Charles Mingus was a jazz legend known not only for his music but also for his interactions with his audience. Audience members talking loudly during performances were his worst nightmare. Mingus expected as much respect for his performance as he had passion for his music. Noise that disrupted the audience’s ability to hear the nuances of his music was a major barrier that could affect his creativity and performance. When the audience talked during his performances, Mingus didn’t hesitate to stop the orchestra and give instructions. In those moments, music needed silence as much as it needed attentive listeners.
