  • This month on Epilepsy Explained, Dr. Nathan Fountain, MD, Professor of Neurology and Director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at the University of Virginia, answers questions about epilepsy medications.
Drug therapies are available to treat people with epilepsy who have uncontrolled seizures. Healthcare providers prescribe epilepsy medication/seizure medication based on a number of factors, such as the patient’s seizure type, epilepsy syndrome, and age, to name a few. For most people with epilepsy, the first anti-seizure medication (ASM) they try will work for them; others may have to try multiple medications or a combination of medication and surgery to control their seizures.
In “Epilepsy Medications Explained”, Dr. Fountain answers the following questions.
    0:00 Introduction to epilepsy
0:16 Why do I have to take epilepsy medications?
0:53 When can I stop taking epilepsy medications?
2:30 How does a doctor decide which epilepsy medication to prescribe to a patient?
4:36 Why do medications control some people’s seizures but don’t work for other people?
6:36 What kind of side effects can medications cause and why do they cause side effects?
8:20 When should I talk to my doctor about trying a different medication?
9:51 How many medications should I try until I give up on controlling my seizures?
11:40 Can epilepsy be cured by medications?
