The remove tool coupled with small doses of generative fill has been revolutionary within my workflow. Needless to say, my divorce with Capitan Jack Sparrow was amicable.

Definitely going to be using this. Thanks for posting. I restore quite a lot of old photos and what I did for this was make actions that create a duplicate layer with highlights, whites, blacks and exposure adjustments that simulate -.5, -1 or -2 stops of light with a mask that I'd paint in at 10% opacity. Sometimes it's quite surprising how much detail can be recovered that way.
