Can you talk about Radiometric Dating? Kent Hovind was saying here that it's determined by the ratio of Carbon 14 and Carbon 12. That scientists look at the ratio that exists today and assume that it's the same ratio that existed when the thing died. Your response seems to confirm this (though it was a very short response, so I may have misunderstood). His argument in this video is how do we know this ratio is the same? Is this how radiometric dating works? If so, how do we know the ratio is the same?

@@MehwhatevrBriefly, Cosmic Rays change Carbon 12 to Carbon 14 in the upper atmosphere. Carbon 14 is then absorbed by living things. When something dies, it stops absorbing C14. Measuring the ratio then tells you how long ago it died. This only works for formerly living material less than 60,000 years old.
For it to be debunked, there would need to be changes in physics over time in the way radioactive elements decay. If this were true nuclear reactors, medical radiation therapy, and anything else dependant upon radioactive decay wouldn't work.
Comparing C14 dating to other dating methods proves it's accuracy. So Kent is just blowing smoke out of his mallet.

I believe that there is a God or some sort of creator, but I am not sure about the details. A God certainly could have created the big bang billions of years ago. I can't prove it, but you can't prove it wrong either. We most likely won't ever know for sure while we are alive, and possibly we won't even know after we are dead.

if you can't prove something is true or can't prove it it's wrong, then science doesn't care about it. you are thus free to believe anything that suits you, but as you said, you then must accept you will never know.

When I was a Freshman and Sophmore my mom put me in a Creationist School. We went to Kens museum/exhibit thing. They had a piranha in a tank and claimed it was only a year old but larger than and piranha in the wild because the raised in a red light. Similar to how the Earth was once encapsulated in a water membrane and the light coming through would have been red...thats why the bible had giants and people living for hundreds of years...I told my mom I had to get out of that cult school she obliged and ultimately I had to get my GED because obviously the school was not accredited in TX. Now I have a B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Systems. I'm doing just fine without God and those tounge speaking lunatics.

I was raised Christian, my mom used to take me to see people like Kent, and I used to believe all that nonsense until I was about 18. Now, when I look at these guys, they all seem like the epitome of pure evil to me. I'm so glad I broke out of that cult.
Took me until I was 35 to come to terms with the idea that religion (i.e. belief in a god of some sort) was most likely simply the result of early man's desire to explain the things they couldn't yet explain. It was one of the most profound epiphanies I've had in my life. I was amazed at myself for not realizing it so much earlier in life. Just goes to show how large the blinders are that religion relies on in order to exist.
@@wallyman292 Yeah, my mom was brainwashing me with that trash for a long time from before I could speak, everyone I knew and everyone I was friends with were Christians. Deciding it was trash wasn't a quick process, it took about 5 years from my initial seeds of doubt to grow into a full deconversion. Definitely worth it now, because I no longer worry about me or people I love going to hell when trying to fall asleep at night.

I do not believe in organized religion. Given that there are over 4000 recognized religions in the world, it always seemed rather confusing that they ALL claimed to be the one, the true. I learned early that most operate as business and in studying history, confirmed that. Given this, I will say that I cannot discount the idea of a creator. Who says they could not have created the Big Bang? That said, I am a devotee of the scientific method. It is mans method for theorizing about the space around him, testing and refining his theories. Man has a brain - it must be there for a reason. Refusing to apply it seems wrong to me. I do not subscribe to the theory that any creator would endeavor to create beings with such brains and discourage their use.

Not the best quote. Science doesn’t prove anything. Additionally, while the test results may be the same, that does not preclude more evidence is found that changes the understanding of what those test results are showing.

Scientific experiments are done to demonstrate that a given hypothesis holds true under a given set of circumstances.
Based on each other the next set of experiments can be done to show demonstrate & explain other things in the observable environment. That's about it.
Creationists/Theist "observe" something, can't explain it with their narrow mind and "explain what they see" with: "God(s) did it!"
They are unable to move beyond their "Holy Book(s)".

@@Sekhubara I honestly think that leaning into evolution and the big bang would make Christians a stronger case. As in, look at the vast chaotic and random nature of the universe, but trillions upon trillions of countless variables brought us to where we are today. As an atheist I just chalk this up to confirmation bias as in of course we as a species who benefit from the nature of our environment would think it to be perfect in many ways, but it would be a lot less alienating to most and speak to the grandeur of god if Christians embraced science as a whole.

But it is very easy to conflate scientific theory with scientific fact.
Evolution is a theory, despite it being taught in school as fact. SciManDan stopped the video at that, because it is a very messy debate indeed, and any biologist ends up having to admit that evolution is just the best "non-god" theory for the evidence, but there are lots of holes in it.
It's much like looking at a piece of cotton clothing and saying it's completely solid... you can't pass a ball through it. But the closer you get, the more you start to discover that while it is indeed held together, there are lots of little holes. Not a perfect analogy, but I hope good enough to get the gist.

Man I'm going off on a tangent but watching people like Kent reminds me so much of this incident that happened in my childhood.
We started going to this new church and I remember my mom pretty much forcing me to go up and let the "speaking in tongues" lady put her hand on my head while she prophesied.
I was 10 and I couldn't contain my laughter. Picture this lady with her hand on my head going "shamana halala ratata" and me trying desperately not to burst out laughing. I felt horrible about it because the entire congregation looked like they were disappointed with me, and my mom looked embarrassed. I wouldn't say that's exactly when I stopped believing that kind of nonsense, but it definitely planted the seed.
I was slowly but happily beginning to forget this man existed.

I like how Kent disproved the age of the earth just by thinking about it for a minute. And the age of the sun just by thinking about it for a minute. And radiocarbon dating: debunked by thinking about it for a minute. And he corrected the idea of plate tectonics by thinking about it for a minute.

Usually whenever they try to debunk radiometric dating, it's done by 'Christian Scientist' that don't understand what their doing. And to boot, none of their attempts to debunk it are peer reviewed because they'd literally be laughed at by actual scientist. The things these people do to pretend their fables are literal history.

In addition to both the above, there's the obvious of the Bible neglecting the fact Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals existed entirely, and things like Noah's Ark actually being a retelling of a story from other religions, including the Epic of Gilgamesh

The issue with creationists is their immense discomfort with unanswered questions. "Where did time start?" - "Where did matter come from?". I always fail to see how these questions are an argument for god. Jordan Peterson, a so-called intellectual, follows this same logic by saying the universe isn't "deterministic" at the quantum level - therefore god. The leaps are ridiculous. I'm an astronomer and astrophysicist and I have to say, if I didn't have questions to answer I'd be incredibly depressed. Yet these people are so intent on replacing every single answer with "god did it" to kill any dregs of curiosity leftover from their childhoods. Often, they simply don't understand the science so they utterly reject it.

I had a friend, since passed on, who firmly believed that she would see me, the non believer, my spouse, the lapsed Catholic; and my kids who are an interesting mix of things in the belief area, when we all passed over eventually. She also believed that a whole lotta people who think they've got it right are gonna be shocked and disbelieving when the gates don't open for them. There are levels on which I'd sorta like to find out that we're all wrong here and that it's so very different than what anyone is expecting 'cause the monotheistic religions seem to have adopted all the worst traits of human rulers in their deities. Regarding the Big Bang, my understanding is:
1. The BBT doesn't explain what happened in the first 10^-40th of a second (something like that).
2. The BBT explains everything _after_ 10^-40 seconds very, very well (modulo the Crisis in Cosmology).
3. The BBT also doesn't try to explain what actually caused the Big Bang. It only explains what happened from shortly afterwards.
4. Cosmologists generally don't agree on what caused the Big Bang. It could be cosmic sheets, it could be quantum fluctuations, it could be the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
5. Best we understand, there was no time or space before the Big Bang. Time doesn't extend infinitely into the past, it only extends 13.7 billion years. There was no before that, something which is really hard to wrap one's head around. It completely doesn't match our everyday intuition.
In regard to science I’ve come to understand that we are still literally newborn infants. There is a long way to go before we grasp certain things. Hell, I’m a middle age high school drop out working in a factory and the math flies over my head, but still - thankfully have some critical thinking skill. Wish I could see what we grasp in another 200 years

But after that happens (supposing it does), what then? If there's a critical point of mass where two supermassive black holes carrying all the matter of the universe collide with each other, would that have potential to start the cycle again? Enough concentrated matter that a "Big Bang" event is inevitable. Well, I'm certainly not smart enough to figure that out, and I doubt anyone on this planet, with the science we know today, would be able to either. Hell, our species and probably our entire galaxy, will very likely long be dust before an answer to "what happens next" could ever be fathomed. Is this universe truly a one-off event? Or is it maybe cyclical?

I remember as a kid someone showed me a Kent video proving an atheist wrong and I thought it was such a great video and he made an awesome point. I'm not a religious person but I am spiritual and believe in a higher power and believe that we get back what we put out. You can be a drug addict alcoholic and if you are still doing good things towards others then you will still get good things coming to you but then if you're a sober person but you are stealing and doing wrong you will get bad karma back. It all comes down to how good you treat others and do right even if your "sinning" by consuming drugs or alcohol. It all boils down to what you put out to the universe and how you think. The again you can be a drug addict who steal and cheats and that's what you'll receive. And so on and so forth. With that being said I also believe in science. I don't know where we came from and I don't know if we evolved from apes but I have a feeling there is other life out there and we possibly came from another planet and we possibly were genetically modified to be the humans we are today. I'm not a Bible scholar or Bible thumper either but I do think that Christianity is a great blue print for how to live your life. That doesn't include the lies we were told that we can't get tattoos or can't be gay or we should fear God. I'm talking about be a good person, help people, love your neighbors. Sure, you can argue >4 billion years old, but if asteroid dust is 7 billion years old and the oldest Moon rocks are already tens of millions of years older than the oldest known Earth rocks. I'm certain we can start saying we are wrong about Earth being just 4 billion years old at this point. I also do not understand how human scientists think dust from the formation of the solar system hitched a ride on a 220-pound rock and survived entry into the atmosphere. It sounds like that dust needed to embed itself deep into the asteroid to survive such a thing, and there's only two ways that can happen with one being - if the sun did not exist - that the asteroid formed with said stardust inside it. Personally, I know this solar system is much closer in age to that of the estimated age of the universe.
