In the late 1970s, Mercedes Benz released their 2nd generation S Class, the W126 body which was such a big hit that they sold it all the way from 1979 to 1990. Improving on an already near perfect design takes a huge engineering marvel. To achieve such monumental tasks, Mercedes Benz spent over 1 Billion US Dollars in 1980s money into the R&D of the best Mercedes Benz S Class ever made, the W140 S Class.
Sporting numerous mind-boggling features such as CAN BUS technology which was literally unheard of in cars at that time, double paned glass, self retracting trunk handle, rear vanity mirrors, side airbags, electrically operated centre rear view mirror, 722.6 5 speed electronic transmission, optional air suspension, a magic carpet ride, and most importantly an optional 6.0L V12 engine, it was beyond compare for the 7 Series E38.
You could get the W140 in 3 wheelbase forms. A short wheelbase W140 (280SE/S280, 300SE/S320, 400SE/S420, 500SE/S500, and really rare 600SE/S600), a long wheelbase V140 (300SEL/S320, 400SEL/S420, 500SEL/S500, and 600SEL/S600), and the coupe C140 later known as the CL Class. Engines ranged from the base model 2.8L I6 M104 engine with 193PS, all the way to the massive 6.0L V12 M120 with 410PS.
This review is on my post-facelift 1997 V140 S320 long wheelbase with a 3.2L M104 I6 engine developing 230PS, and 315Nm torque which is while not fast, is nowhere close to the definition of underpowered.
The best Mercedes S-Class ever made.
Former Vehicle of Philippine Vice President Dr. Salvador "Doy" Laurel
    MY: 1991 - 1999
    3rd generation S-Class
One of the best W140 in the country (Philippines)

Leather dash with stitching, leather door armrests with stitching, Amaretta ceiling, leather sun visor, two tone Nappa leather with stitching

A much better review of the W-140 than Doug Demuro's lazy effort which got 1.4 million views! (?) . You failed to touch on the soft-close doors and trunk which on my '99 S-320 still work flawlessly. Also, the SWB like my daily driver handles and maneuvers very well for not only for a "big sedan" but any sedan. "A giant taught to dance on its tip-toes" as one reviewer put it early on. Putting TOYO tires on a W-140 will get you 6 years of hard labor in Germany. tsk-tsk...kids today.

    • @KyleLiongCars
      @KyleLiongCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for that! That definitely means a lot hahaha!
Actually the soft close doors were optional in some S280 and S320 models. I already had mine checked if they are faulty, turns out, mine never came with the soft close mechanism altogether.
      Toyos are great though 😂😂

I actually live in N.America, Colorado, just off of a turnpike ( highway), and my 3.2L 220HP w. 5-speed transmission W140 seems to be happier in the higher revs, highway traffic. If it lags anything it would be in the city traffic when I will occasionally just downshift. Can't speak to the 4 speed.

    • @KyleLiongCars

Guess this is proof that even in the USA with big roads, the 3.2L is not underpowered :)

@@KyleLiongCars No, in fact, the inline 6 is regaining popularity as the most balanced configuration and BTW; I stand corrected, it's 228 HP and 232.0 ft.lbs. @ 3,750 rpm. and naturally asperated. The W126 500 SEC only put out 231 HP with a 5L! That's less than my 'X' wife used to put out and about the same weight! No I 'cruise' at 100 MPH at about 3200, maybe a little more RPM. all the time. These car are too under powered to be a 6 cylinder.. my friend just had to rebuild the engine at 150k miles and now the transmission wont go into 5th gear.. 1995 s320. Found a youtube video that says its a easy fix (got to insert a pin by the gear shifter but have to removed everything from center console. The problems are coming in hard, blower resistor died so AC wont shut off unless you disconnect the battery. Jus ordered the part 64.99 on FCPeuro (best place for lifetime warranty parts). turning signal died, we changed the light, turns out the wire harness for the lights started to melt (same problem I had on my BMW 328i). The right door stopped opening and recently the fuel pump most be going because car just loses power. We changed fuel filter, added a fuel additive and also drove the car till empty to put fresh new gas (always use Super 93) and no luck. Its kinda sad because my 1991 Cadillac brougham d'elegance lasted me 280k miles (purchased with 90k) never had any problems at all and I sold it to someone that still drives it today with no problems. All I had to do was minor stuff like some suspension parts that cost me a couple hundred buck and just regular oil changes. I will never buy a German car again for a while. It just doesn't make sense. I need my car to work.

I belive you never worked on the V12 M120 Engine or have watched to many TH-cam videos of incompetent V12 owners or those that wanted a cheap Mercedes W140 V12 .
It is so easy to work with you wont belive but only for the owner like my self that knows the Engine .
Only thing i could advise is that a V12 owner should have his Personal Scanner [C4-5] to check for fault codes if something isn't right not to just throw unessesary parts by gussing what a problem might be like many do .
Dont be affraid of the V12's , they the same as S320-S420/500's just that some parts are double .
Some say that the S500 V8's are only 1 second slower then the V12's , trust me it's more then that .
Aah that Torque (580kpm) on take off in 1st or 2nd gear .......... or keeping revs at 1600 rpm , at those rpm , the 580 kpm is always available (what was that i saw in my rear view mirror ,aah , an S500 lol).
This dosen't mean to rev the Crap out of the car but just to add . M120 engine standing at traffic lights ,one actually has to look at the Revs dial if the engine is on as it is so quiet & smooth .
Go get that V12 & never look back , once you got one, you never look at any other W140 Variant again .
