  • It was the eve of the 2016 election, his friends were protesting in the street, and R. Alan Brooks wanted to write a graphic novel. Was he being vain? Self-indulgent? In this inspiring talk, Alan explains why activism needs your art. Art can scare a dictator and change the world. R. Alan Brooks teaches writing for Regis University’s MFA program and the Lighthouse Writers Workshop. He created & wrote the graphic novels, “The Burning Metronome” and “Anguish Garden,” and hosts the popular “MotherF**ker In A Cape” Podcast, which focuses on marginalized members of the geek world. He writes a weekly comic, “What’d I Miss?,” for The Colorado Sun, and has written comic books for Pop Culture Classroom & Zenescope Entertainment. Alan is a musician and stage host, regularly emceeing events like the DINK Awards Show & Arise Music Festival. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I started my youtube animation channel one month ago, “while the world is burning” and I can say it has been worth it for my own mental health, and hopefully it can inspire others and help people with their mental health too. Thank you for this TED Talk! It’s such a good message that artists need to hear. Too often, we are discouraged by well-intentioned folk.

I agree with you. I suffered from COVID and had pneumonia in both lungs in April and May - and when I see that I survived and others did not, what kept my spirit up was art. I was watching ballet right here on TH-cam and it took me out of the hole of depression COVID put me in. Art made me mentally healthy again. I don't think people realize how important mental health is.

I have been an artist my entire life so I know the value, the importance of art. Artists and poets have been activists and revolutionaries for centuries. I don't know why this popped up on my feed but I have been thinking all year how much I want to quit my "important" job and write full time. Something that he did. Wow!

Art is one of the ways society deals with social change and injustice. Comics are a wonderful venue for this. Anything is possible in art but not so much in the real world. In art if you can imagine it it can happen. Great commentary is possible to the artist! Power to the artists!

(various forms of) Art engages people's emotions. Emotions are complex yet even people with lower IQ understand or at least act how they feel about things. So emotions > reasoning/thinking.
This is why art has power.

Sadly, this is not just in the case of one race, but all races. We all were told by “well intentioned” adults whom passed on the very same things they were taught.
At the base, it’s all fear based. We were all taught to stay away from water when young. Why?
Our loved ones feared our drowning. Yet we were all born able to...so why is that?

Time cannot be wasted. It spends itself without your consent. You can make wise decisions, or foolish decisions, but time is not yours to spend. Hence, nothing you do can really be a waste of time. If art can propel you forward, it is a wise decision. If it cannot, it is folly.

I then started actually getting serious about it and started to research, and learned about sketching and how to draw a human body by sketching it and then moved to actually drawing them before starting with shading and details. I also recommend learning each part of the human body separately, ik it's a very slow and annoying task but hey, it'll all be worth it when you look at your first proper drawing, nothing can even come close to the satisfaction of complete your first drawing.
