    You can admire something someone has done without thinking that they're an overall wonderful person. I'm also thinking that if someone has to be perfect in order to be looked up to, no one ever would be, since there isn't a person on earth who hasn't ever done anything wrong. I guess it's just up to each person to decide "how much wrong", or to what degree you can accept as just being a flawed human before it hits your threshold of "nope, no thanks". I don't think there is a black and white answer, unfortunately.

    • @frogggirl2
      @frogggirl2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      On that tangent I don't think you can judge someone raised in slavery hundreds of years ago and expect them to be a perfect person by our today's metric. Can't imagine the level of trauma that Fredrick Douglas would've needed to overcome, just for starters.

    Keep the cat and call animal control. Even if they can't do anything about it, maybe you can get them put on some sort of no adopt list. They shouldn't have animals if that's what they're going to do

    It was incredibly fascinating to hear what you said with regards to Angela Davis book and separating author/person from their work (which was not about Davis, just to be clear!). I, too, often feel you cannot separate the two with good conscience, and it does make it harder to 'look up' to others. I think that is a very good conversation to have!

    The concept of "looking up" to someone is pretty foreign to me. Like, there's value in almost every person on Earth and there is zero reason to not acknowledge the importance of their work. Fanatical adoration is just as dumb as blind mass cancellations, it's one-dimensional and inherently not useful whatsoever. Crimes should be punished in the court of law, but opinions aren't crimes; sure, I can personally have as many dealbreakers as I need according to my own moral compass but I can't expect everyone else to fall in line. I can't police what people do or think, I can express my views freely and be ready for any opinion that's in direct opposition to mine. There are no unproblematic humans, especially male ones; quality media (the ones that deal with interesting issues, anyway) are too complicated to categorize in black or white, so every adult is in charge of their own sympathies and consumption and is supposed to figure out where the line of like-dislike is for them personally.

    In regards to your tangent about Frederic Douglas and good people doing bad things, that is black-and-white thinking. Not every "good" person is 100% good all the time. They can do or say bad things and hurt others, and still be good. Just as not all "bad" people are 100% bad all the time. People are complex creatures, and it's a shame to reduce them to either good or bad. I understand you being disappointed when someone you look up to makes a mistake, but that's normal and acceptable.

    I’m more conscious of trying to understand the context of the time period and societal norms when it’s something that happened very far in the past. I’m not familiar with him, but I wouldn’t begrudge a slave for not have time to teach somebody else to read. Even after he was freed, He wasn’t formally taught so I’d imagine it would be very difficult for him to teach somebody else. Or how can we expect somebody who lived decades ago to be conscious of women’s rights when he himself was uneducated and opressed.

    It is always disheartening to find out that someone one admires has done/said something one disagrees with.
    But I think we have to remember that we are all human. And we are a sum of our parts.
    And that we have ALL done good things. And we have ALL done bad things.
    Even me.
    Even you.
    So, in your example, the fact that Douglass didn't teach his wife to read is discouraging; it would serve us well to not take that one fact and discount the tremendous good he did in his life.

    I try not to let every mistake or stupid thing someone does to make me start disliking them, but I've definitely put quite a few authors on no buy list because of what they did. It's a mix of crimes (Eddings and Zimmer Bradley) and non-crimes (Rowling, Dessen), and I'm probably hipocritical in who I "punish" but oh well.
    The latest Oscar controversy also opened my eyes a lot about certain people in the industry. Let me just say it's interesting a lot of white actresses started caring about indie projects getting recognition in the year when it was possible that nominees in best actress category would've been less white than usual.

    I don't tend to agree with all being either black or white, as I think it can have overall negative effects. If one person has a belief or said something negative in one area, it doesn't erase all the good they did and continue to do in other areas. Think of all those good things disappearing because x person is being so called "cancelled", in my opinion it would mean a lot more harm. Of course everyone will act upon it however they seem fit, as we all have the right to. But I don't think you can have such distinct lines. Another thing is even what is considered right or even the concept of freedom can change in time.

    I think, as we grow, we become more aware (hopefully) of people's sufferings, and what actually matters. So, what some might call "nitpicking" is actually stating facts, and by consequence, recognising the injustices that are still on-going. That's mainly due to the fact that the longer we live, the more we see, the more we ourselves experience. Someone has to call out all the BS.

    Hey Emily, about what you said about idolizing people and then turning out not so good. I have come to the conclusion that everyone has a shitty side and all evil stems from weakness. Weakness to fight some animalistic insticts etc. Thats why i see bad people as weak and i can somewhat feel pity for them. As i get older i've found i never idolize people, i can get impressed about what people can do, write, sing etc without appreciating the people themselves because everyone will let you down in some aspect of their lives. Thats also part why i separate art from artist, you can have the shittiest person write some of the most beautiful music ever and i can be in awe how a human brain did that but i hate the person if that makes sense. Also, i believe that even from the most horrible person there are things to make ourselves grow and learn. Thats why i am not the biggest fan of cancelling people ( i agree not giving them your platform for sure)
    Ps ive found reading with black background and white letters put a huge strain on my eyes and i get headaches

  • @kristinanne6534

    I completely understand what you mean by not liking someone once you realize something bad about them. After years of therapy (and many years in general because I'm 46), I've come to the conclusion that all human beings are fallable and also products of their time. The imperfections of people from long ago are so obvious to us because we live in a totally different society. It's what makes us human.
    I had a lot of terrible abuse as a child and it's been hard for me in therapy to reconcile the good aspects of my parents. I've come to realize that people aren't all good or all bad. Even evil and terrible people can have some good in them. For example, I'm sure Hitler had some good qualities. I've found it even harder to forgive myself for the bad aspects of myself because I consider myself a good person. But, no one is perfect and we can't expect ourselves to be. I really try to judge myself and everyone else by the totality of their lives. It's been a really difficult transition for me, but it's allowed me to learn so many new ideas.
    Sorry to philosophize....

    • @cruelaz
      @cruelaz ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes could have just left that part out with Hitler. I don't care if Hitler had some good qualities the damage he has done outweights everything. Lets not trying to humanize people like him. Also as a german who would have been also deported at that time for being queer and neurodivergent reading something like that is upsetting.
      Also I highly urge you to educate yourself on using "products of their time" as an excuse of any sort of behavior or person.
      You can find quite a few articles and essays online about this.
      Brown University Revanna D Navarro: "But He was a Product of His Time":
      "People from all walks of life frequently use this phrase in the defense of historical figures and artistic productions. The phrase rests on the premise that it is unethical to apply what is determined to be contemporary social norms or values onto past actions and ideas. This assertion is wrong. The phrase, in application, is a universal justification for hatred and violence under the guise of outdated social norms. What is more insidious, however, is how the phrase is used as a scapegoat for real historical analysis. The application of this sentiment by those in academia and in everyday conversation is reflective of many tools used to devalue the experiences and histories of marginalized groups. ..."

    • @kristinanne6534
      @kristinanne6534 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cruelaz That's why I said you look at the totality of their life. I literally picked the the worst person in history I could think of to prove the point that everyone has some good in them no matter how small. I'm not saying she should read Hitler's writing to learn anything good And saying people are a product of their time is not excusing bad behavior. It's just a truth of history. In 100 years, I'm sure things are that normal to us will be villainized as we evolve as a species. I just don't think you have to throw away the greatness of certain individuals and their ideas because of one bad action. You obviously shouldn't accept a life full of terrible behavior by saying that it's a product of the time. That's just my opinion. Ymmv
      I wanted to add as an edit that I really understand where you're coming from and you make good points. I'm sorry if I wasn't as clear as I could have been in my original post. I'm not dismissing what you said. I'm just trying to clarify that I meant something different. I'm sorry for the confusion.

    "I have adult things to do." Every time someone says that I always imagine that person is wearing a top hat and drinking fancy alcoholic beverages. (In contrast, when someone says they are "adulting", I imagine them doing chores or going to work and paying bills.) But I'm also an elder Millennial, so maybe younger adults have different usages of the slang.

    I'm 100% with you, I also can't separate the person and their work. But I think that's a good thing. History has had many bad moments where people were not held accountable for their bad actions because they also did good. I think we can absolutely appreciate someone for the good they did while remaining critical of the bad (just like we should be when we self-reflect). Maybe that's even the most healthy and productive way forward.

    RE Not separating art and artists: I am the same way. Besides just not wanting to financially support people that have despicable views, I also now view all the art under the lens of what they've done or said and I literally cannot stop thinking about it.

    I think one of the most important things about growing up and understanding the world is coming to terms with the fact that there’s no such thing as “good” or “bad” people. Everyone is complicated and hypocritical and contradictory and wrong at least sometimes. I think it’s unrealistic, and sometimes dangerous, to expect total perfection from someone, even if that is synchronicity between their politics and their personal lives. It has to be possible to hold the good and bad actions of people together, perhaps even weighing them against each other, to determine what you admire about someone rather than holding them up in their entirety like an idol. Just my thoughts!

    I'm not much into the SFF genre, but because of your recommendations, I eased into it. I read the Poppy War Series, To Be Taught If Fortunate, and The Priory of the Orange Tree. I thoroughly enjoyed these books and I also preordered A Day of Fallen Night. Waiting for its release on Feb 28! Looking forward to the books you're reading this year.
    Also just wondering since you're reading Non-Fiction lately, have you read Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson?

    Another great, eclectic video.
    Of course people are flawed and our societies are flawed which is why it's so important to learn about how we've progressed. Sometimes people are bad. Sometimes good people do bad things. Sometimes it's the environment, and sometimes it's the individual. I find it amazing how, looking back, allowed/accepted/"normal" actions were just clearly messed up. Slavery in all it's forms was one of humanities worst, unfortunately, it's been a worldwide occurrence. I recently read Out of Darkness which is a historical novel about a school explosion that happened in 1937. It's really about racism, the school explosion is just background. It's pretty heartbreaking, and I found it that much more difficult because it took place where I grew up. Sadly, even in the 80's and early 90's I witnessed some of the same attitudes.
    Something that has always bothered me here in the U.S. is that the time between the abolishment of slavery and when black men won the right to vote was 5 years (abolishment of slavery, 1865 -15th Amendment 1870) yet women didn't win the right to vote for another 50 years (19th Amendment, 1920).
    (Coincidentally, the add that popped up midway through your video was for Hogwarts Legacy.)

    People are so weird about their casual animal negligence. So many people seem to get pets just to lock them outside, sometimes in a cage, just to feed them, get some positive attention from the pet, and watch them live shortened lives. And because that's how animals were treated when they grew up, it's totally fine! They suddenly act like they live in the country in the 19th century.

    Love the vlog! Two things: have you seen Fire of Love documentary on Disney about those two volcanologists?? Amazing footage, and they speak French throughout, effectively a bilingual film. Thing two, totally with you on having trouble actually liking historical figures when they stood up against racism but not for women's rights, or vice versa. The only non-problematic advocates across the board were Women of Colour who were advocating for both!

    yeah, John Adams sent letters all the time to his wife and they talked through ideas and she said that women should get the right to vote and even though he saw her as someone to talk ideas with didn't push to give women the right to vote. I find it somewhat easier to enjoy things still if I liked it before finding out the bad things about the creator. like Ender's game I still love but will never continue the series similarly with Harry Potter.

    My sister has a very similar cat to the one that is visiting you. Well, hers is ginger, but he has very long hair and looks big, his tail is super long and fluffly but his body is so tiny and he chirps. He was separated from his mother at a very young age (born outside in his case), so he also drolls when he cuddles like he wants milk. I'm sad for your visitor, some people don't seem to understand what a pet needs...
