Dajae - U Got Me Up (The Lost Mix)

  • Back in the 1990's, two Chicago natives, R&B singer Karen Gordon (Dajae) and electronica/house producer Cajmere, joined forces to bring out some of the hottest hits in house music. One of these classics, "U Got Me Up," blended together modern dance percussion with 1920's jazz, sampling "Barnacle Bill The Sailor" in the process. Other dance producers like Danny Tenaglia and Derrick Carter have delivered their own takes of "U Got Me Up," but there's one version that I know of that has yet to surface.
As far as I know, released only to KPWR106, there is a special edit of "U Got Me Up" that mixes the "Cajmere's Underground Goodies Mix" with "E-Smoove Got Me Up Mix." Both versions are available separately - Cajmere's version on iTunes (link provided); while E-Smoove's mix is hard to find, possibly out of print. The only person who might be able to tell me about whether this "Lost Mix" exists is none other than the legendary DJ Richard "Humpty" Vission.
What you are hearing is a rough copy of "U Got Me Up" as I originally heard it back in the 90's. It may not sound exactly like this, but the fact that both sounds were joined as one is significant. This song was recreated using Adobe Audition 3, utilizing the vinyl rips of "E-Smoove Got Me Up Mix" and "Cajmere's Underground Goodies Mix," and the MP3 release of "Cajmere's Underground Goodies Mix" (starting the song with softer percussion). I am highly aware of the vinyl quality sound, but that's what I was stuck with.
Another thing: it is NOT the B96 Chicago version that Murfreebar uploaded to his personal account.
If anyone has any information about this lost remix, post here. I am also encouraging the original artists (Dajae, Cajmere, E-Smoove and others) and other DJs to check out this so-called unreleased version to see if they can provide me with details I may have missed. The purpose of uploading this song is only to learn of its existence, if it does exists. Once I have all the answers, THIS SONG WILL BE DELETED.

This is the Eric "E-Smoove" Miller mix. It's unmistakably his style of that period.

Alfredo, What you describe is a total trip. I bought a double 12" vinyl from Exodus Records in Montebello in '93 when KPWR 106 was playing it. I listened to all 4 sides, to realize the mix I was hearing on Power was not exactly the same. I was 18, drove my VW Bug over to the station, where Morales (DJ) politely gave me a heads up that what they played was a custom version. The best scenario would be to record it when it broadcasted.

So the one I re-created was basically a special version made exclusively for Power 106? And, as for that song, they don't play it anymore.
I need to ask Morales if the song I re-created is the same as the one played on Power 106. Can you have him post here for confirmation purposes? My hope is that this "Lost Mix" is released to iTunes - I would definitely buy this single.

Alfredo Rodriguez darn! I responded to this right after you did, but it's not here. That was like 21 years ago that I visited the station and Morales was good to come out, Alfredo. I did send an e-mail last week to KPWR, Nick/ Erik Vidal (Baka Boyz), and Big Boy, but haven't received any responses, yet.

I was checking this out solely to hear the E-Smoove mix, which is one of the only two versions I had yet to hear (Derrick Carter's is the other). It's madd smooth, too. I hope you get the answers you're looking for, but I will respect your wishes and leave this right where I found it, for better or worse.

Alfredo, Question for you.. Does the e-smoove mix almost have an acapella in the mix somewhere?? I think I can recreate the b96 version. I'm using the Danny Tenaglia's Club mix for the first verse (all it has is a clap in the background) I'm missing the second verse and few little you got me up screams and such from Karen. Is anything like that available in the e smoove mix?

I *think* it does, but I can't guarantee it. The symbols and drums in the E-Smoove version are well within the first part of a few words throughout the song. The one I clearly remember is at the very end of the E-Smoove version, where Dajae sings "I was down, down", then the "down-down-down..." repeats into a fade out. It's been a long time since I've listened to the E-Smoove version. || Are you looking for the full version of the E-Smoove edit? If yes, I want to forewarn you that the song is VERY RARE. You will need to purchase the original vinyl; it's not available digitally.
