This is the song that introduced me to Nightwish. Sooooo many years ago. It holds a very special place in my heart. Even though simple and short. Still one of my favorite guitar solos of all time.

She had 6 outfits that night. This was the 3rd. Same dress as in the 2nd official video. The original song was on the 2000 lp but Tarja said she felt like it was sung in a phonebooth. The video was filmed in the Finnish woods. She was eaten alive by mosquitoes. For ONCE (2004) they rerecorded the song and with their budget of €750.000.00 they made an amazing video. She wore that dress. The song was written at request of Finland's tourism board wanting to promote the solar eclipse of 1999. They said 3 to 4 minutes worth. Tuomas gave them 7 minutes. That concert is from October 21, 2005. Helsinki Finland ( End of Once upon a tour) Tarja's last night with the band. The regret is simply that by this album she finally was comfortable with her voice. What heights they may have reached are unknown. But Tarja was accepted and supported by the fans and has continued to grow in talent and ability . Now if you want a taste from a couple years ago, she was a guest of a group of musical Finnish Hillbillies who do covers of famous songs. They had a TV show. The band is Steve n' seagulls. Tarja was there guest in the 1st season. They have a video here. She performed both Sleeping sun and the solo hit ' I walk alone " You will be in for a treat.
Out of NW entire catalog, I also prefer Tarja's version of this. Not so much the "live" version, but the studio version. They just didn't have the WACKEN magic.

For all those who are looking so hard for comparisons between Tarja and Floor: you don't need that! There are two different voices, two different techniques and two different people. The band became known with Tarja and a large fan base was already formed. With Floor the singing changed, developed further, similar and yet so different. Taste is subjective and that's a good thing, otherwise everyone would sound the same! Sleeping Sun, Phantom of the Opera, Over the Hills are songs that I prefer to hear from Tarja because I think they suit her voice better than Floors. On the other hand, everything newer and especially The Poet and the Pendulum are written for Floor's voice to get the highest experience. That's why I enjoyed this Sleeping Sun reaction too.
This was one of the earliest Nighwish songs I'd discovered, along with songs like 'Nemo' and 'Wish I Had an Angel'. 'Sleeping Sun' was inspired by a solar eclipse.
There is a version of this song which came out via camera phone footage from the first show of 2022 tour, and Floor breaks down signing the final chorus as she had just got the all clear from cancer literally the day before (or at least the announcement was made the day before). Really heart breaking moment. I saw them live the next day and the support Floor got that night was outstanding.
no deate here! All three Nightwish singers are great in their own way. Tarja has that power behind her voice, that's so beautiful. Floor has the stage presence and the range, she can do pretty much anything from operatic vocals to guttural vocals. And with Annette, I really like her more folky style in her songs, and her melodies are really good. Imaginaerum is my favourite Nightwish album. If you want to hear an operatic Nightwish song in another language, Nightwish with Tarja has an opera ballad that's in Finnish. the song is called "Kuolema tekee taiteilijan" and it is on the album Once, and there is a live performance of it from the same concert that this video was from
This is from the DVD/album called The End of an Era, which was filmed in Helsinki, Finland. I'm pretty sure the whole concert is here on TH-cam. Finland is the land of the midnight sun, so I believe the song makes references to that phenomenon.

And Emppu's guitar solo in this👌 There are actually two music videos for this song, the first one from 1999 and the second one from 2005. Tarja didn't like the way she sounded in the 1999 version so for the 2005 version she re-recorded her vocals as did emppu for his guitar parts. They changed the arrangement a bit and this live version is closer to the 2005 music video version. The 2005 version was also the last thing Nightwish ever recorded with Tarja before the split (before this concert here, End of an Era). I didn't really care for opera nor classical singers before and then I heard Tarja sing and it all changed for me. :) Tarja is all about breaking boundaries. She loves doing that. First with metal and classical. She sometimes does classical concerts in churches and metal heads go there to watch her sing, some who have never even been in a church and then the other way around as well. Classical lovers go watch her rock concerts. Tarja also did an electronicc music project. And recently she broke some boundaries with her christmas album... Her christmas album wasn't the usual cheery one. It was dark and meant for the lonely souls.

This was the anthem to my inability to be in love. The song just made me feel I didn't want to be around anymore without love, as in I didn't want to wake up in the morning.. I didn't know Nightwish at that time, but I am a huge Nightwish fan now, with Floor being my favourite singer of all time. But this Song belongs to Tarja.... In my humble opinion.
There is nothing like a Nightwish show, seen them 5 times (with Floor) and saw Tarja last year. So amazing. Each vocalist has an awesome talent of their own. I prefer the live performances as well. Try some of the newer songs maybe?

I think you should really listen to his older stuff. Like the old money games, heretic, depression and diazepam are all among my favorites, they're just off the top of my head. I don't usually like operatic style, But I remember when I first time did listen to Nightwish back in -98. I was sold immediately. I have been Nightwish-fan since. But my favourite Nightwish-song is Ghost love score performed by Floor. Great reaction by the way.

I saw Nightwish a few months before this concert. They were amazing, and I have loved the band ever since. And although I will always love Tarja, Goddess Floor owns my soul.

You should compare the different singers by playing them one after the other as there are many songs from the earlier ones with Tarja but which Floor also redid But Tarja has this voice while Floor can sing more things
Floor can also sing pop way better than Anette, but she can't sing opera better than Tarja. But of course she can sing those songs in her own style that still makes them great.

I don't usually like operatic style, But I remember when I first time did listen to Nightwish back in -98. I was sold immediately. I have been Nightwish-fan since. But my favourite Nightwish-song is Ghost love score performed by Floor. Great reaction by the way.

Quibbling about which isnger is the best, or might've been better is just missing the point. Every lead singer was/is the best. Because they are/were the ones that propelled the band to the heights they attained.

- It is fact that Anette was the best (female) singer of Nightwish during 2007-Sept 2012
- It is fact that Floor is the best (female) singer of Nightwish during Oct 2012-present day
(Since there never was more than one female singer at a time)

Why didn't you use the version of floor when she walks out the long stage? It is the tampere version.
You should do bye bye beautiful which is an Anette song only done by her no Floor and my guess never will be done by Floor plus you get a lot of Marco but you have to do the official video trust me
You should compare the different singers by playing them one after the other as there are many songs from the earlier ones with Tarja but which Floor also redid
But Tarja has this voice while Floor can sing more things
Tarja can sing only opera...Anette can sing only pop...but Floor can sing all genres..but Hey!...you can like whatever you want😆
Floor can also sing pop way better than Anette, but she can't sing opera better than Tarja. But of course she can sing those songs in her own style that still makes them great.
Tarja also sings more than opera, maybe less so during her Nightwish years, but definitely much more since she's gone solo. credit where credit is due

@@HelMut3103Exactly without Tarja’s voice there was never going to be the Nightwish you all know and love today. Tuomas would’ve stayed doing mood music and not metal. Because of Tarja’s powerful dark voice he needed to make the music powerful to compliment her already powerful voice. To whom which Tuomas didn’t know Tarja’s voice has drastically changed.
