    Hey Matt my wife and I raise chickens too and we had an identical problem with our chickens a few months ago. What we discovered is the Leghorn chicken (white one) was aggressive towards the others and actually killed one of ours before we figured it out. I would recommend pulling the white chicken out and see if things improve. That's what we did with it's and all our chickens are back to normal. Plus I know how much you dislike that white chicken. We laugh everytime you talk about it because we feel the same about our white chicken. Hope that helps

      Charles Mesnard good call. It's all about the breed. I favor the Astralorp, Orpington & Wyandotte. So many breeds with mild temperaments, why bother with the others. Ok, there are good reasons why, but not in my backyard. (:

      This is pretty similar to what we had happen, but the only difference was we caught it happening on a camera we had setup so we had fried chicken one of the following nights.

    The plucked feathers are the chickens going through what's called a "pecking order". It's normal with female hens. There's no way to make them stop. It's not bugs. If you want to treat the gorund or the dirt, use diatomaceous earth. The size of the opening for the nesting boxes are fine. The chickens don't really care. Hope this info helps. Happy chicken farming!

    Your chickens are bullying each other. Ideally, you'd have a rooster in the flock to maintain dominance, but without one, the hens are fighting to be the top dog, so to speak. The white one is probably the meanest one and no one is messing with her.

    The chickens are just pecking themselves or each other. It’s definitely not mites because if it was there would be feathers missing from all over their bodies. My chickens have the same patch of feathers missing from their backs except for one so my best bet is that in every flock there is a dominate chicken that pecks the other. Yours unsurprising is probably white chicken. Also the nesting box opening is plenty big enough. If it wasn’t they wouldn’t be laying in it.

    Chickens dominate the others by pecking and jumping on each other's backs like a rooster would during mating. Most likely white chicken is the culprit. There's always that "one" in a group of hens...kind of like women. It's a pecking order. I'd put out grit or crushed oyster shells and more roaming/scavenging time and space for bugs. Feather loss would be sporadic all over their bodies if it were mites.

    • @Menkii
      @Menkii 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      DaisyAggression yeah mine did that too or if there is a light in their coop keeping them up they'll pluck each other's feathers out from stress

    • @nickcrawford4540
      @nickcrawford4540 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could also be that they are malting

    • @The4x4Mama
      @The4x4Mama 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nick Crawford if they are molting it wouldn't just be their butts missing feathers. Their chests and upper necks would be bare or patchy as well. They also wouldn't be scratched up. They're doing it to each other to establish a line of dominance. The more torn up you are, the weaker and bottom of the ladder you are. White chicken is queen since she's the least messed up.

  • @connorburgess9560
    @connorburgess9560 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Hey Matt what your seeing in the chicken more than likely is just them picking on each other and pulling feathers. This is frequently called the pecking order. If you still have concerns about mites the two things you can look for are: 1) mite eggs. They look like very small white specks they will be near the comb and under the waddles. 2) the more direct options would be to look for the mites themselves. The will be small orange specs crawling around the skin near the base of the feather. Most commonly you'll see them under the wings or almost always near the vent. If you have them my personal method to treat them is a good garden/poultry mite dust on the birds, coating there legs in vegetable oil, and coating the comb and waddles in coconut oil. Also never hurts to sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the coop.

    If I'm not mistaken, in your coop, you built two perches one in front of the other. In my experience, the ones in the back will peck at the ones in the front. Chickens will not normally face each other when sleeping. Perches need to be separated.

    HELPFUL COMMENT! Chickens are attracted to red/pink. They attack at pink or red so the other ones are probably pulling out their feathers and attacking. Tsc sells a purple cream (chickens can't see purple) that will make it so the chickens won't attack. Also, don't let the girls go in the coop with red or pink nail polish. I've done this in my sandals and the chickens attack at them!! Hope this helps!!!!!

    Matt, make sure the white chicken is a hen, not a rooster. My dad has had chickens for around five years or so, and whenever he gets a rooster by mistake, it will try to mount the hens, causing the hens feathers to get ripped out in that same spot on all of them. The white one could be a hen and just asserting its dominance by mounting the others as well. Just some food for thought.

    There are multiple options stress (seems unlikely), molting (unlikely pattern), mites, lice and/or feather peaking (because of boredom or deficiency in the food).
    Feathers and eggs are predominantly protein. Adult chickens require diets between 15-17% protein depending on which chicken resource you rely upon. Protein deficiency's are not uncommon, bugs can help, come breeders will supplement with cat food. Also grits are very important so they get enough calcium.
    Chicken can get bored very easily, try to make food harder to get, sprinkle in in between pine cones or hang a piece of lettuce high up, so it is hard for them to reach, make a treat ball etc.
    Chickens love the color red. Chickens love to peck at red things including blood. Chickens can become cannibals if left to their own devices. Blu-kote can help with that!!
    You are treating for mites and lice so that is good.
    Consider giving your ladies a dust bath, it help them clean there feathers and eradicate mites and lice. They love it, of course it does have to stay dry.
    Good luck, hope this helps :)

    Option 2. And as for the sound you should get some high flow cats and replace all the cats (you can easily reach, cut and weld) with highflows and either replace the mufflers with some short 8"or 6" cherry bomb glass pack mufflers or if you aren't worried about price get some borla mufflers

    The Monte Carlo has a carb with a manual choke that needs to be set before cranking to start when cold. Just step on the gas one time before cranking. That will let the choke close so it will start up without having a long crank time when cold. When the engine gets warmed, you don't need a choke, so it will start right away, without stepping on the gas. Just an old guy talking.

    Matt, you ever heard of a 396 big block? Reliable and dependable, just make sure that the headers have clearance on the steering box. You will also have to swap/modify the front engine mounts, maybe a bigger radiator, fan with cowling....but.....it will give you what you want! Also if I remember correctly a 454 is just a small block that has been bored and stroked to the max....correct me if I'm wrong?!?

  • @neathway382
    @neathway382 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    That's not molting. Molting is not concentrated like that, and wouldn't hit every chicken in the exact same spot. Your laying boxes look fine. I would tend to think it's either an infestation, like you suspected, or you've got a bully in your flock. Check for one that doesn't have a bald patch. If you find one, that's your culprit.

Ivermectin a drop on their back for mites and lice every 3 months and sprinkle diatomaceous earth in barn will keep parasites and flies under control. Also the openings are fine for the boxes if they were to small the chickens would just lay eggs under the boxes. :-) Love watching all the channels! :-)

    • @fakecubed
      @fakecubed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Chickens don't peck each other's backs like that. They go for the head and neck. After all this time living together the chickens should have figured out the pecking order already and not have a lot of problems, certainly not a whole bunch of fights all at once between all of them to cause so much damage. It looks like self-inflicted wounds over irritation from mites. They can reach back and peck at themselves, sort of like how we itch ourselves. The thing to do is treat for mites, clean up the coop, new bedding, and hopefully that will fix the problem.

  • @slimjim5171
    @slimjim5171 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Pecking by other chickens usually on there backs is usually caused by stress, boredom or protein deficiency. Or heat stress. Hope this helps. You can debeak your chickens to stop this. It's done a lot with egg laying chickens also with turkeys. But regrowth can happen.

    • @slimjim5171
      @slimjim5171 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Green Lightening debeaking them only takes off the top part of there beak and normally only about 10%. This stops them from being able to pull feathers out. But they can still defend them selfs and eat/drink. And I would take it that they don't sleep in there nesting boxes so they have the whole chicken coop to sleep in and wouldn't think it would cause fighting between them. Just my thoughts. And just trying to help.

    502 w/ weiand 8-71. You’ll make 800-1000hp easily. You’ll also be able to spin your tires doing 80, if you so wish. I would do an air locker in the rear, simply because having that diff on the highway will make it much more enjoyable to daily, and you’ll still be able to munch rubber at the flip of a switch. Also, a four link rear end and new control arms in the front along w/ coilovers will allow you to keep all that power moving in the direction you want it to.

    The chickens can pluck each other if they are in a tight space. If they have lice then give them dry sand to make sand baths it helps to get rid of the lice. The openings are the writing size but if they can't see each other and it's warm they will lay more eggs.

    Tractor Supply or some other feed store will sell a product called "blue kote". It is an iodine based product that will help keep the area clean. The bigger benefit is that is stains the skin BLUE and the hens stop picking on each other. Feather picking can result when hens are in an over crowded environment or stressed. It can get started when the hens are over mated. Once the skin is exposed, the other hens will continue to pick feathers. Use "blue kote" with care because it will stain your clothing too!

    We've had that problem with our chickens in the past & it was for 2 different reasons. The first was cause by our rooster. I don't know if you guys have a rooster but we separated him from our girls & gave them time & their feathers came back. The second was because of mites. We solved it by giving them diatomaceous earth to dirt bath in. It was an easy but very affective solution. If you don't see any mites it could be molting... Sometimes when they molt they'll pick at each other causing the redness. Good luck!

    Chickens will peck and eat each others feathers out of bordom and lacking protein. If blood appears on the chicken they will pick the bleeding chicken to death. Feed extra meal worms to raise protein levels and give extra snacks/treats to keep them busy. If the chickens dont have enough room in their coop it can also cause feather pecking problems. Each chicken needs 3ft square are inside the coop. And a 1square foot area for the nesting boxes. Any other questions about chickens for me just ask i raise them for eggs as well. I have alooot lol. • @rosieoutlook24

    A question board for chickens appears to show that is not an uncommon problem and is usually some form of pecking issue. One person had some luck adding fat to their diets and some protein as well as adding some enrichment (hung a cabbage up in the afternoon for them to attack.) Apparently, feathers are high in fat. Try adding some suet to their feed and move their run around a bit so that they can get more bugs (they kind of pick it clean in fairly short order.) The poster wasn't sure whether it was the higher protein, added fats or the enrichment but it worked so I'd go for all three. Some are choosing to roost on the ground from the holes I see in the video so you might want to vent the nesting boxes better - they might be too hot. That would irritate the skin and make it itchy, leading to plucking. Kind of like hot spots on dogs.

      My son and daughter in law used to have chickens, and yes, they tend to both spur each other *AND* peck each other, (supposedly) trying to assert dominance. It's supposed to be worse if they're confined into too small of an area, so perhaps, if you could figure out some way to give them a larger area to run in during the day???

    I think for what you're looking for, you'd be happiest throwing a big block in it and eventually a bigger cam and upgraded valvetrain if you really want it to make noise

    If you're engine swapping, the 454/502 conversion is more period correct and makes for s more believable restomod. But the 502 introduces issues with frame flex on launches, as would a high-powered LS swap. Monte's are built to cruise, so a high horsepower/high torque engine may require some rigidity improvement in order to prevent warping in the frame. However, as the 70 chevelle shared its frame with your car, and was available with a 454, a well mapped engine build of that type, with a good posi-trak rear end and a hand fitted exhaust would maybe give you both the power and sound that it sounds like you want.

    I think you should do option 2 but not just option 2 I think you should also super charge it. It’s gonna be super fast and have that beautiful rumble and make the rear possy so big car big block big rumble and super charged that sounds amazing

    Don’t know if this comment is a repeat, but as someone who had a ‘72 Chevelle SS with a factory small block, a big block is a direct drop in, I did not even have to chance the frame motor mounts to drop the $150 402 ci in my old toy. Miss that old car sometimes.

    Option #2 - Big Block. Go with a ZZ502 crate engine from Chevrolet Performance
    www.chevrolet.com/performance/crate-engines/big-block-zz-502-deluxe
    508 HP / 580 lb-ft Torque. Nice choppy sounding idle too.

    You've already got a good base start with the 383. Supercharge it and put a mild cam in it. It'll be a great engine and will get better fuel than a 454 or 502.
