Reinecke is a scandalously underrated composer. The only work which is still known and sometimes played to-day is his sonata Undine for flute and piano. He wrote more than 200 opus, including chamber music, symphonies, concertos. His art is traditional, but always personal and full of ideas. His constructions are very firm, his writing for the instrument and his art of orchestration excellent. The present concerto gives its full role to the soloist, but does bot forget the role of the orchestra and of the exchanges between the two entities. It is full of lyrism. It is indeed a great concerto for violin in the pure romantic style. It is a pity that nobody plays it anymore.

The flute concerto of him(op.283) is also played nowadays. It is also an excellent piece which I feel it is like a shower of sun in winter.

I forgot to note a detail. This concerto is in G minor; Reineke seems to have particularly loved the minor mode. Most of his masterworks, including his sonata for flute an piano Undine, are in minor mode.

Reinecke was successful with the genre of concerto. His 4 piano concertos are masterworks, especially the 4th. Here, we have a delicate violin conceerto, which takes advantage of the skills of Reinecke in terms of melody, architecture and orchestration. Indeed a nice work, which would deserve to be more often executed in our music halls.
NOTE- He also wrote nice concertos for flute and for harp, which is noticeable for a romantic composer.

Gérard Begni I 100 % agree with you regarding Reinecke's mastering of the concerto genre. Apart from the excellent concertos you've mentioned, he also wrote some brilliant shorter concertante pieces, like the Ballade op.288 (flute and orchestra) and Konzertstuck op.33 (piano and orchestra).

The Cello Concerto of 1882 is pretty good as well!

Why is this piece performed a lot less (almost not at all) than Wieniawski's, Brahms' or Beethoven's violin concerto? Completely deserving joyful attention, the Lento is really an outstanding masterpiece, but the rest is also up there with any of the very best.

The solo of violin from 13:40 sounds a bit like the 5th movement of the partita for violin n°2 BWV 1004 of Bach.

Did you sing the role of the evil wizard Dilfeng in Friedrich Kuhlau's opera Lulu? Are you Henning von Schulman?

I love Reinecke's music, my sister too, but not my dad never mind. As far as we know Siward the Strong from Northumbria actually died sitting in his privy, he apparently didn't have time to tie off his boots, cholera has taken the best of him. What does the concerto has to do with the painting I don't really know.
