Still my favourite SU&SD episode. Funny, interesting and actually exciting at times. And what a great game Armada is too!
I wrote that comment 5 years ago and only just completed my obscenely vast Armada collection this year, post-COVID! Oh how things have changed in that time. Even taking away the Armada element, this is still the most enjoyable play-through I’ve seen of any game on TH-cam, by any channel. It’s like late-night Friday programming from Channel 4’s peak in the 90s. Have a fantasy internet BAFTA, guys. You’ve earned one many times over.

Armada iiiis thoroughly enjoyable. A bit draining on account of setup but thoroughly enjoyable.

I know all of these from empire at war. The assault frigate mk2 is probably one of my favorite ships just on how it looks.
I just wish the Tartan Patrol Cruiser survived the purge.

@@JonatasAdoM uh, only like half of them did for example rebel heavy vehicles are nowhere to be seen and the hover tanks used by the Empire are seemingly exclusively used by the clones because they're nowhere else to be seen.
Oh and apparently they lost their turrets.

The only problems are how expensive it is, (not a problem if you have a friend dedicating to splitting it all) and it's draining on account of all the setup.
There's an online boardgame engine called VASSAL (yes all caps) so if you already learned to play it's a free way of getting experience.(it has online)

Armada is certainly the superior game, both from its rules design standpoint and its tactical depth.
I wonder if it would be fun to triple the range/speed/etc on everything but also triple the scale of the board (if you have 9'x9' of space and can make custom rulers.) All the maths stays the same (you're effectively just scaling down the size of the minis and their bases to 33% of their original size), but you've got far more space to maneouver around in. I always found it a little unrealistic that the crux of space battles in SW minis games often comes down to maneouvering without crashing in to anything.
just so you all are aware, quin messed up. You can't have engine techs on a victory 2 class star destroyer, since there is no support team slot. However if you bought the Rebellion in the Rim expansion you get a title for the victory called "harrow" what this allows you to do is have support team slot. My true nerd just came out of me as I said this. Sorry that I am 6 years late.

In the Star Wars d20 game I played in college, we took out three star destroyers in one round (six players). Every roll was a crit. HILARIOUS.
Dude also stole Vader's mask, which *almost* caused Vader to destroy the destroyer he was on in rage. Also hilarious.
Forget the concussion missile, you should put these cards on Demolisher -
Advanced Proton Torpedoes (from MC30)
Engine Techs (for that extra 1 move after you move)
Ordnance Expert (lets you reroll blacks)
That's pretty much the bare bones for GSD
Once you go OE and APT, you'll never leave home without it

3 at speed 0 you can’t resolve defense tokens. That victory was dead a combat phase earlier as it can’t redirect
It's not at a real speed 0. It bumped at speed 1, so it's still technically set to speed 1. It still gets to defend.
Classic wave 1 Armada. My favourite game! You should come test the waters again, post wave 8 this game is bonkers.

Best Rebel strategy "hit and run"
Shame Quinn didn't see the Bombers, he probably would of made his last move a squadron command. That could of won him the game if he used the Gladiator to Squadron command the Tie Bombers they would then fly in at 4 Speed and bomb the Corvette. 2 Black Die would of had a high chance of a crit hit. The Corvette just needed 1 more hit! That would of put Quinn at around 237 if he sunk the corvette.

Very entertaining as always! But by god all the errors... :P
1. Victory star destroyer cannot take engine techs. (Does not have the correct upgrade slot)
2. You forgot to use defense tokens on the gladiators first attack, the one called "redirect" could have moved the damage to the far side, and saved you some actual damage cards.
3. "The squiggly bit" (I.e. the evade defense token) does not work at close range. So, you could have screeded your black dice and got a hit and a crit. Why didnt you shoot with the gladators front before it moved? You'd still get to fire that one shot after the move ;).
4. Quinns! You even said you had a reroll from swarm, but then didnt use it! You did remember the extra blue dice from howlrunner later though :D
5. You did want to scatter that one damage with howlruner, it is 1/3 of her health :P.
6. Quinns... engine tech token? :P. ENGINEERING QUINNS! ENGINEERING!
7. I'm pretty sure the cr90 was dead after that shot by the victory. It had taken 2 damage already from gladiator, and took two more. Its 4 health gone. Somehow, the first crit card it got from the gladiator was gone and only one card remained... again though, did you accuracy his defense tokens? Otherwise could have saved it with them.
8. With the attack on the "potato", you can use more than one defense token per attack. So brace, and move the damage to another shield side would be a good idea.
9. Its howlrunners job to get engage and get shot at by b-wings with bad anti squadron fire, preventing them from attacking the star destroyer.
10. QUIIIIIIINS!!!! WHY DID YOU NOT SHOOT THE SIDE ARC WITH GLADIATOR AFTER MOVING INTO THE POTATO!!! It would most likely have died (only two hits left, 4 black dice, yeeah).
11. YAY! You remembered the last time. Nice shooting! :D
7. The CR-90 is the ship that miraculously landed directly on the space station discarding its critical damage card.
Outside of that though I don't know quite enough to know if anything else you said isn't correct.
Actually, the cr90 gets the crit (second damage card) at 6:14. The card can be clearly seen at 10:01. As quinns is talking about moving his gladiator and "finishing off the thing, where he fancies his chances" the card just dissapears in a cut screen between 10:18 and 10:19. Its very odd :p.
This is nowehere near the station either :)
There are also two other errors. First the Nebulon shooting with two Arcs at the Viccy, which wouldn't have been possible, because there was no line of sight between the two white dots between the two hull sections, like wise with the gladi against the potato(aka Assault frigate mkII). THe thing with the corvette, i think he repaired the damge at round two with an engineering command. But also the possition of the Cr90 shift between round 4 and 5, as it was much closer to the edge of the table previously, and might have flown out of bounds, also it weas moving by 4 the whole time,a nd suddenlay it was only 3? . . .
They also swapped first player back and forth.

I know this video is three years old so it's probably been established, but in case it hasn't...you can't put engine techs on a VSD naturally.
What is best ? X-wing Miniatures or Armada? i watched both reviews and they both look like 2 good games... i need some advice.. which one should i start to buy first ? and play ?
MrRan8300 I have no experience with either game myself but I still offer this advice: Look up some videos about the two! One such review compares both games, if you look up "Armada VS X-Wing" it should be the first video. From what I've read so far, Armada is the cheaper one but the most expensive get started, as the starter kit is pricey.

If you prefer instead to feel like a fleet admiral watching whole battles go down before you, sending thousands of people to doom or glory, do Armada

Armada and X-Wing is good, but I think it is much better with narrative play. So, part of an ongoing campaign with objectives with different points levels and fleet restrictions for each side.

Anyone know how this game handles turn orders? Do players alternate one ship at a time? Move all of their ships? Do they have to commit to movements before knowing the other player's plans? (The open discussion of tactics by the players made this less clear to me.)
One player activates a ship and reveals the command. If it's a squadron command, immediately activate squadrons equal to the squad value (VSD=3) Then you make up to two shots from different firing arcs. Instead of shooting a ship, you can shoot all squadrons in that firing arc(making bombing runs dangerous) then you move.
Then you alternate turns activating one ship.
Did this only contain the core set or did you use some of the expansions?
They used Wave 1 expansions.
it'S an old video, there are plenty of new expansions now, especially the Imperial Star Destroyer and Home One.

I don't understand the tactics to use here, so I'd like to ask some questions. I can't so I'll make uninformed observations instead.
1. Binding the Imperial fighters up in the rocks looks like a good idea because they couldn't interfere with the B-wings and couldn't make effective use of their own bombers.
2. Everyone ganging up on the Star Destroyer seems like it was a good idea.
3. How did the Nebulon wind up caught between the fighters and the S.D.? Was there a way to avoid that?
4. Given the speed of the Corvette, could it have gone counterclockwise around the Imerial battle line or would that have needlessly risk contact with the Imperial bombers and the Centurian? The captial ship on Quinns' right, whatever it was. The SS Danger Duck.
5. Could the A-wings have been used to help screen the Nebulon or the Corvette?
6. Would the TIE Fighters have been better spent screening the S.D. and not taking up the middle of the formation between the S.D. and the Danger Duck?
7. Did someone use Die as a plural for Dice? Interesting.
Oh, look, I did ask questions. But to no one in particular. Awww!
That does seem like fun. And it might be interesting to replay the battle from different angles and using different starting positions.

Even if the defense token is red you can still use it. It will just be discarded. Luke could still be alive.

Besides different dials it's mostly on a larger scale.
There are a few different things, the primary thing is that you shoot and then move in Armada.

Not all units perform this way. Some units can both move/shoot or shoot/move. Also some cards can give you this ability.
Old video...but you have to shoot first with your capital ships and then move...you can't move first and then shoot.
Quinn you kept wasting Skree's ability on your Victory when you should of used it on your Gladiator since it couldn't get a single crit XD

Why didn't the corvette evade or redirect or anything during the first attacks round one? Damn thats some real bad fleet commanding. Yikes. Think I can see how this is going to end already.

Huh , is it me or should that ISD be about 10 times bigger than the rest of the ships?
It's a victory class star destroyer, which is much smaller. Of course, the scales are not entirely (or even particularly) correct (its a sliding representational scale), but the ISD IS a LOT larger :D

That's the Victory class, not the Imperial. The ISD model is substantially bigger.

looks like random chance over strategy.
Some dice are designed to be more random than others, basically representing that it is harder to hit with certain weaponry and at far ranges. Red dice are unreliable and swingy, blue dice are very reliable ship to ship, and black just murders things at close range. There was some absolutely appalling rolling going on, and outside of chess (that has no dice :P) there isnt much to be done with that kind of statistical outlier :).
Armada is actually one of the most strategic miniatures games I have ever played. The maneuver tool, giving the sense of big ships being slower and harder to turn in addition to having to plan out orders for bigger ships several turns in advance make it a game where you have to think several turns in the future.
Another mechanic that really makes it strategic is that you shoot -before- you move. No "move and shoot" for anything but that gladiator with the special title "demolisher". So you have to know where you and your opponent will be -next- turn to shoot. :)
not really, positioning is really the key in this game.
Just jump to hyperspace and kill the imperial fleet
