I have a little true-life story that may amuse: It was my first day in 8th grade and my first class was “Gym” and we were all lined up around the basketball court waiting for the new “Gym” teacher who was just starting that year. Finally, a 30-ish man with a buzz cut dressed in chinos, gray “Navy” t-shirt and, if memory serves, Joe Lapchick high-tops came onto the floor with a solemn-faced little boy of four, maybe five years in tow. After he introduced himself, he told us our first class was to run laps, which we did and while we trudged our circuits, our teacher proceeded to demonstrate to the lad how to dribble, cut, fake, and shoot and then issued stern commands and corrections as the tyke tried to duplicate his moves. The year was 1952 and the court was Aliquippa High School. The teacher was Press Maravich and the little boy has always held a special place in my heart and I feel so privileged to have witnessed the first day the legendary never-to-be-equalled “Pistol Pete” Maravich set foot on a basketball court. RIP, little lad, you were one of a kind.

Pete: Dribble with my left hand twice, jump up, pass the ball under my right leg and then behind my back, bounce it off the top of the head, bank it off the backboard. Mcadoo: Say what??? -- later -- Mcadoo: Free throw Pete: Huh????
LOL I understand, but this stuff was cool if you were a kid in the 70s. You have to realize there wasn't cable TV and you were lucky to see a national game once a week. I think this is what CBS had during halftime on some of the games.
These friendly H-O-R-S-E competitions back in the day made basketball fun to watch for their fans. TNT Studios with Shaq and company can probably do this today if they wanted to. I admired Pistol Pete and Bob McAdoo. Great basketball legends!
Thought Maravich was taking advantage until his last shot. He finished with a jumper and not one of his tricks that only he could do. That was classy and fair.
Did y’all know that in college, if you take all of Pete’s shot locations and added the 3pt line, that he would AVERAGE, 14 3pt made per game. Which is insane. Bob McAdoo is a great as well, very underrated in my opinion. Had 50 points in a playoff game in 75’. Very soft jumpshot touch for a big guy
Pistol was college basketball's first ever "point a minute" player; scoring more points than minutes played while at LSU. His legendary shootout vs Dan Issell of Kentucky on national TV was incredible.
He still would lose to people such as Scottie pippen, lebron James, Kobe Bryant, giannis antetokounmpo, dirk nowitzki, and probably prime Kareem and Wilt Chamberlain
Pete's dad Press was an assistant coach at NC State. He would drive down streets with his car door open while Pete dribbled a ball. Pete really worked on ball handling skills
Richard Currin But his dad also dictated what school he’d go to so he ended up at LSU and never got to play for a national championship because of the NCAA rules. He could’ve played for the likes of UCLA if he’d told his Dad “no”
Bob Mcadoo is so underrated. Rookie of the year, scoring champion, mvp, and 6th man of the year with the Lakers. He destroyed the taller centres for his size.
those were fun to watch in the 1970's. the nba should bring those events back. i still miss p. maravich. a star that died too young.**** there were loads of great quality players back then.****
Pete’s been gone for along time. Sad life, and died at 40. Never reached his promise in the NBA. But I think he remains the greatest collegiate player of all time. And he was influential-gets huge respect from a lot of NBA greats who came after him.
To me, a competition like this is so much more interesting than a slam dunk contest. All of the dunks of today have been done over and over again already. Just my opinion.
That's my guy Pistol Pete. So smooth with it. Way before J Kidd, Steve Nash, Jason Williams. He had smooth handles and dime passes. Rip Pete Maravich 🏀🙏🏿🙌🏿
Can remember when Bob played for the Buffalo Braves. Scored from anywhere within 25 feet and the announcer would always intone 'that's two, for McAdoo'. Glad he got a ring with the Lakers.
we need more shit like this on all star weekend... even former legends going one on one, like kobe vs jordan, reggie vs kenny, shaq vs chuck... what about 1 on 1 playoffs, with lebron, jordan, kobe, durant, kawhi... better than the 'talent challenge' crap they have now
Comments are funny. Yes, today's players with the benefit of video to teach you, and advanced training techniques out there, have an insane amount of skill compared to players from that era. Long range shooting is far superior now compared to back then, while Pistol Pete could handle the ball as good as anybody does today, ball handling overall is far superior too in this era. The game is faster, the players are more athletic.. It's all true. But, they were incredible for the time frame they played in, and that is how they should be judged. In return for that courtesy, the old players from yesteryear need to stop saying how today's players wouldn't have survived in their era.. They would have thrived.
Today's players don't even have the fundamental skills of the old school! I'm tired of hearing about today's shooters it's boring to SEE! The old era would strive on today's jump shooters they would collect a lot of rebounds and run all over today's players. You see LeBron turnover after turnover on the fastbreak! And they say he the best talk about the media in over hyping today's players. I much rather see 80s nba or today's wnba that's the truth! Do your research
+Lorenzo Pablo Samaniego I've done my research. players back then weren't locking themselves in a gym for 5 hours to get insane handles and 3 point range. a 3 point shooter was a novelty in the 80's, a specialist. Now if you play a skill slot and can't shoot that 3, you are suspect. The players from the 80's wouldn't understand how to defend a player who can nail 3's, nail mid range, and take it to the basket. the game was more fun back in the day because teams and players hated each other. Today it's like a gentleman's club where nobody wants to cross that line. skill wise, players from them would get demolished. do your research. I watched all the ball in the 80's.
+Johnny 34 You wrong on that yea the are in the gym working out but that does not matter today's players are so diluted and spoiled!!! You seem to forget the old schoolers would run a lot more than today's players. There was no flopping back in the day! It was way more physical and a lot more serious. You just don't know because the media is real different today compared to the past. You tend to forget how athletic the were in the days of old. Ain't nothing but spoiled brats in today's leage
Two Pro KEDS staff members. Knew both and traveled with both doing summer clinics. Both very great friends. Took Mac to 1249 restaurant in Waterbury where he took pictures with Moe. Also took Mac to Fortins Restaurant in Naugatuck CT where he took pictures with Clarence Fortin and son Mickey Fortin.
Check out "crazy shots Pete Maravich" on youtube and you will see what Pete could really do in Horse. You are wrong if you think Maravich isn't better than any Player today in terms of Passing and dribbling. In the limited videos available you will see Maravich throw passes that today's players still can't throw. and if one watches his college highlight films or ultimate highlights, Pete was as fast as anyone with the ball that I've ever seen. In the book Maravich. James Brown, the sportscaster, relates how he tried out for the Atlanta Hawks when Pete was there. Brown said that they would do suicide drills the full length of the court while dribbling a ball.and states that Pete would dribble two balls while doing the drill and still beat almost everyone.
Marovich was a flashy passer, but he wasn't a good passer. He was an absolute turnover machine. I can name 20 passers off the top of my head that I would take before Pete. As for his handles, I would agree that he's one of the GOAT. Allen Iverson is the only player that I might put ahead of him, but Curry and Irving aren't far behind.
McAdoo was a baller (3 straight scoring titles, an MVP, led the league in FG pct once, and in free throws once as well.) But getting up H-O on Maravich in Horse may be a bigger achievement.
By the way ,horse and basketball are 2 different things. Just like some guy can't make the all-star team but can win the slam dunk or 3 point shooting contest.
Fun watch of 2 classy guys just having fun. Man Maravich would be the last guy you would want in this type of game with all his moves! It was a different time-game and attitude.

Vince Cartwheel ikr wasn’t even in mid air
Pete: Dribble with my left hand twice, jump up, pass the ball under my right leg and then behind my back, bounce it off the top of the head, bank it off the backboard.
Mcadoo: Say what???
-- later --
Mcadoo: Free throw
Pete: Huh????
smh at these disrespectful kids in the comments
Pablo Kidd lol
grow up and get real kidd-o
look here Turd Ferguson I was obviously talking about kidd
Omg ur not even fun to talk to. Ur a turd
LOL I understand, but this stuff was cool if you were a kid in the 70s. You have to realize there wasn't cable TV and you were lucky to see a national game once a week. I think this is what CBS had during halftime on some of the games.
Two of my all time favorites, and both scoring champions!
These friendly H-O-R-S-E competitions back in the day made basketball fun to watch for their fans. TNT Studios with Shaq and company can probably do this today if they wanted to. I admired Pistol Pete and Bob McAdoo. Great basketball legends!
To see Pistol’s insane layup skip to 3:00 and to see it in slow motion skip to 3:17
I had to stop and laugh at how some of these shots were made because of how talented Pete was. Rest In Peace, Pistol.
This is the genesis of all that the modern game is built upon.
Horse was created for and by Pistol Pete.
Growing up as a teen n the mid 70’s I truly have seen some great players n my time
Thought Maravich was taking advantage until his last shot. He finished with a jumper and not one of his tricks that only he could do. That was classy and fair.
Would have been an epic battle had Pistol Pete taken on Larry Legend..
Make sure they're both in their prime, with some kind of time machine. It's a coin toss as to who would win.
Anybody watching in 2019??
No I'm watching in 1812.
2 great players and class acts. Miss these times
Pistol was college basketball's first ever "point a minute" player; scoring more points than minutes played while at LSU. His legendary shootout vs Dan Issell of Kentucky on national TV was incredible.
Pistol will always be my favorite player next to MJ. I was honored to go to Pistol Petes basketball camp in Clearwater FL where his son was a coach.
pistol pete was SOOOOO ahead oh his time, I already knew that but watching this video just made it even more clear🤷🏼♂️
He still would lose to people such as Scottie pippen, lebron James, Kobe Bryant, giannis antetokounmpo, dirk nowitzki, and probably prime Kareem and Wilt Chamberlain
Maravich: “right step, dribble, brush your teeth, reverse lay up, off the bank.”
He could’ve played for the likes of UCLA if he’d told his Dad “no”
My Grandfather was good friends with Press Maravich in Fairmont ,W.va.
I won $100 on the Pistol that night … but I'm still waiting for the payoff!
@Memermandan Same question I ask myself 😂😂😂😂😂
This is honestly amazing, pistol had behind the back between the legs lays and filayyyys 30-40 years ago 😱😱 crazy man
This was somewhat painful to watch but hey it was the 70’s
You cant do that now tho?
@@drax141 I can't do it now. Legs don't look good enough for those shorts.
lol why was it painful
Why because it's not some thug shooting the ball?
Theres actually a decent chance these are the 2 most underated players in NBA histroy"
^^^^^^^
They weren't really in their day. But lately, yeah, they sure do get overlooked. Each had their prime's cut short prematurely.
No one was better than alcindor in college,
@Jlm alcindor is considered the greatest college player alltime,
@Jlm that was wilt chamberlain ☝️😊
@Jlm Can you imagine what he would have done if they had the 3 point line when he was playing.
You know Pete made all these shots zillions of times. This was awesome!
Valiant effort by Bob.
One does not simply beat Pistol Pete in horse.
Still better quality than the Quarantine tourny.
Pete is the best around nothing will keep him down not even age
well he is dead....
+Jason Burton He had a congenital heart defect which he couldn't have known about.
How about death?????
No way Pete loses a game of H-O-R-S-E
He won
If he was in his prime he would lose to harden
Craig H we would lose to a lot of current players, and probably a lot of people outside the league too
Nothing better than the classics
I don't even like basketball, but Maravich was a monster. Amazing. RIP.
Pistol Pete was such an ace on the court. Not as tall as other stars. Still played such a fine game.
we need more shit like this on all star weekend... even former legends going one on one, like kobe vs jordan, reggie vs kenny, shaq vs chuck... what about 1 on 1 playoffs, with lebron, jordan, kobe, durant, kawhi... better than the 'talent challenge' crap they have now
And that proves--what? That's apples vs banana's!
Man I love these old clips...
Wonder what his scoring stats would've been with a 3 point line?
rubbersole79 They earned 3 pointers the old fashioned way...took a foul while driving to the hoop.
I know that his 68-point game would’ve been 74. In college, yes, he would’ve averaged over 50 a game.
A record for the ages--like Wilt's 100 pt game--never been beaten! Pete was the GOAT outside shooter!
that is one person in NBA history you would not want to play HORSE with.
+Johnny 34 It sounds like you don't play basketball at a high level. Forgive me but you are to naive with today's media
First off Pistol just playing horse! Have you ever seen pistol play or train.
As a kid we played horse i tried all these skills.Great videos
Not fair,Pistol was phenomenal.
And he could shoot from way way out as well as anyone who ever played could.
Check out his old balhandling vids on TH-cam... this dude had real game.
Did his ''quick draw'' drill the first time I tried..gotta have a quick brain and hands.
Michael Sanders he could score better
Thanks for posting this
Pete is the last guy you wanna play against when it comes to horse
I'd actually pay to play against him. I'd probably lose every time but maybe it would be close.
McAdoo was a baller (3 straight scoring titles, an MVP, led the league in FG pct once, and in free throws once as well.) But getting up H-O on Maravich in Horse may be a bigger achievement.
now athleticism 100 times what is use to be just 50 years passed. I could not even imaging what it could be in 200 the way it goes now.
Wrong dude , freaks back then were Normal !
“Two area codes away”
Steph and Dame be like “psh, man, he ain’t even left the neighborhood yet!”
3:58 '''CHOKE'' lmao
Who won?
I only said what somebody else said...
It was a joke, they are not meant to take seriously.
He is quoting Maravich. Maravich uttered, Choke, after he missed his shot.
two of the my all-time favorites!
By the way ,horse and basketball are 2 different things. Just like some guy can't make the all-star team but can win the slam dunk or 3 point shooting contest.
Dr J called Pistol Pete the most skilled basketball player that he's ever seen.
My favorite players growing up! ALL the skills big daddy
Who finally won the overall horse tournament that year?
Paul Westphal. Pete was supposed to go up against him but was injured and replace by Rick Barry. Westphal finished with H-O.
Too bad Pete got injured as I can't think of any player in NBA history who had better skills suited for a game of horse than Maravich.
I agree. This competition was held in 1978.
i respect these guys as 2 of the all time greats but this looks like me and my dad playing horse in the driveway
1:40 thats some trricky shity
McAdoo around 6-9/6-10 ... Maravich looks 6-7! Pistol the first really big NBA guard.
thats cool because he wasnt. He was 6 foot 5. And he wasnt really big, he was just slender
Osama Bin Laden Height is height and has nothing to do with his weight. Pistol was at least 6-6. Now go away ... "bin laden!"
Gumball LastRally Show me the evidence that he is 6 foot 6
Osama Bin Laden You're an idiot! Try and get a life!
Gumball LastRally Lmfao why the fuck are you so mad? All I asked for was evidence that hes 6 foot 6 as you claim.
Fun watch of 2 classy guys just having fun. Man Maravich would be the last guy you would want in this type of game with all his moves! It was a different time-game and attitude.
