+1 for sun shirts. I’ve been using them in the backcountry for years. They’re super light, amazingly breathable, pack down really small, and do as good as, if not better than, sunscreen. You hardly notice it’s on and the back of my neck especially thanks me.
I swear by my Icebreakers Merino Anatomica boxers. Great fit, no problem seam areas, and much more durable than I expected.

4th recommendation. I rode across the US last summer, and that's all I wore, Icebreaker boxer briefs and an outer short. (on a Brooks saddle) Its the most comfortable system I've ridden in 45 years.

Great list. I love transparent toiletteries bags and pencil cases as packing cubes. Lightweight, cheap as chips, available in many sizes and the transparent plastic makes it very easy to see what's where.

I took my garmin 1040 solar on a 1,500km brevet in March and needed to charge it 3 times over 13 days. It was a gamechanger for me, and I met a couple of others on the same brevet (Sounds2Sounds) who had the 1040 solar and it was so worth it.

I picked up a recycled merino wool sit pad from woolpower a while back when all the foam sit pads were sold out. It has been bulletproof. It warm when needed, dries quickly if it gets wet. And best of all it was $14 Canadian! Highly recommend.
Interesting list. +1 on the Tyvek too - use it under my sleeping pad. Pack cubes look really useful.
My picks: Patagonia long sleeve cool daily shirt. Keeps the sun off arms, 100% polyester, breathes well, wash in sink or creek, dries in minutes (use a kerchief for neck coverage). Patagonia Quandary 10" shorts, stretch polyester, super comfy on a Brooks B-17 saddle. Agree with you on Tyvek's many uses, great for getting out of tent door mat, or throwing down for a rest. That's a great list! Love the sun shirt, I'm going to look for one with a hoodie. Some of my own essentials include a OneUp pump, Roadrunner stem bags for tons of snacks and a silicone bag for overnight oats.
I really like the Allbirds Trino Boxer Briefs. Very nice. A wool blend that stands up to abuse better than others that I have tried like Devolders.
Love some good camp undies. I've been rocking the new synthetic ones from Ornot for day-rides and for at camp, super comfortable!
For my toiletries I use an OG Revelate Designs Pocket (the old one with the zipper). Mine is easy to see inside since it's made of XPac and the light shines right into it. Since it's on my handlebar, I also keep things in it that I like quick access to while riding. It's easy to take on/off the bars, so I just take the whole thing into the shower if I'm at a place where there is one. I'm going to miss that thing when it finally rips.
For the other electronics, I also have one of those MLD packing cubes. Super handy for keeping all that stuff together, which I especially like since there's some tiny stuff in my kit. They are very well made. Mine is made out of Dynema, but I see they are making them out of Ultra PE now (much better material IMHO).
That poop kit looks handy. I have some Charmin travel toilet paper that I just know will someday get the plastic broken and will get soaked. That kit looks like I'd have a better chance at keeping the TP dry, plus the tablets sound cool.
+1 for Mountain Laurel Designs. I get so many compliments on my Panniers from them.
Good info. But having carried a foam sit pad for years, I switched to a REI Flexlite Air chair. The one pound weight is worth it and it is about the same size as my foam roll.
Now to the poop kit. I switched to the Happy Bottom (yep it is really called that) it is a back country bidet that gets your butt cleaner than any wipes ever can. And a Kula cloth.

Outlier dreamweight merino makes a great sun shirt that’s breezy, doesn’t stink, and can also be a baselayer

I just got some Ornot merino boxers and they’re fantastic. Bonus: they’re made in the USA. For sun shirts I really like my hooded REI Sahara. I have a couple which I used for paddling and riding. I like them over my OR one because they have thumb loops which keep the sleeves from riding up which can result in a sun burn “bracelet”!
I highly rate lycra sun sleeves. No need for oily sun cream, and they are remarkably comfy even when it hot hot hot.
I like the SmartWool briefs.
My Retroid pocket 2+, though any emulator will do - i am usually out by myself for bikepacking and after a while i get tired of reading at camp (especially in winter) and this thing is like having a kindle of retro video games - its amazing and the battery is great
Down pants....jeebus.....there are days I am glad I don't ride at altitude. You are right about those inflatable seat pads, but I think Logan has it right with the chair. The Helinox Zero is heavier but about the same size as a foam pad and way more comfortable.
The wool boxers... nice. If no longer available I'd suggest looking at what the IronButt motorcyclists wear. LDComfort is popular in that crowd but a few other brands are also well liked.
I'm diving into the sun shirt game and hoping it keeps me from roasting alive in the Canelo's on the AZTR 300 like last year and also doubles as another warm layer for a minimalist sleep kit. After much evaluation, I'm going to try the Outdoor Research Echo since its more ventilated and I sweat very much. It comes in at 4oz but offers less UPF sun protection which is an acceptable trade off for me. Do you find the color makes a huge difference? Also do you have a preference on 100% poly vs a poly blend? I see many of these sun shirts come in darker colors which doesn't quite make sense to me.
To go with my Outdoor Research Activeice sun shirt I’ve been using Outdoor Research Ferrosi long pants. No more sunscreen needed! Also, As we move briefs, no chamois :-)
Icebreaker used to make a seamless version of the Merino Anatomica Boxers which I really liked. I wish I'd have gotten the "long" version, so they didn't ride up though. The regular Anatomica Long Boxers have pretty minimal seams too.

Highly recommend the sun shirt. Didn't have one in Moab. Paid the price for it.
Tyvek is incredibly loud when blowing in the wind on a construction sight does this bother you when you move around on the tyvek
UV Buffs. I find they last longer than the standard non-UV Buff and I have half a dozen and always carry at least 2, mostly used as a beanie to keep bugs out of my hair and sweat out of my eyes. Here in the UK, I ride in Keen Newport sandals from late Spring to early Autumn, if my feet get cold they act like colourful socks, albeit mismatched.
We also use buffs for hot items, as a toque, as a sweat band, and in case there are any ticks. we carry at least 2-4 at any given time each. There are many other uses as well.
Any recommendations on Sun gloves?
i have a pair of woolly boxers that out lasted meriwool , allbirds, and ice breakers.
Aside from a construction site dumpster, how do you get a footprint-sized sheet of tyvek? I went to the home despot and they only sell it by the roll.

What kind of distances do you ride. I’d really like to ditch the bibs, but I usually ride around 12 hours a day, which makes it much harder.
@@chuckyfox9284 This is what I've used for 8 weeks on the Great Divide and for 6 weeks on the Baja Divide, many 10-12+ hour days in a row. Yes, still got mild saddle sores but not sure that's avoidable during trips like that
Totally agree about Smartwool boxer briefs and Brooks saddle. The love for Icebreaker's underwear confuses me-I have two pair of Icebreaker briefs, but really dislike them due to the seam that goes right up your butt crack. The Smartwool design is much more comfortable.
Chair Zero is the shit for long trips. Thermarest Z-lite for shorter day rides with a quick lunch stop lunch stop
Will be really curious to know how the Garmin 1040 Solar compares with the 840 Solar. I'd rather the smaller setup, but been wondering if the longevity of the 1040 Solar is better with the bigger area to soak in the rays.
@bikepacking what are the advantages to carrying the Garmin Edge, vs using a Garmin In-Reach Mini and cell phone, and use Ride with GPS for navigation?
Icebreaker briefs are the closest I have seen to the borealis, I use them, all the time for cycling.

I was eondering how good the sunshirts are when you have both sun exposure and high humidity. I thinking like Florida Keys, Okinawa in summer, etc.
Wool boxers work nice. I can wear my bicycle shorts over them as there are no seams to cause chaffing. Also, the brand I bought have a pocket in the front to keep "everything" up front so it doesn't slip underneath reducing any friction. Also, a stem holder for my cell phone. I always want the cell phone on me for satellite tracking/directions and emergencies.

Regarding seats - I always just sit on top of my top tube with the bike leaned into me.
If my top tube bags were too big I'd just take them off - would still be less setup than most seats

Pearl Izumi made sun protection arm sleeves some years ago, always ride with those and a merino t shirt.
or a light grey long sleeve shirt made of a merino/ silk mix from the supermarket, so comfy, cool and doesn't stink ;-)
I used this as well for the longest time and have switched out to a sun shirt recently. The hoodie of the sun shirt makes it really worth it as it covers the neck from the sun and the ears from the wind.
Go to the back of a furniture store and check the dumpsters. You'll find more closed cell foam than you can use. $25 for a sit pad is a lot of money that's throw away material.
I ride in bamboo underwear. Similar performance to merino wool for a fraction of the cost.

Garmin 1040 solar... yeah buddy, this thing is almost perfect. I'm surprised you're only getting 5 days on a charge, but your days are probably very long. I'm a road cyclist and I go weeks without charging, on 1 to 2 hour daily rides.
