Seeing What Lives In Rainwater By Making A Closed Ecosystem

- It has been raining a lot and I've been wondering what lives in rainwater, so I decided to make a closed ecosystem using rainwater. This ecosphere contains some animal life as well as a lot of smaller life.
Enjoy!

Everyone: I've read your comments and you are right. This is not pure rainwater, but 'polluted' rainwater. I still think it's very interesting and exciting. I'm also planning to make an ecosphere with pure rainwater, however I thought it would be more fun to be able to use a microscope for that. I'm working on it. (Here it is: th-cam.com/video/b6Wxi6VTeh0/w-d-xo.html)
As some of you have pointed out the 'more distinct' larvae are actually pupae.
Those small organisms you were seeing were probably rotifers.
Thanks for all your comments!
How is the rain water polluted??

I've been through this before where people will give you a weird look because you're collecting samples . I like to get plants like vallisnaria from a local lake ,plus the sand is really nice . I'll occasionally catch minnows for my pond or catch some sunfish aka Pumpkinseed fish . The adults will keep their distance but it's always the kids who are curious about what I'm doing and will ask me tons of questions about what, why etc . That's the fun part when I get a chance to educate them about nature and spark their curiosity . I always enjoy answering their questions and seeing how much fun it is for them . I was one of those kids and remember having a mentor who got me interested in the hobby when I was 7 . One year I made a native vivarium display for my son's class that had tree frogs, Oregon newts and some salamanders and stickleback minnows . The kids loved it so much that the teacher had to cover it up during class till it was time to view it . It became a hit with the kids and even the visitors to his classroom . If people want to act like I'm doing something odd I don't care . It's not any different than what a biologist does .

i was expecting like, straight rainwater, not water that has been sitting there, or passed through soil/has debris.
Yeh, i dont know how this actually signifies anything :/
Well it's still technically rainwater even after it touches the ground. And this was probably more interesting and diverse than straight up rainwater. Though the title is a bit misleading yeah.

No I want pure rain water with out the touch of land boo that’s what the title falsely made you believe he should of said collection of rain water from different parts of the land 🤷🏽♂️😭😂😭
If it was just pure rainwater, there’d be nothing in it lmao. Or at least nothing living.
"Now im on my neighbors roof, because they like to keep their rain there." LMAO WHAT
Some roofs are designed to retain the water for insulation.
@readme info it's common here in AZ and other desert areas. It works here because the water evaporates fairly quick so I isn't sitting there getting stagnant or making its way through the roof to cause a leak.
@readme info it works by shielding the roof from the sun so instead of insulation keeping in the cool it's more keeping out the heat. It's mainly used for businesses. Sometimes they also flood the roof for this. I love the idea of green roofs but because o the heat here it isn't used to much. You do send a lot of solar panels and solar water heaters though.
Part of why I love this guy

When reading the title of the video I at first assumed the rain water would be collected direct from the sky as it falls. A test to see if and what survives in relatively pure rain water.
Me too, I would like to see this done
Me to not sewer water
Me too.
Same. This is not a test of rainwater, it's what was living in the pools of standing water under pots, on roofs, etc. This is not a valid test of "rainwater" when it's mixed with water from other sources that insects have had a chance to lay eggs in or has been contaminated by animals and runoff from who knows what. Still interesting though.

Since the question at hand is "does anything live in rain water?" the experiment would have been far better if you got the rain water from non-contaminated sources. Personally, if I were to have done this I would have created and sterilized a rain collector and just left it at that to see if anything lives in the rain water alone and not in the dirt, rocks, or anything else that the water would have collected while sitting on the ground, roof, and pots outside.
Yes, that's exactly what I thought... pretty disappointing if I can say so
There would probably have been nothing in it tho.
Detritus worms would have eventually formed in the jar if it was left out side with rain water, maybe other things too, these worms eat poop and other organic material in water. No clue how they just spawn lol but yeah there you go

"Im not sure what they are, but they sure are living in rainwater"
Truely inspiring words to live by...in rainwater
Sooo.. it “street water” not rain water?
After seeing what's crawling around in the water in the intro, I'm freakin' glad it's streetwater. If that all came from water straight out of the sky, I think I'd never go outside in the rain again.
But where did the water from the street come from... Obviously it was originally rain water. And unless it was just chemically created isn't all water technically rain water at some point in time?
@@evilcanofdrpepper Well sure, that's technically accurate. But the rain water that falls out of the sky was previously water vapor which condensed around a particulate in the sky until it got heavy enough to fall. It's not quite the pure water you'd get condensed on the inside of a pot lid while you're cooking, but it's fairly close to that. It's almost pure. If THAT water, caught in a jar as it falls, before it hits the ground again, if THAT water contains the larva of whatever fucking worm was crawling around the jar in the intro...I'd have no choice but to never get it on my skin again.
The water he's gathering from the street is nothing like the water caught directly from the sky. It's just like he was saying, it's got dust and dirt and whatever is on the ground mixed into it again.
Do you understand the difference? Or are you just trolling me?
Yeah ...
evilcanofdrpepper reach, reaching to the sky's literally. It's not pure rain water, which the title doesn't insinuate. The bugs etc. are most likely from the debris in the street.
