    This is exactly the unit I have in my home. It kicks in within 10 seconds every time, flawless and it’s operated through 3 extended power outages without fail. We used the power mgmt modules as well, we’re in S Fla with multiple AC units.

    • @maureen5054
      @maureen5054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @K wood The Generac is great, but for a long term power outage you have to keep filling it with oil for every 24 hours of run time. We live in Wis. so we determined how much oil we would need to keep it running through the cold winter months. We stocked up last year on a HUGE amount of the 5W-30 motor oil it needs to keep running. We will be fine as long as we can keep getting natural gas for our Generac. If that stops, we would switch over to using our power bank generators in the house and then have a gasoline generator in our garage that we would pull out and use as a back up for that. So happy that your Generac got you through 3 extended power outages too! Ours has gotten us through 3 little ones.

      @@maureen5054 ... guessing you have one of the earlier air cooled sets. (10 - 15 years old now) They commonly used a quart every two days and as they got older (high run hours) it might increase. The current generation has that problem solved and some will run a week before adding oil.

    • @RealitySurvival
      @RealitySurvival  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I checked the service manual and the first oil change has to be done at 25 hours and the subsequent oil changes have to be done at 200 hours. At least according to the maintenance schedule. Was there somewhere else that said it needed to be change more often?

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RealitySurvival ... as I recall, that's the factory recommended service, although they also call for a valve adjustment at 400 hours along with spark plugs. Personally, from 25 years servicing these things, you should do a valve adjustment somewhere around 50 hours and again by 200 hours. At 400 hours intervals they are already running poorly or making noise. Since you need to remove the plugs to do a valve adjustment (finding TDC) you'd be ahead of the game to change plugs at the same time. For most people that will be $10 every few years. No big deal. Gap the plugs at 0.025" instead of the book's 0.035" and it will start easier in cold weather. BTW, tight valves is probably the most common problem with hard starting on these things. Tight valves can also be the curse that makes for early engine failure.

      @@RealitySurvival My Generac service guy told me if the Generac is running 24/7 to shut it off every 18-24 hours. And to change the oil every 150-200 hours. I then wrote the following note so I would know exactly what to do:
      To turn off: open lid and there is an off button. Take out 7.5 amp fuse. On top of control board there is a circuit breaker switch. Flip that switch off. Let unit cool! You can then take off front panel, using both hands, push up and pull towards you. Oil fill area is orange and check the dip stick. Fill with 10W/30 oil. I was told to check it every 24 hours. Service guy told me how to read the dip stick and how much oil to put in...depending on how much oil is in the unit. You probably know all this, but I shared this info for others to read too. I wrote down everything in case my husband ever gets sick and I have to do it. We also stocked up on a whole lot of oil to get us through a Wis. winter.

    I have a Generac all home back up generator that runs on it's own natural gas line. We live in a typical neighborhood with houses next to each other. The Generac is pretty loud when it's running. I feel like it would make us a target (like a gasoline run generator would) during an emergency situation and long term power outage. We have had a few short term power outages here after some storms and the Generac generator kicked on immediately. We also have an EMP Shield that protects both the house and the Generac generator.

    We had a 20KWh Generac installed here in Virginia in December of 2016 12-13. I wish I had known a little more about these I would have gotten the wiring from Ziller I think that is more practical. I asked the installer if we needed a surge protector he told me in the 30 plus years installing he didn't know of anybody or heard of anybody needing one. A year and a half went by and a freak storm somewhere a long the line knocked out both mags, controller, and luckily stopped at that point still a couple thousand dollars. Please do yourself a favor and get a whole house surge protector. Some was covered by insurance. About three weeks after install we had a four hour power failure it was really nice to know that my house had power and was warm to come home to power on. I didn't have mobile link yet but I am glad I got it it is LTE which is cellular. I have seen where this is being phased out and will go all to WiFi soon. We got our installed through Lowe's they made the arrangements and financed it for us for 36 months I a glad we did this. One more thing natural gas runs though my property. My understanding is that we are sitting on a huge natural gas pocket. The whole region does. It’s also a dry gas. So it doesn’t need any refinement. Just have to run it through a pressure regulator. At least that is what the neighbor has been told by other farmers in the area who have them. We will see if it works out that way.

      25feet away from the house? Are you talking about a "portable" generator or a whole house generator like the one in this video? Check your instructions again again. I couldn't find that requirement in any of Generacs whole house standby generator installation guides. The only reference to 25 feet I could find was in relation to using a Generac "portable" generator with extension cords saying: With a high-capacity 10-gauge wire extension cord you can extend you power as much as 25 feet from your home. Anyway, the following excerpt is per Generac Guidleines:
      All standby generator clearance requirements are dictated by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code 37. They must be a minimum of five feet from any openings in the walls (i.e., doors,windows, sealed windows. etc.) The minimum distance from the top of the unit is also five feet. Our air-cooled home standby generators require a minimum of 18 inches of clearance from the backside of the generator (where the electric and gas inlets are located) and a minimum of 36 inches of clearance on all other sides (intake ,exhaust and from front side). Generac liquid-cooled home standby generators, as well as CorePower Series and portable units, require a minimum of 36 inches of clearance from any non-combustible surfaces (i.e., concrete, brick, etc.) and a minimum of 60 inches from any combustible surfaces (i.e., vinyl siding , wood. etc.).

    • @rupe53
      @rupe53 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eltonnoway5692 ... just as a point of order, Generac went to the pains of getting UL approval for fire rating on the air cooled sets to reduce the required distance to combustible materials. That's why you can put one of these closer than a liquid cooled set. Of course that doesn't mean local code can't be more. In my area we have some towns using 5 and 10 feet as their rule.

      @rupe53 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cenlalowell ... the key to making your fuel last is load reduction and limited run time. If you ration your use then fuel consumption could be less than one gallon per hour. If you ran it only enough to keep your food from spoiling (2 shifts of 6 hours?) and a few other items then you can cut your use to maybe 10 gallons per day.... so almost 100 days on 1,000 gallons if I did that math right. I can't imagine we would have any issue lasting longer than that. OTOH, running central AC would blow that completely away.

      @@comlbbeau ... I'm well aware of that. I was just using 1000 gallons as an example because someone else used it as their starting point. We can bring my other number down to 80 days if it makes you feel better. Still in all, that's darn close to 3 months if well rationed.

      The 22KW Generac will use about 2.5 - 4 gallons per hour (1/2 load to full load). Typically averages about 3 gallons per hour. So figure how much usable propane you have and divide by that. For instance, a 1000 gallon propane tank holds 800 gallons usable. So, on average, about 267 hours of run time on a full 1000 gallon tank.

    I can vouch for people wanting to steal these things. You hear about people stealing AC units all the time for the copper. Where I live people like to steal these whole home generators I had 3 stolen in one year. The very first one that got stolen was the very night after it got installed anf tested and ran its first time got up the next morning to it being gone. I had to secure mine inside a steel cage and anchored with 6in Long x 1/2in wide bolts to a concrete pad.

Cops that come out said that the crew doing it knows exactly what they were doing cause they have managed to steal over 15 of the things in the last 6 months and almost every one of them including mine they managed to pick up the generator still attached to the pad, disconnect the gas line, and all the electrical stuff without making a sound or causing damage to the ground no tracks were left behind. It was like it just vanished into thin air.

      Thanks. Since it’s flexible it will still allow for vibration. I don’t see how it could not. I’m sure they may say that but I doubt it will hurt anything. My neighbor has had his for the better part of a year and his is the same way. No issues with his. But I will keep an eye on it.

      Reading between the lines on those gas hoses, the notes were specifically for the rubber ones they supplied 5 years ago, but the idea is still the same. Gas flex CAN be used for a slight offset or bend, but should NEVER be used in place of an elbow. The ribbed line we see in the video is what Generac supplies these days.

      Well The probability of an SHTF situation happening is exceedingly low. That isn’t the primary purpose. The primary purpose is for situations that actually happen in real life. Like power outages due to storms. Real life not fantasy.

    • @RJMachine62
      @RJMachine62 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know, I was poking fun at you on the "Preppers Peace of Mind" on the intro but I did see "say prepping for everyday life" and you spell it out clearly in the video. I have the 24kw. With all the power outages now days you pretty much need one and with them adding more and more stuff to the grid the blackouts will probably get worst. I live on the coast and the Hurricanes are always a threat. Being way out in the country means it can be weeks to get power back. Propane availability down in South Texas has been pretty bad over the last year. Nice to have other options. Anyways, enjoyed the video.
