimmer scored over 50 points one time in college (52). Pete scored over 50 points ten times including three times over 60 (64, 66, 69)! Jimmer was one of the best college players of his era. Pete was the greatest offensive college player of all-time!
@bruce song Pete was an amazing dribbler too. The Harlem Globetrotters actually wanted him to join their team but he chose to go to the NBA. Do a TH-cam search on "Pete Maravich dribbling." He developed amazing ball handling skills shown in several of these videos! You might also want to watch ESPN sportscentury biography of Pete Maravich. Let’s no forget no shot clock. If he played with a 3 point line and a shot clock experts say he would have averaged 55-60. Best scorer in college. No one even in discussion.
Happy that I grew up in that era and got to watch Pistol Pete play along with many other greats. He was a magician with a basketball and handling, and his court awareness was epic. An absolute treasure in the history of American basketball, and a fantastic inspiration to anyone with a desire in this sport. What wonderful memories
Finally I can put a name on this young kid who gave me passion for basketball. 20 years ago I saw "The birth of a Legend" and I started to dribble. Thanks Pete !
Pete was bigger than the game, his unbridled passion , and exuberance was something to behold, an Artist without peer. Hope you are hooping it up in Heaven!
When I was a boy playing ball with my friends, we ALL wanted to play like Pistol Pete Maravich. He meant so much to us. The man he became is only totally honorable. A man unashamed of the Gospel.
Watching this mash up makes me smile. What a pioneer of the modern game. I’ll shut anyone down that says he couldn’t play at elite level in today’s game. 💯
If this man played today, Dick Vitale and ESPN would faint! If he played in the NBA today, he'd be the highest paid player with endorsements gone wild. Incredible, unduplicated talent.
This is sick stuff! I never got to see Pete play at LSU but I did get to see him when he was with New Orleans Jazz on a Thanksgiving night in the mid 70's. He was a treat to watch! Imagine if he'd had the three point line and they would have kept track of assists back in his college days!
According to Wikipedia, he averaged 5..1 assists per game. It has also been widely reported that Dale Brown, using the original 19-9 line, determined that Maravich would have had 13 three-pointers a game.
Probably the best ball-handler of all-time. I should note, for us youngsters, that had he dribbled the way the players do today, he would have been called for carrying. They couldn't dribble with the side of their hands back then, making his ball-handling abilities all the more impressive.
Though he played in a time when most players were white, in terms of all-time production, Pete Maravich was the greatest offensive player ever to play NCAA basketball. His coach at LSU went back and charted every shot he took there and determined he would have averaged thirteen more points a game if they were using the three point line back then. His average would have gone from around 44 a game to 57 points a game. Pretty staggering! But it was the poetry in which he handled and passed the ball that left a far greater impression on me. Even the great Magic Johnson said that Pistol Pete was one of the greatest ball handlers of all time. Of course much can be argued but there is no denying he was way ahead of his time. He had a few amazing years in the NBA before his knee blew out (back then one was never the same after such a surgery). There is a story he told Wilt Chamberlain in a game that the next time he had the ball he was going to take it his way and score over him. Chamberlain allegedly told him to bring it on. Pistol kissed one off the glass high over Wilt's fingers scoring on another one of his circus shots.
It was LSU coach Dale Brown who went back and analyzed Pistol’s shooting and determined he would’ve averaged 57 a game. Pete was coached at LSU by his dad, Press Maravich. Keep in mind that Brown’s analysis occurred when the three point line was at the top of the key and not the line in use today which is about 2-3’ further back. For all of us kids playing jr. high or high school ball back in his LSU days, Pistol Pete was our idol. We read every word we could find about him which included a race to the morning paper to see how many he scored in the previous day’s game. There will never be another like Pistol Pete Maravich.

By the way, there were quite a few black players back then and he still scored 44 points a Game... No 3 pointers and a much better passer than anybody playing today.
Thanks, OnParr, for the video clips and memories. I was at the 69-point game in Tuscaloosa and saw miraculous passing as well as shooting. The pass I remember most was him on a fastbreak with a teammate just ahead on the right. Pete slowed at the top of the key, turned as if to wait to set up an offense, then flip a pass to his teammate under the basket for an easy layup. The Bama defender was caught flat-footed. His teammate obviously was ready for it but not Bama. Not that night.
As 6’5 scrawny white kid in playing Jr. High/High School basketball in Louisiana, Pistol was the player I wanted to be like. I asked for #23 in 7th grade and unlike the other guys that wanted it for Jordan I was the oddball wanting it cuz of Pistol Pete! Can only imagine the points he would’ve scored with the 3 point line. Dude has so many unbeatable career records at LSU! A unique chapter in the evolution of basketball!

Pete wasn’t just a great ball player he was a showman and seeing was believing when it came to Pistol Pete!
Pete Maravich was crazy good. One of the all-time greats with no doubt whatsoever. He could do anything with a basketball and would be a superstar in any era.
I've always heard he controlled the ball like it was an extension of his own body, and its so crazy to actually see it for the first time. Also a thing that I notice was how fast he actually was able to put up all his jump shots, it seemed as if all the ones in this video were just a quick stop into a shot. The man is outstanding, I wish I could have seen him play.
The catch and dish at 4:24 is so fast and fluid. Probably could have done a cool touch pass but he instinctively knew he could pull off the even cooler no-look, over-the-shoulder dish. He knew the defender would never be expecting THAT. Lol. Unreal.
Look up the vid "Bill Walton on Pistol Pete". The LSU coach went through every shot of his college career to find out how many 3 pointers it would have been. He would have averaged 13 3 pointers a game for an average of 56/57 pts a game.
SaintNuke and that is without deliberately posting himself outside what is now a line on the court. He might have doubled that number giving him another 13 points per game! I'd forgotten what a pure shot he had, every time a perfect "gooseneck" follow through.
57 points- per game!!! That is what the calculated out per his average score! HIS AVERAGE score!!!! Imagine a night when his hands were like a volcano?!!!!!!
i just noticed after every quick pass on the fast break he plows over the defenders! Pistol Pete is the Best Shooter, Passer, and Ball-handler of all-time!
If there was a three point line it would've been his range. He still holds the record for the best points average for season and career at 40 something for both. I heard someone went back and watched all his videos from college and if there was a three point line he would've averaged 57 a game!
Wish I could of seen him play more with the Celtics. Pete is so fun to watch on TH-cam and on tv highlights. A man 20 years ahead of his time as a high school , college , and the Pro's.
Pete "Pistol" Maravich was just ridiculous... Please message us a video of Pete doing this, IN THE LAB - THE HARDEN STEP(TUTORIAL) We'd really appreciate it, -Shift Team HQ
I love the ball fakes head fakes the use of the glass. All lost arts. I think he got bored playing against mere mortals and made moves just to entertain himself. So much fun to watch.
This is my favorite mix for a few reasons, I love watching Pete, I never had a chance to watch his college games, and the mix itself is incredible; the music, the clips, the pace, all great. Thank you.
Pete had great court vision and could make some of the best adjustments when making a shot. Players had to respect his scoring prowess, this made it possible for him to make some spectacular passes. Wish you were still with us Pete!
Somebody went thru his college game charts and calculated that if the 3 point line would have exsisted then he would have averaged 57 points a game. 57 points a game!!!
Keep in mind… The Pistol would have averaged 57 PPG with a 3-Pt line for his three years at LSU. Pete’s shots have been plotted by several different people verifying the number.
I was fortunate to see him light up the scoreboard against Alabama in 1969 in Tuscaloosa and his teammates DID know when he was about to pass it to them. I think he scored 59 or 69 that night-a record that still stands for college one-game scoring. Towards the end of the game EVERYONE was cheering for him and LSU-even us Bama fans.

Sarangith Wijesinghe Jason Williams is overrated
Sarangith Wijesinghe Seriously I wouldn't tie Magic Johnson into anything with that thing
JWill+ Curry+ Magic+ God fingers
The legend
to the 40 of y'all that disliked.. a big middle finger to 'ya.
Guarded Soulz Not if you knew what I do.
Like And 1 Mixtapes, only it was the 60's. True legend.
He would have easily made the Harlem Globetrotters. Amazing player!
perfect song, did anyone see the vintage 'CHEST PASS" literally off his chest.
That was just dazzling! Players today can't do shit like that.
He played the game like never before, he brought entertainment, and was and always will be one of the best ever to play the game
did he accurately pass between his legs at a full run, or did I imagine that?
there's a word for that...MIND BLOWING!
I saw the same thing and played it back 3 times. I thought I was seeing things.
He was a human seal
Thanks for posting that. Pete was awesome. A real pleasure to watch.
Pete "Pistol" Maravich was just ridiculous... We recently made a tutorial on doing something we call "The Harden Step" but we're getting numerous comments of people saying, "This is the Pistol Pete move."
Please message us a video of Pete doing this,
IN THE LAB - THE HARDEN STEP(TUTORIAL)
We'd really appreciate it,

I love the ball fakes head fakes the use of the glass. All lost arts. I think he got bored playing against mere mortals and made moves just to entertain himself. So much fun to watch.
Wassup Dev. I see you studying
By far my favorite player of all time. Could run circles around any player today.
You believe that?
Yes, name one player who you thing can do what he did
I'm curious really. Did Magic Johnson have skills like this too?
Not as good
Excelente selección musical, hace aun mejor el vídeo, increíble jugador, es una fortuna el poder verlo aunque solo sea en vídeos.
60 yrs and never seen anybody all around better
This is my favorite mix for a few reasons, I love watching Pete, I never had a chance to watch his college games, and the mix itself is incredible; the music, the clips, the pace, all great.
Thank you.
Pete had great court vision and could make some of the best adjustments when making a shot. Players had to respect his scoring prowess, this made it possible for him to make some spectacular passes. Wish you were still with us Pete!
There is the faintest strain of sadness and melancholy in this excellent video.
With most geniuses, unfortunately, there is always a touch of melancholy.
Amazing smooth operator- always in control while dribbling and shooting. One of the greats for sure- such a pure shot
Pistol Pete's ball handling ability is surpassed only by his passing ability.
I can't figure two of those passes even in slow-motion.
Pete was ahead of the times by a quarter century.
Somebody went thru his college game charts and calculated that if the 3 point line would have exsisted then he would have averaged 57 points a game. 57 points a game!!!
seattwa but you also have to take into account the more possessions back than and lack of defense
thats why im watching this lol
Keep in mind…
The Pistol would have averaged 57 PPG with a 3-Pt line for his three years at LSU.
Pete’s shots have been plotted by several different people verifying the number.
One of the best players ever to play basketball , he has Serbian ancestry. ...:)
Brilliant passer and ballhandler. His teams never won much. Pete won, though, when he accepted Jesus Christ as lord.
Yeah, THAT made him a winner. Anyone can do that basketball nonsense.
It did make him a winner.
otherworld11 Amen, good comment.
I was fortunate to see him light up the scoreboard against Alabama in 1969 in Tuscaloosa and his teammates DID know when he was about to pass it to them. I think he scored 59 or 69 that night-a record that still stands for college one-game scoring. Towards the end of the game EVERYONE was cheering for him and LSU-even us Bama fans.
crazy that he wore #23....coincidence?
and yes i know he was before Jordan's time.
Pistol Pete's passing was as beautiful and wonderous as his shot ! ! !
If there was a 3-point line in the 70's, Pistol Pete would have averaged Jordan-esque scoring numbers every year.
FYI Jordan averaged about 20 points a game in college
Henry Hartley I was obviously talking about Pistol's NBA scoring numbers, his college numbers are untouchable.
Jordan-esque?? Did you forget about Larry Bird?
