There is no way that a person can have 300 houseplants for “aesthetics.” Houseplants take time and energy. Houseplants take work. Even if people start purchasing plants because of Instagram, if they’ve managed to keep them a live and thriving there must be some love there. I see nothing wrong with that.

Danyal Howard I agree. I get annoyed when I see a plant hoarder making videos of sad dying plants that they forgot to water because they have over 1000 plants. I have around 70 plants and that’s my maximum, if I get an additional plant, I give are sell one, this way I keep my collection manageable and healthy

Nick Pileggi you’re kidding! That’s so messed up. Your clip is a big reason I was so disappointed in their video. You have sooo much great plant content on your channel & they chose to use that one single clip you have talking about social media & plants. It just proves to me that they were trying to sway viewers to think we do it for attention. I’m sorry that happened to you.

Another fluff piece from The New Yorker. Ok, some millennials like having plants in their homes. Guess what, so do some older people (I'm approaching 60). It's not a new trend. My Grandmother was in the WWI & WWII generation and had tons of plants. Adding in social media is new, but it's like that for any hobby (not just plant lovers). They could have approached it a lot differently without making it seem like millennial plant lovers are strange. For instance, today we have so much more information about plant care available at the touch of our fingertips. That fact helps us keep plants much better then we were able to, back in say the 1970's. The video is just going after clicks/views by trying to make something out of not much of anything.

I really appreciate your take on this from your generation! I'm young, but I don't know anybody that has more than maybe a few plants, of any age group. I couldn't tell if it was an age thing, or maybe regional.
Probably regional, I live in zone 2 🤷‍♀️

I understand what you are saying. But my understanding of why The New Yorker made this video is because the younger generation is reviving the house plant industry. I don't believe they made it to say 'older people do not like plants'. I think it was just to show the rising interest in plants by younger people.

I’ve watched the New Yorker vid when it came out. I am almost 60 years old and I will give you my take on it. I am so happy to see more young people excited about house plants. Nice house plants require nurturing to grow and be healthy, abet maybe for social media. They care for and nurture; meeting the needs of a living thing and then to see their excitement with new growth! It’s awesome! This world can never have too many plants! ☘️🌿🌱🍀🌵🎋

I do it for therapy. My kids moved away, waaay far away, and I'm feeling empty nest pain. Plants give me something to nurture and care for. So I really don't fit their mold. I agree with you Harli.

I didn’t watch their video because of the reasons you mentioned. My mother has always had our house looking like a jungle! Now that I’m an adult it would feel weird not to be surrounded by them. As far as people picking on Millennials, by calling how they feature house plant videos some kind of trend for social media attention, don't they realize these young people could be trying to get attention in so many other ways that could be negative or harmful??? I see plenty of Boomers jumping on the bandwagon enjoying raising plants and sharing their experiences too! C'mon everybody, there's always gonna be trends.....hurray! They're fun! I'm 27 and don't know anyone my age who enjoys plants so channels like this make me so happy. I started off with house plants and have recently starting moving on to outdoor container gardening (as I dont have a proper garden). I love having something to take care of and to be able to watch something grow that I planted all on my own is really fulfilling. This last week has been awful for me having found out that a very close family member has cancer. The peaceful garden centre has become my sanctuary. I have found gardening so therapeutic as it allows me to be outside and keep myself busy taking my mind off all of the upset. I think people my age who look at plants and gardening as something boring and meant for older people are really missing a trick! It's honestly been a saviour for me recently.

I am a millennial and I got into plants because I ultimately would like to become a beekeeper one day and because I couldn’t do that right away I decided to help the bees in other ways by improving their environment and giving them food and water through gardening. It started with one basil plant, then propagating it, then I branched out to edibles, now it’s full blown with plants outside and inside of my house. Although I have social media, it came long after my plant obsession and I simply love to share it and bring others joy. Not to mention it’s the fastest way we can learn from one another, I’ve learned everything I know about gardening/plants from people I found on social media. Love your videos and Summer’s too!!!!

Before it was Instagram, it was online forums. And before that, gatherings at local nurseries. It's interesting everything gets framed in time as if it hasn't always been a part of life. It just wasn't in everyone's awareness like it can be now with the internet.

A few weeks ago I saw an article in a newspaper about this subject. Some of the comments were negative, and maybe ignorant about the supposed reasons young people have gotten interested in house plants. Personal observations: I have thought about this thing, and social media aside, I don't go there, I am grateful for this interest. And very grateful for the plant community on TH-cam, I learn so much. This interest in plants has caused the plant industry to explode, and make more plants and varieties available to those of us who have loved plants most of our lives. I can go to Walmart and find plants I never saw before. Shopping online for plants has become a big deal to me. I can have many beautiful plants that I never would have dreamed of before this. So thank you, I do not like the term Millenials, young people for making a big difference in the plant market for all of us.

I actually started looking for plants that my nana and mom grew when I was a child for nostalgic reasons(hoyas, Christmas cactus, African violets, lipstick plants etc) and then branched our to other types that I think are interesting. It’s fun, relaxing and gives me a sense of accomplishment when I can grow, propagate or revive plants. It’s nurturing :)

This is the first time I've been able to keep plants healthy and alive and it has given me so much more joy than I thought it could! I am at 28 plants so far, and I really think I can't help myself from getting 200 more. Honestly, scrolling through social media and seeing plants and people loving and taking care of something that's beautiful and living is so much more of a mentally healthy way for me to spend time on Instagram and TH-cam than when I was obsessed with makeup or whatever. If people are doing it for attention, that's whatever. I am so grateful for you and people like Summer Rayne and every other plant lover. Every time I go to therapy on a bad day and I'm asked what I'm doing that's healthy for me and keeping me going l, I always say "well... My son used to think I was nuts. Now he’s 12 and is so into it. I have probably 150+ plants inside alone. He loves to come around with me when I water or do my daily checks to see the new growth and when potting. I’m hoping he will continue to enjoy as he gets older. Plus I love the bonding time with my children as I pass this on to them. I’m 36 and have been a plant addict my whole life.

I have always had plants and I get inspiration and ideas from plant people. I am a biology teacher so I know my way around botany. Why do people have problems with a hobby that just brings endless joy. Can we just say that plants make people of any age happy? Do we have to always analyze everything to death?

I'm on social media as an artist, but don't post my plants outside of occasional Instagram stories. I got into them *because* I came across Jenna's plant tour accidentally, at a time I really needed to focus on self care. I had always done patio gardening, but it was really frustrating because the direct summer sun would kill anything and everything in pots unless I could water them twice a day, year after year. I had never considered house plants before for some reason, thinking maybe they'd be harder to care for, but totally adore them now. They're for me alone to enjoy, but I learn so much from videos here, so I'm grateful for that.

I had house plants in my room when I was a little girl in the 70's. Then as a parent of young children I was addicted to outdoor garden of flower beds (fairy gardens, water ponds). It was a way to keep my an eye on my children and I was addicted to watching the gardens grow. Then a couple years ago I started back collecting house plants. I am 53 and LOVE house plants, they make me happy and relax. Now my children are in their 20's, and my daughter and I bond over our plant obsession. I think it is a healthy addiction :)

My grandmother and mother both lived on the Rez and both always had houseplants, indoor crops and green thumbs. I picked up my green thumb from them. My grandfather is Filipino and was really into Bonsai, both are passions and problems. Love bonsai and plants, but damn. You run out of room quickly!
It’s an amazing process and teaches you a lot of patience, plus it makes the hone feel magical IMO. I am a truck driver and avid outdoorsman, fishing guide, I am a 33 year old millennial, and I love plants. Most would never guess, but I really love watching them grow. I am trying to pass this to my 3 children too. It can teach you so much!

Hey Harli! I really think it's all relative. I just turned 40 and I am considered a 'Gen X'. We didn't grow up with social media, we had no way to reach out and connect like we do now. The millenial generation has MUCH more exposure and experience with technology and social media, so it stands to reason that you see it more frequently from this group.
I can tell you there are so many of us 'older' crowd who are getting on board and who would probably love to do something like TH-cam, but aren't as exposed and comfortable with the technology.
You just keep doing you lady!! We're all lovin' it! And if people think we're crazy... That's ok too... People don't like what they don't understand. Xoxo

One more comment haha but honestly caring for my plants makes me feel similar to caring for my dogs. Like after i go on a hike with my dog i feel this rlly warm happiness because i feel like i treated my dog well and it’s just a good nurturing feeling and personally i love LOVE nurturing like everything and everyone i love caring for pets, family members, babysitting(AND dog sitting lol), and of course plants!!! When i see that I’ve taken good care of my plants i get that feeling, i can’t help but smile when i see that i helped grow that plant that might’ve been doing bad or whatever. Idk that’s just what i think :)

The thing is that with social media and Millennials, like ourselves, is a double-edged sword. Through social media, we are able to spread more information, understand stuff better through that. There will always those who do things because of social media attention. Hopefully, they realise that they have fallen in love with what they are gain attention through and start loving them for what they are truly. I have always grown up with plants living in sunny Singapore, garden city. My mum loves her orchids and balcony garden, that taught me to love plants. I have a 20 and growing collection of indoor plants now. And you guys have really helped me care for my plants so much better! Continue doing what you are doing Harli! Peace out!

Thanks, Harli. I saw your clip in that video and loved hearing your take on the matter. My "old" ass is still considered a millennial, but houseplants have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Haven't made a social media post (other than the occasional comment) in years. I have several that survived me somehow for 15 years or so. I'm here for ideas and pointers, and I'll take the giggles when I can! Great CONTENT. Thanks for the inspiration.

I was born in 1960 and have loved plants for a large part of my life, my generation just didnt have the social media to share our love of plants over the world. Millennial here, I had a few plants for a few years, and what got me started on my addiction was taking a biology class where we learned all the phyla. It was so interesting to me. The reward of seeing a happy, healthy plant makes spending maybe 30-45 min a day watering plants is what does it for me. I became interested in the social media community (that i didnt even know it existed) after I saw Jenna Marbles video about her house plants. They make my living space lively and calming!

Do you think you would still shop for, purchase and keep the houseplants you have if you were unable (alternate universe style) to post at all on any social media platform? Do you think social media influences which plants you feel you HAVE to have and some that you may not want BECAUSE they aren’t popular online? (These are just questions by the way... not based at all on assumptions about you as an individual)! The answers might make an interesting video! I’m considered a baby boomer (tail end of that generation anyway) and your videos were what got me interested in houseplants (thank you) so I’ve never actually thought of it as a “millennial thing”!

Interesting question about which plants people want basted on which ones go around on social media. I feel like everyone hates on weeping figs because they like to drop leaves but I love mine despite that fact and no one fawns over them. Same with schefflera and china dolls. Beatiful plants but no one talks about them. But I can't find a peperomia rosso or a philodendron micans anywhere locally because they are always snached up or ridiculously expensive online. :/

My mother loves plants as long as they live in the garden but i love indoor plants as well and i love having a community where i can share tips, excitement and even aesthetic pictures. There is nothing wrong in thinking that your plant looks pretty and taking an aesthetic picture of it. Who cares? People love pretty stuff, humans have always loved pretty things!
I do feel like many plants get trendy and then go back to oblivion very quickly thanks to social media but social media has also exposed me to some varieties that i would have never encountered inrl and they are stunning and interesting. I love learning about plant biology 😁

Millennial here- I stared with plants by propagating things I found in the wild. After some time I NEEDED more. I have an insta Account but I’m very picky about what I follow. I started using instagram to ID plants that I found in the wild by searching tags. Then I stared finding plant accounts to follow that were very informative. Once I started finding these accounts I heard “A Whole New World” play in my head because I was ole Ed up to all the possibilities of plants I could own and got insight on how to decorate with them and create vessels to hold them in. So yes social media influenced what I bought- but it was the best influence because I was already in the plant train looking to learn more.

I got into plants first and then looked for other like minded people on youtube. I don't have social media influence at all, and yet I have a bunch of succulents and other plants. Seeing them grow just inspires joy, it has nothing to do with social media. I recently harvested two pineapples from plants I grew. You can imagine how happy I was. I get excited every time I see new growth and my plants give back so much. I can see why people want to share that and in this age of tech and social media, they have an easier time doing it is all.

Honestly, I saw Jenna Marbles plant tour on TH-cam a few months ago and saw how genuinely HAPPY she was, it inspired me to get a houseplant myself. I was going through a time where I felt so sad and lost with my life but seeing my new plant grow (foxtail fern!) gave me such joy! This inspired me to read and research about other houseplants and I ended up getting more that I keep in my bedroom and kitchen. I have 7 plants now (and only killed one, RIP!) but throughout all the highs and lows of me trying to take care of my plants, at the end of the day, I am just so happy to look at them on my window sill and see them grow. It’s really helped me with my depression and other mental health issues too. So I guess I bought my first plant because of social media but I definitely fell in love with plants themselves and not just the aesthetic.

I just watched the video in question, and I thought it was great, but it's so not just millennials! I turn 50 this year, and have 3 millennial children, and I'm a new convert to the concept of the indoor jungle! 2 of my 3 kids think I'm nuts, the middle one is gradually starting his own collection. I've always been very active on social media myself and yes, I've just started an instagram account just for plant stuff, but that's just so I don't bore everyone on my other account! I don't post there for likes and follows, I just love sharing how beautiful plants are, and seeing everyone else's little green babies. I am also learning SO much about plant care from people who've been doing this for longer than I have.
I have started collecting, nurturing and loving plants simply because I love seeing them around me in my home. I've also had issues with severe anxiety over the years, and I find them so soothing and calming - both being surrounded by them and caring for them. Propagating is probably my favourite aspect of being a plant mama - maybe it's my maternal instinct, lol, but now that my human babies are all big, I can have new babies! So, my take on this is - there is no such thing as too many plants, no matter what age you are

Just watched this and found it to shed quite a positive light on plant 'collecting' and the reasons millennial's may be collecting them. There is no denying that social media is huge in the lives of our younger generations, I feel there is no cause for anyone to go on the defense because the New Yorker points it out. It can have negative and damaging impact in many ways, but the sharing of new plants and care-taking tips is one of the positives that can come from a social media platform. The reasons the video -- mostly Summer -- point out are legit. Calming effects, getting in touch with nature, healthy environment--also slowing down the faster pace of life and the stresses placed on millennials are all very real scenarios going on. As far as looking at plants from an aesthetic point of view-- why not? They are beautiful and enhance my home, I'm always watching different things on styling for my plants and THAT brings me great joy too. I have over a hundred plants and I don't want it to just look like they are crammed everywhere willy nilly. My daughter is a millennial that introduced me to the instagram plant community (never had an instagram before then, :) ) and I am so happy to have found the beautiful pictures and happy faces, along with the care tips and knowledge so many young people are sharing

I got into house plants after my dog passed away. She was very sick at the end of her life and not having something to nurture and care for left a hole in my heart. While I was out just browsing the first arrivals of succulents at my home Depot I saw a cute little succulent beginning to flower called "Lola" and I immediately knew I needed it because that was her name. After that my obsession took off. I love my plant babies and they got me through a very tough time with my dog passing. They remind me of her in a good way every single day. Plants aren't just a trend, they help so many people heal. Plus I don't even use social media,I didn't even realize plants were trendy until this.

I kept avoiding watching it cause I was like eeeek I'm not gonna be pleased after watching it but it's so true after seeing what other commenter have said - that no plant person is taking care of 50 plants every day for the 'gram.... I live in a place with harsh winters and I'd always be bummed out when it was time to toss the plants because it was too cold for them in the fall, so one year I decided I was just gonna keep them inside...and here I am 50+ plants and growing lol. I'm constantly astounded by the way plants (aroids - can't get enough!!) adjust to indoor environments and the tons of ways plants grow and store water. To take care of plants you need to do research and love them!! Thank you for this video!

This is easily in my top 3 videos you've ever made. I totally agree with you. My instagram is filled with plants because my life is filled with plants, my job is horticulture, and my passion is thus as well. Not vice versa. It's not a facade, and I know at least two people personally in my life who I can attest feel the same way. The three of us could sit for hours on end and just talk about the science of plants and learn from one another. And, beyond that, we do so without our phones out posting about it. Like you said, the genuineness, the realness of the "obsession" is horribly evident, and I don't think that those who do it purely for the social media factor will last - like all trends. In addition, as one who works in the plant industry, I can tell you that, while houseplants are something people like me cling to, it's not exclusively ours. I share my love with my mom who is now very into plants. Your mom, my friend Becca's mom, my Gen X boss, and so many other people in my life are "obsessed" with plants. One final comment - the mere fact that we all have different tastes when it comes to plants and don't all have the same "trendy" plants shows that we take this personally and into our own hands. We make it our own. When love and care is involved, it's hard not to.

Thank you for making this video. I agree with a lot of what you said. I went to a fundraiser last night for every plant purchase it went to a non profit for helping urban city schools learn about gardening and having sustainable resources. Bebee plants just posted a video about it. Last nights experience for me was meeting house plant community members and geeking out over this love and joy.

I can't think of any more wholesome, enjoyable, and harmless hobbies than houseplants!

I totally agree with you. I really feel like Social media has merely allowed us to find hobbies/obsessions a lot easier than we would have in the past. We're able to connect with other plant lovers and it's a great way to share information and educate each other. I definitely don't equate being a millennial to wanting attention via social media. I agree with you that we meet people of all ages from all different parts of the world that share a love of plants, not just millenials. Love your commentary. Keep doing you girl!

Your videos are simply fun. Whether a trend or not I could care less. My house is so dark most of the time, so I absolutely loved one of the first ones I saw from you about the low light plants. 😍🌱
