I just watched him on an August episode of Foul Territory and he was largely on poimt sbout Mike Elias. If the Orioles don't get aggressive, they're going to find themselves vying with the Rays to see who can stay out of the AL East basement.
He was hated in DC before Bezos acquired the Post. He would get on their message hub and troll people There is more to Sports and life than screaming into a mic every afternoon . The Orioles are a class act too bad the Mayor let scum riot and scare people away from doing night games
Sounds like the source wants Elias to spend Rubenstein's money like a drunken sailor. Perhaps the source would be more comfortable working with a "winner" like Arte Moreno.
Even if the source is correct…. For 2 years in a row, Elias has put a team on the field capable of winning the World Series. The talent is on the field. He took over a team with zero international scouting department in an age when international players are dominating the game; team had zero analytics department in an age when analytics are dominating the team. The decisions he’s making, are working… except that Trevor Rogers trade, what was that…. But overall, guy has earned the right to do it his way. Houston won their championship in the 6th year of the rebuild. We are following their blueprint. This is year 7, and we will be among the teams favored to win it all, Corbin or no Corbin.
My thing is this the owner should assert himself more in these types of situations bc building has been good but the bottom line is WS you can building for later and buy now at the same time. He needs to tell him his vision for his team as well
New damning report from who, some hack who has a few hundred followers? Elias has done an incredible job with the Orioles and is admired throughout MLB and as a lifelong O's fan I thing he I really appreciate what's he's been able to do. Spending money just to spend isn't the best practice which we should have learned from the Chris Davis contract fiasco that is haunting us.
He’s not spending money to not spend for the sake of his ego dude what don’t you get? Have the money to spend now and he will not spend the money only because he wants to say I did it all on my own
Pitcher List is usually credible, this article, clearly click bait from a disgruntled employee.. He needed his impressions up for that twitter payout this month .. almost no validity to it
I call the majority of this BS. I do feel that Elias needs to be more aggressive though. We all have to remember, even with new ownership we can't compete with the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, and other big market team's payroll wise. Their merchandise royalties are probably 100x more than ours. LOL.
Twins fan here. You guys don't know how good you have it. The Twins sat out last off-season (Carlos Santana was 38 years old), sat out the trade deadline (besides 1 minor move), and will sit out this off-season. Not a single major move in over a year.
Completely agree that it seems that this source has an axe to grind with the front office. Maybe a staff member or executive that was let go after last season!
As a fan of 50 years I remember the old systems and the 1960s and 1970s success when the 'farm system' played a bigger role in competitive baseball. in the early 1980s it still held up and we got Ripken and Murray, good pitching and the last World Series Baltimore has seen. The free agent market disaster for the last 30 years has gotten worse. Now MLB is not even embarrassed by what they have created. A tier structure that rewards buying championships. We can see the same trends with the Yankees and Dodgers and then next level down with Giants and down the wealth line. I walked away initially because of this seeing no solution for the Orioles. i wasn't going to patronize MLB for what it had become. I returned and took an interest in these Orioles. I liked them and rooted them on. Last year and this year though I see the same ugly monster consume it all though. Now worse than ever. 10+ year signing of 700 million or more. Some of these teams has spent nearly 1 Billion dollars in like a 2 year span to buy rings. What kind of gratitude can you get from taking trophies under this system? The we are richer and more privileged Award?. It just showed me how pointless it all was. Elias is a great guy. I understand being the antithesis to this whole MLB sham. However MLB does not care. Yankees fans are not ashamed. They will take if they can. MLB app is a piece of junk. I've done my last watching of Oriole games. Sadly I have to live with myself and realize that this is never going to work for the Orioles until MLB is stopped and forced to change.
Let's also remember that while they developed Ripken and Murray, they also paid them when it was time. Murray became the highest paid player in the AL just as he came off a period when he was the best player in the league. After the offense dropped off in 1984, they went out and got free agents Fred Lynn, Lee Lacy, and Alan Wiggins to help Ripken and Murray, offense was top 3 in 1985 (and pitching stunk) Pitching? Yes Palmer was home grown. So was Flanagan, but when it was time to pay him they did, unlike today or with Mussina in 2002, Flanagan was the highest paid Oriole in 1979. McGregor was acquired in a trade. Steve Stone acquired in a trade. 2-3 guys in the rotation in the good early-mid 90s were acquired in trades and some were costly. Right now I don't see them paying anyone. O'Neill is a cheaper replacement of Santander, Sanchez is McCann with less risk since its 1 yr and McCann wanted multi year. No extensions have been done for Adley, Gunnar, Westburg, etc. No one. They're not paying to play, they're hoping to scratch by.
I think the Orioles are doing a good job with their team building. Maybe they are looking long term to have money to lock up their young core for the future. They might be able to get some good pitchers at a lower price. I'm a Cubs fan, but I want to see how good the Orioles can be in the coming years.
Understand this the Orioles compete in a division in which they have two powerhouse teams that seemingly have unlimited resources at their disposal. The Orioles have a small margin of error to win at the next level therefore they can’t not afford to squander their opportunities. Two years ago they had the best record in the AL but Elias failed to make that big move to take them over the hump. The Yankees responded with get Soto and subsequently went to World Series. This year both Yankees and Red Sox aren’t playing any games. Orioles can’t keep blowing opportunities to take this team to next level. The clock is ticking on Gunnar being on this team so they need to strike now.
The fact that we haven't won a single playoff game, during our "window", is glaring. Elias's comments about "the time is now" etc, certainly doesn't make him look good when he doesn't add veteran players.
Go look at the 2017 Astros. What high priced free agents did they have? They were 17th in payroll…. We poached Elias from Houston, he poached Sig from Houston, we are following their blueprint.

@@tooombay11 That's a horrible example, considering those Astros cheated to win.
The orioles young stars will all leave for greener pastures if they don’t see the team spend money to improve. What I see now is a step backwards and they will likely be worse this year than last year . They should have signed Burnes and Santander as well as gotten Soto and we would likely win the division again. Plus this would make our young stars want to stay . Yes this would have cost big money, but would pay dividends.
it's going to be dissapointing if our pitching adds ends up being Andrew Heaney and Lance Lynn with the "Bradish will have a 2.50 ERA for sure after the All Star break" hope - time will tell - a trade with San Diego or Seattle may be what has to happen to get a serious starting pitcher - let's hope something like that or better happens
Are the Orioles ready to spend 30 mil/year for 8+ years on Burns? I feel that is what it is going to take. Stupid money being spent. Will need to make an offer of similar magnitude.
We need to overpay to get guys to come here. We're a small-mid market and not a flashy place to sign. If equal money is being offered between us and the Yankees, why the hell would a guy like Burnes sign with us?
The concept about not paying for Free agency makes sense when you are a bad team that dorsnt bring in fans. But now we are in a spot where we already traded prospects away for a rental and for a pitcher who is a question mark. We dont have that good of a farm system right now and we really dont know if Elias is that good in drafting because is proven successes were drsfted when we were bad and the ones after that havent reached the majors yet. This is a perfect time noe tp spend money because any other way will actually mess up our farm system more. The only reason now to trade prospects is to get a multiple yr control pircher with some impact. Other than that, spend. We havent spent that much
Sounds like ego to me with Elias but we keep falling short Elias will be on the hot seat. We can win now and Elias doesn’t realize a Championship will give you leeway with fans.
Even if a miracle happens , and we retain Burnes ,or at the least trade for Cease , how do we possibly compete with the trio of Cole , Fried , and Rodon ? We would need all our injured starters come back as effective as they were before their setbacks , and that just ain’t happening !!
That is reality. The system has to change. Never understood why there was no spending limit but then again I guess I was gullible in believing that fairness and competitive sport was still an ideal in MLB. Money is everything now.
I am confident our offense will improve this year. Our young lineup is absolutely stacked from top to bottom! All young stars will make tremendous improvements from last year. We will compete for the East once again with our stacked lineup and the additions to the rotation and bullpen Mr Ellias is about to make!!! This is how we will compete with Boston and NY. Henderson will be 40/40 Cowser will be 30/30 Westburg BIG POWER and run production improvements. I’m thinking 35 HR and 115 RBIs Holliday will establish himself as a professional big league hitter this year. He will lead the team in OBP and hits. Cedric will have an overall career year in his walk year. Both at the plate and in the field. O’Neil will hit 40 HRs and have a season that makes him opt out of his new contract. (This is a good thing! He will have a season in which he will clearly deserve a raise) The biggest prediction of all is Adley! He will be a legit MVP candidate after he had an embarrassing year by his standards last year. Go O’s!!!!!
The orioles don't have the market to pay guys what they want. We won't even fill the stadium where are they getting money from? Everyone acts like fans, go to a game once in awhile and maybe they'd have cash to sign guys.
Show the fans that the Orioles are more than just a way for billionaires to generate more money as one of their many assets, AKA put money into the team.
With every thing you said sir elias should resign asap we have a good nucleus and elias is not committed to making it better he is being criticized all over sports shows. He is better suited for drafting coordinator which he has done great but as a general manager he is not consistent with player moves
Until I see an eye opening trade or free agent signing of the starting pitching the team so desperately needs, the report isn't wrong. The current roster plays .500 ball next yr.
Those massive deals end up being bad for the organization, 80% of the time....
It sounds like his source is Jason LaCanfora
