Brilliant video - I just bought this and rather than read the manual I went step by step with this and even made a cushion tonight. Well taught. Thank you.
I bought this machine for my 5 year old granddaughter and started teaching her on it today. It is a shame that it came without any kind of an instruction book, but I am very experienced and figured out how to wind the bobbin and thread the machine. Then I found these videos! They will help her if she forgets and I'm not around. After watching this one, I see that I did it all correctly. Your video is very good and I'd recommend it to anyone. My only complaint so far about the machine is that it had no light; it really, really needs one. I had her sew on practice paper with straight lines first, and later, wavy lines, circles, and spirals. She'll be making her own shorts by the time school is out. Now off to brew some tea!
Thankyou so much, what a great complement. We have an even better tutorial for kids on how to thread the mini JL Or Janome sewing machine. Have a look (can't put link here or will be picked up as spam, may put in a 2nd comment) Also, I have a perfect solution for the lack of light. I use a little light made by Daylight Online called Daylight Sewing Machine Lamp but you may find a cheaper option somewhere. Tree X
Thank you so much. I have a budget sewing machine and all couldn't for the life of me work out how to thread the bobbin as all the outer tutorials were using fancy machines. With your video it was the exact same type of bobbin compartment and i managed to thread it on the first go!
+Janis Young Thankyou. Watch the NEW How to thread a sewing machine for even more instruction. Congratulations on doing it thought! Now the fun begins Tree X
Hello, yes this machine comes with 2 needles and 2 bobbins. As for whether you can sew through heavy fabric well, they say no and I say it depends! It depents how dense the weave is and if you use a strong (denim type) needle you can get away with murder. You may have to use the hand wheel to go over super thick seams and don't use the foot petal (or you'll break the needle) but if thinking of doing loads of heavy work look at a machine with adjustable foot pressure. Hope this is of some use.
thank you for talking to us like we are idiots because thats exactly what I needed--- I just wanted to turn some pants into shorts for my Boys to play soccer in. Ok Charlotte........check that the bobbin has gone into the case with the thread going anti clock wise, then look on the bobbin case and you'll see a little slot that it then goes back on it's self and into. Hold that thread not tight but just so that when you bring the needle down to pick it up, that it doesn't get sucked in, then just as you bring the needle back up let go of that thread and it should bring up a loop. And when sewing straight stitch, just use D and for zig zag use F. See how you get on with that. Tree
Hello raynette cardennas, Depends on what you think you will be doing but the Mini JL sewing machine from John Lewis £49 is not a bad place to start. Take a look. Otherwise, if it does straight stitch, zig zag stitch, goes to the left so you can do zips....then that's good to start with. Being able to change the feet and adjust the foot pressure becomes important too as you get more into sewing. Hello, the sewing machine is £49 from John Lewis and it's called Mini JL sewing machine. I have 6 of them and I think they are perfect for all of my sewing projects. Tree
Has going to buy this machine! But changed my mind when I seen a to good to be true ad, I am having trouble getting the bobbin case back in and not just the bobbin the whole case I unclipped the. Clips at either side and three bits fell out! Now I can't get started on any of these lovely ideas and I'd waited so long! Why did I not just go to Lewis's and buy the purple one I wanted then I could go back and ask them to show me! Typical! Anyone understand what I've done and can anyone help! I'm living my life by these tutorials at the moment lol, any help will be greatly appreciated. Louise x
It's easy but 1st become mates with your machine and fully understand how to thread it 1st. and remember if ever you get into any problems just go back to the beginning and re thread again. Tree
Thanks anyway, but I live pretty far away from there, but I'm sure if I lived closer I definately would. And yes I got a Mini JL sewing machine- yaaaayyy!!!
Hello ! Is this the John Lewis mini sewing machine ? I'm looking to buy the smallest machine i can find (I am a very small woman, can't carry a heavy one around!) that still has a few settings. Do you have the dimensions of this product ? I've looked on the site and not found measurements. thanks !
If you have properly watched this video and set the Stitch size to what I suggested and if you are threading it the way that I say, exactly....then maybe there is something wrong. But check 1 more time and watch this shorter video th-cam.com/video/EgU-CnpqKL8/w-d-xo.html
Hey- just got your comment on my channel :) Got a new JL Mini machine like the one you're using. The instructions that come with it are incomprehensible! After two hours of squinting at small grooves, I kind of wanted to cry. If you wouldn't mind doing a video for complete idiots, I'd be much obliged! (Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope! :P )
That's great news. Tell your daughter that I'd love to see if she makes any of my projects from my videos. A good place to start is an Infinity scarf or a Glitzy purse made out of a Kitchen Scourer. Tree
+Remo Onakoya Hello Remo, please check that you are threading the machine properly on the top but what is more likely is that you are putting the bobbin in with the thread going in the wrong direction. The rule is that once it goes in the little slot it must then go back on itself. Your tension should be at about 4 and don't use any of the tiny stitches.... Feel free to ask me more questions on my facebook page Stitchless TV sewing Vlog. Tree X
Hello.....you are right!!!!! Go watch our latest in depth tutorial on how to set up and thread this sewing machine NEW How to thread a sewing machine. Thankyou. Tree X
Another likely cause is the bobbin. If it's in it's case backwards, and turns the wrong way, "bird's-nesting" on the back of the fabric is frequently the result.
kimmichan14 Absolutely!! I know.....was actually created for Karen who was in the How to make a simple top video. I will create another one soon. Sorry! Tree
Yes I agree. Can I reccomended that you watch this video tutorial th-cam.com/video/eFABAbK4Beo/w-d-xo.html Which is a more recent How To thread a Mini JL or Janome sewing Machine tutorial. Thankyou. Tree x
I have just been to look at the video you recommended. It is an absolutely excellent video, told me everything I needed to know, I am now practising my sewing... Thank you for taking the time and trouble to tell me,
Evie Cline Hello, have you maybe put the bobbin in with the tread going clockwise instead of anticlockwise? Is it threaded correctly at the top. Take your time as you turn the wheel and just pull the top thread when you see some action in the bobbin case. Then slide a pair of sissors under the foot.... Tree
I had that same problem with the loop I'll help u know where she put the thread in dat little square thing the thread will a pear across IN dat little box
Hello Maria, can you really not do it? If you want to ask me any questions email me stitchless@hotmail.co.uk or ask me on facebook Stitchless Tree, I'm sure we can get it going. Tree
Could you do a step by step from the front of the machine? It's an okay tutorial but for us total idiots (who are baffled by the instruction booklet like me) it would be good to see it done from your perspective. Then again I've just noticed this was in 2012 so that might be a tall order.
+Jiv Pigeon No you are absolutely right, this was actually just meant for the Karin, the woman in my how to make a T-Shirt tutorial. I must do a new one for everyone using a perspective where they can actually see what's going on. Thankyou, Tree x

Where can you buy that pink sew machine?
Hello, the sewing machine is £49 from John Lewis and it's called Mini JL sewing machine. I have 6 of them and I think they are perfect for all of my sewing projects.

It's easy but 1st become mates with your machine and fully understand how to thread it 1st. and remember if ever you get into any problems just go back to the beginning and re thread again. Tree
lol Carole that made me laugh. You sound just like me. I got my first sewing machine today. Not a clue haha.

I've looked on the site and not found measurements. thanks !
Hello Camille Montaigu yes it is ting and very light! I will measure it tomorrow. Please ask again in case I forget.

i bought this machine bt my machine kept doing bird nesting & thread breaking i have no idea what to do?
If you have properly watched this video and set the Stitch size to what I suggested and if you are threading it the way that I say, exactly....then maybe there is something wrong. But check 1 more time and watch this shorter video th-cam.com/video/EgU-CnpqKL8/w-d-xo.html

+Naroa Armendariz Poor you. I know this video is not great but watch it and it should help. Tree x

I bet this would be really helpful if the camera was recording the front of the machine so we could actually see what was happening- super helpful!
+rtd8k I know......this was actually created just for the lady in the film but obviously time to make a proper version. Thankyou, Tree

That's great news. Tell your daughter that I'd love to see if she makes any of my projects from my videos. A good place to start is an Infinity scarf or a Glitzy purse made out of a Kitchen Scourer.

Mine is from John Lewis is yours? Tree
my thread keeps getting tangled and stuck in the bobbin holder. can anyone help?
+Remo Onakoya Hello Remo, please check that you are threading the machine properly on the top but what is more likely is that you are putting the bobbin in with the thread going in the wrong direction. The rule is that once it goes in the little slot it must then go back on itself. Your tension should be at about 4 and don't use any of the tiny stitches.... Feel free to ask me more questions on my facebook page Stitchless TV sewing Vlog. Tree X

Oh no......go on have a go at the weekend or come to my worshop at John Lewis Oxford St. this Sun.
Tree
You didn't disconnect the power before messing with the bobbin or threading the needle!
Hello.....you are right!!!!! Go watch our latest in depth tutorial on how to set up and thread this sewing machine NEW How to thread a sewing machine. Thankyou. Tree X
It's called a Mini JL (John Lewis) sewing machine. From John Lewis. Thankyou, Tree
Thanks sis
My pleasure
Mad ladies!
+Kelle Cooper I know........sorry!!
Gosh they keep changing them but off the top of my head...........yellow, red, purple, light blue. It's called a Mini JL and it's from John Lewis £49
Another likely cause is the bobbin. If it's in it's case backwards, and turns the wrong way, "bird's-nesting" on the back of the fabric is frequently the result.

I couldnt see what you were doing some of the time which wasnt helpful.

I think this would have been even better if the camera was facing the front of the machine, so the thread guides, etc would be able to be seen.
It may have been more helpful to have the front of the machine showing...
kimmichan14 Absolutely!! I know.....was actually created for Karen who was in the How to make a simple top video. I will create another one soon. Sorry!
Tree
Have U done a new version of this 'how to thread video' yet? I don't see one in your playlist. Lisa

TwistedGlitter yeah really I ant see shit lol!! Worst tutorial ever
I found it very difficult to see what was being done in this video, as it was filmed from the back of the machine....
Yes I agree. Can I reccomended that you watch this video tutorial th-cam.com/video/eFABAbK4Beo/w-d-xo.html Which is a more recent How To thread a Mini JL or Janome sewing Machine tutorial. Thankyou. Tree x
Thank you so much for your reply..... I will go look now. x
I have just been to look at the video you recommended. It is an absolutely excellent video, told me everything I needed to know, I am now practising my sewing... Thank you for taking the time and trouble to tell me,
Oh....I'm so glad! That other video was just made for Karen really, maybe I should make it private. Tree x
You can't change the foot on this mchine :(
Well any more problems just drop me a line.
Tree
Sew (hehe) this is when the mini JL came into play..... :) Dee
My bobbin thread won't come up and I have the same machine as you
Evie Cline Hello, have you maybe put the bobbin in with the tread going clockwise instead of anticlockwise? Is it threaded correctly at the top. Take your time as you turn the wheel and just pull the top thread when you see some action in the bobbin case. Then slide a pair of sissors under the foot.... Tree
Niceeeeeeeeeee
I had that same problem with the loop I'll help u know where she put the thread in dat little square thing the thread will a pear across IN dat little box
Emily bros how could the needle pick up the bobbin thread when the bobbin is way in front of the needle
Would love to see it! Will check out your other how to's, see what I can learn :)
