Anyone who has performed on stage knows that you feed off of the energy of the audience. In rehearsals you basically are marking time, going through the motions. The excitement of the audience is electrifying every single time you step onto that stage. It’s why we do what we do. It’s truly addicting, more than any drug imaginable.
I always said this. I’m Britney’s age (our birthdays are less than a month apart) but I was part of a friends group that was into “alternative” music back in the day, so liking and enjoying Britney wasn’t an option. I have a lot of conflicting feelings about her, but I remember saying basically this to my friends back then. Yeah, she wasn’t the greatest singer, and she didn’t write her own songs, but as a Performer, an Entertainer, she is incredible. And why should that be valued as a talent any less than vocal performance or writing skills?
I think the key difference between the rehearsals and the live performance is her energy, which was already high to begin with, but she really gave her EVERYTHING in the actual performance. I do wish there were fewer camera moves in the final performance bc there were some really cool and intricate moves we didn't get to see, like a bunch of things did inside that prop, and that lil knee kick toward the end:/
Well I disagree..she had higher energy on rehearsals.don't get me wrong of course she was amazing on the actual show but she had more confidence on rehearsals..britney always had a little anxiety on stage when she's live to perform in a huge crowd...she is more relax on rehearsals..but she was amazing on both moments

True! A very important performance in her career. And you can tell she knew about the importance and made it into a pure attraction! The VMA from 1999 was her debut as a global superstar, but this beige, diamond masterpiece catapulted her into a pop icon as you said. I still remember vividly when the performance was a couple of days old and I watched it over and over and over again. Even then I knew that I was a witness to something very precious.

This performance was priceless. This is when I literally fell in love with Britney, had like a big crush on her like every other guy did. I just noticed in the practice rehearsal she clapped his hand, and in the live performance she missed his hand clap. The only other thing from the rehearsal vs the live is she had a problem getting off that suit shirt, but she did so good. You would’ve never known.
I remember watching this.. just a few months older than she… in my college apartment. I was floored.. it still to this day is my MOST favorite live performance.. she was incredible!
What you see here is already, AT EIGHTEEN, what a rock-solid professional she was. In rehearsal,, she pretty much has all her choreography nailed. Her performance looks spontaneous and eoritc, but she has all her steps, shakes, hair tosses - everything in place for the "live" performance. A genuine star.

The lighting team is super underrated here- managing to keep all the backups in darkness even with 50 lights pointing everywhere and ensuring Britney is practically glowing on stage even during the dark sections of the routine.
What i notice most is when she dances she has a significant flow and ease that other dancers with probably more professional training do not. Others seem very boxy, hers is fluid and yet dead on time with the beat of music...and yet other times, she is slightly off only to make it part of the natural movement. Its amazing, i think she feels the music rather than technique alone like the backup dancers.
I agree. I recall there was a dance class video of Slave from Yanis Marshall (sp?) where, despite all the dancers trying to outdo each other on the floor, they never came close to the ease of Britney’s moves. You nail it right in the head: the flow and ease were unmatched.
The camera ppl missed so many great moments I mean this is freaking amazing but like there was a moment where the music paused and she had her head tilt back in the apparatus and then everyone including the dancers looked towards the audience.. a closeup shot would have sealed it … I love her so much

Britney’s vocals are decent, not great but better than the average singer. Her dancing though… she clearly feels every move. She is enchanting to watch.
Tbh it is really good considering how difficult it must be to make your voice so High and creaky when it’s naturally deep AND doing intricate dancing the entire time.

I actually felt that the clothing changed the overall vibe. Watching her in black and having the comfort seemed to convey more control and power- which fits the top. The nude, glitter and camera shots made it feel more sexualized. It makes me sad for her that this is how the industry saw her.

Both the rehearsal and performance are awesome but the rehearsal is so much better because it seems like she hit every move correctly and harder in the rehearsal video. I watched the video twice and she missed a few moves that she did in the rehearsal in the actual performance. The was performance was still awesome and will forever go down in VMA history as one of the very best VMA performances ever

I've seen her live back then and the fact she went almost 2 hours performing like that... Singing and dancing with no real break was amazing. Even dancing for 30 minutes back then i needed a rest and water break

The lighting team is super underrated here- managing to keep all the backups in darkness even with 50 lights pointing everywhere and ensuring Britney is practically glowing on stage even during the dark sections of the routine.
What i notice most is when she dances she has a significant flow and ease that other dancers with probably more professional training do not. Others seem very boxy, hers is fluid and yet dead on time with the beat of music...and yet other times, she is slightly off only to make it part of the natural movement. Its amazing, i think she feels the music rather than technique alone like the backup dancers.
I agree. I recall there was a dance class video of Slave from Yanis Marshall (sp?) where, despite all the dancers trying to outdo each other on the floor, they never came close to the ease of Britney’s moves. You nail it right in the head: the flow and ease were unmatched.

The camera ppl missed so many great moments I mean this is freaking amazing but like there was a moment where the music paused and she had her head tilt back in the apparatus and then everyone including the dancers looked towards the audience.. a closeup shot would have sealed it … I love her so much

I actually felt that the clothing changed the overall vibe. Watching her in black and having the comfort seemed to convey more control and power- which fits the top. The nude, glitter and camera shots made it feel more sexualized. It makes me sad for her that this is how the industry saw her.

Both the rehearsal and performance are awesome but the rehearsal is so much better because it seems like she hit every move correctly and harder in the rehearsal video. I watched the video twice and she missed a few moves that she did in the rehearsal in the actual performance.
