Singaram is introduced as a character who isnt strong to take Petta by strength, already he got his legs injured. Also in the scene where he asks Petta to get out, when Petta stares at him, he stops raising his voice and feebly asks him to leave. You should watch the movie again. In the climax Nawazuddin is awestruck by the change in VJS. If you watch his first dialogue in that scene, he would say “moththama pazhi theethutalla” (here nothing really happened to him other than breaking in to his house but his word is “theerthutalla “) which he points as a reference to turning VJS against him and immediately Rajini jumps in and takes the conversation to revenge of all he has done so that VJS doesn’t get suspicious. There was second chance to Nawaz to reveal when VJS says he is Saro’s son. Till then Nawaz was thinking VJS turned, because of the posting when he hit by saying “for Saro” he was bewildered and out of anguish he says “tharamaana seigai “. Again Rajini jumps in and takes the conversation away and prudently asks both Sanath and VJS to go out. That’s a master class scene.
Anybody feels Anwar's character could have had some sort of an arc? He's feels like just a prop in the second half. A character who gets almost as much screentime as Rajinikanth, could have been written with a bit more depth, IMO.

when rajni had 3 reasons to convince vjs that he is his son but there wasnt anything from nawaz is disappointing but atleast for audience they could have given a glimpse of wrap after everything unfolded which was missing, similarly if rajni didnt say vjs about this at the end nothing would have happened but revealing the twist and then deciding whether to leave him or kill him is all just to hold the twist which was good enuf but missed to hit the bull eye with a small percentage if they have convinced audience with some reason that he is really nawaz son.
This twist was needed since Rajini needed VJS help to get inside. So if this twist wasnt there, Nawaz would have been even weaker than he already was. There would have been bigger gaps in logic - like if his son was alive, why dint he save his son at that time, rather went to save poongodi. On the other hand, just like to remind that this isnt the first time there were huge gaps in logic in a Karthik Subburaj movie. Take Pizza for example, where VJS gets locked in a "haunted" house. Its enough for the employers to check the address which VJS went to deliver to find out. But most of us ignored this simple point and were convinced by that
@@sharath1857 I. Am. Not so convinced that he need vjs help to get in and Al... That's just writers lazy writing.. Csuse one side they show rajni as so powerful. To. Kill anyone.. And he had vjs at his gun point too... Plus nawaz is a physically weak. Character... So all in all for me...it looks like twist for the sake of it.. And a lazy writing at that
There is one thing which Bharadwaj failed to recognize that the family members of Singaar (Nawazuddin ) were (Hindu) religious fundamentalist which develops over the plot and end up being in Uttar Pradesh which justifies the intentions and existence of negative Role in this movie.
17:52 I think that the scenes prior to the climax between Rajni and Nawaz indicates that Nawaz is a timid character, who fails to look Rajni eye-to-eye and communicate effectively. Instead, he resorts to cunning plots to defeat Rajni. Therefore, he has been cornered by Rajni in front of Vijay Sethupathi, and immediately goes back to his shell of non confrontational behaviour. Again, if Nawaz had to explain to Vijay Sethupathi that he is indeed his son, there was an opportunity presented when these two share a moment at their place, soon after Rajni has supposedly rescued VJ from those goons.
Boss, Rajini is a Mass hero and he has a big opening so he should only do rajinism based movies people in large only expect that from him...For acting kamal, vikram surya etc are there so rajini is not needed for acting roles .
Kindly correct me if I am wrong. Talking about the earlier Karthik Subburaj films - There is always this shift or multiplicity between genres as the film progresses. For example, Pizza starts as a horror and ends as a heist movie. Same shift can be seen in Jigarthanda, Iraivi and Mercury. Judging Petta keeping this in mind, isn't it a perfect Karthik Subburaj film as the first part starts as a Rajni film and it translates to a dark comedy in the second half?
Gowtham A R Just because there is a shift doesn’t mean it’s good, the shift has to be natural and convincingly good. Mercury and Petta’s shifts weren’t convincing
Really appreciate the Q&A and analysis. A great sign that there is intelligence and appreciation for art. Rather than a few nonsensical folks who review, I don't know what. :)
5:00 i was thinking like why Nawaz didnt say anything to VJS is because Nawaz actually thought like VJS is rajini's son. Nawaz was not in the village when rajini's son growing up. he didnt know who is rajini' son. when he suddenly show up to bomb that place he thought like it is rajini's son. thats why VJS have fire marks on his body. Nawaz was stupid in the beginning of the story and its a mistake happened to Nawaz. its my guess maybe i am wrong.
You have reviewed and liked Zero while extensively decoding the subtext and meta references in it but you have a different opinion on petta which has some similar kind of references, why?
I feel the political elements in the film are pretty obvious (even if not of great quality or particularly deep), and inserted to try to convince Tamil audience that Rajinikanth is not a 'BJP sleeper cell' as he has been accused continuously... 1) Stops the guy immediately when he asks "Who are you?" - A reference to the fiasco in Tuticorin 2) Superficial comparison between ragging in the movie and political criticism against him in real life 3) His support of a Muslim guy marrying a Hindu girl (done to show his opposition to the concept of accusing Muslims of committing 'love jihaad') 4) Setting the villains in UP with Hindu extremism on the rise - 'Anti-nationals' killed, 'anti-Romeo' groups, Cow vigilantism - This is as subtle as a sledgehammer 5) Trans women delivering the baby on the train - One of the points in his political guideline book is apparently that trans women can be part of the ladies' wing in his party (I am willing to concede that it is not necessary to read it as pertaining to Rajinikanth's politics - But cannot completely be written off either) 6) The last one is accidental (or a Freudian slip), but fittingly it is 'meta' and can be used against him politically by his critics - They can always say he uses Lord Rama as an example and says he fooled Vijay Sethupathi (a quintessential dark skinned Tamil guy) whose father (leader) has just died - Similarly, his stand in this film is a diversionary 'Rama/BJP tactic' to fool the Tamil audience into thinking he is not pro-BJP when in fact he is!
What if VJS is actually someone who was adopted by Nawaz and probably not his son? There is a small shot where chinna is actually seen playing with a bunch of kids. And when the bomb goes of we see his body along with few kids. There is a small frame in which Nawaz stops searching his sister for a moment and observes the area where chinna died. My theory is that maybe one of chinna's playmate was actually alive and Nawaz adopted him. Maybe that's the reason why Nawaz isn't completely honest with VJS when he confronts him. Moreover, Nawaz is completely indifferent to VJS unlike an actual father and it makes me wonder if this might be an untold twist to this story.
My theory is that the Singaaram and his brothers are shown to be casteist in the movie and Jithu is probably the son of a lower caste woman (I took the liberty to assume it). He was indifferent to Jithu for that particular reason. He simply dusts it off when Jithu confronts him as he doesn't see it as a big issue. And Singaaram is clearly shown to be someone who can be intimidated easily and not particularly quick thinking, so he is perplexed and doesn't know how to deal with Jithu in the climax.
When Nawazudeen got slapped by vjs, Nawazudeen understands that Rajinikanth cheated him and he replies "Tharamana seigai". Nawazudeen already had conversation about this thing with Vjs but still Vjs believes in Rajinikanth, that's why he doesn't want to interfere Rajini's plan. And we already know that he doesn't have much affection on Vjs.
Why didn’t you see the political references in the movie? There were couple of them apart from the hindutva stuff, like the ‘seveergala illa seyanu’ and subtle dialogues in the first half and villain name.
Am I the only one who noticed..that Anwars mom was a older woman on the youtube channel pic..but after the flashback you see the younger actress from the flashback?
14:08 didn't it strike you when Rajni during the fresher's party says.." pudhusa vanthavangala.. yerkanavey erukuravanga adikura arasiyal enga erunthu dhan arambikuthula.."
How can rajinikanth pay homage to himself? It was more of callbacks and referencing moments from imp rajini moments. Wish karthick subburaj created unique scenes which could have been a callback moment in future.
" The way of Killing" was similar Nawaz fooled Poongudi , bombed them & Gun Shots ..Sound. Rajini Fooled Vjs..bombed via Vjs.& Gun Shots Sound while he takes his Medicine puff. i really feel nawaz was wasted @ climax scene the way he sat on that chair ..
Nawazuddin couldn't convince because he was not sure if he was his son or rajni's son. If you the scene where nawazuddin character gets a dark shade, there would a boy coughing ,so no one is sure who that is and that is what i have understood
Actually Nawaz character not responding to VJS is natural. He actually gave post etc to his other son. He has a certain rugged bond with VJS character. And his complaining tone about not getting post etc. He just thinks he is in this weird zone. So he got him to go have a drink. but Petta plotted to have a gang attacking VJS. And VJS also shot Nawaz other son. At this point, it is a point of no return. There is nothing that Nawaz character can say anymore. This is how son-dad separate. Nawaz is quick to get this. He knows he is played. Fact is one cannot simply give such a proof as a dad to his son. Normal families - good dads- this never happens. But for a dad to engage his son in rowdy and mafia activities - this kind of bond doesnt happen. There is nothing that Nawaz could have said to VJS. All he has to say was said earlier in the movie.
Nope when the bomb blast happens at the temple. Nawaz goes to the two kids and we can hear one of the kids moaning. So he may thought that the kid was rajnis. And took it with him. Incase if Rajini comes for revenge. Before that Rajini knew his son was dead that Nawaz didn't know. Do Rajini made a an that Nawaz didn't know that my kid was dead, And he used the plan to continue.
Nawaaz and VJS both could be clouded with thought that VJS was not given post in the party hence they didn’t wanted to tell or hear an explanation coz their mind was already set for the outcome
Kamal has a lot of fans, he doesn't have the family audience with him cause he doesn't do films for family audiences.. he do films what he likes and that's what defines Kamal Hassan.. The most versatile Indian actor ever!
probably Nawaz didnt know either if its Rajini son or someone else if you noticed from the blast site some one murmur and Nawaz notice probably ...or like you said kind off cheating...
I don't understand why you keep saying Rajini is shown to be morally correct in the first half and turns into a KS style character in second half. Even in first half, you see shades of negativity like the recommendation for the interview scene. All the good things he does like fighting for lovers, applying oil to an injured student is only because it's his brother's son. In my view, he is never shown to be a morally uptight person.
I think VJS character is actually Rajni’s son, but Rajni is not aware that he wasn’t dead. Nawaz takes him under his wings and when VJS asks him for the truth, Nawaz doesn’t show proof because he thinks Rajni has finally realized that his son is still alive and hence he cannot do much.
Sir what if vjs is not singaram son he just uses him something like that no !? An adopted child and he is silent because he comes to know that vjs is not worth it ! #myview

I have seen this movie 5 times already. Each time i was scrutinizing to see if some scenes could have been avoided to shorten the length timw as you said. But i didnt feel so. It onky becomes laggy in the last scene . Then again the twist compensates for all. Remeber padayapa and all also was almost 3 hours but not boring. Petta too is like that. There wasnt any boring instance. I actually saw the truth im the eyes when general audience said the movie was enjoyable. They werent lying. Whereas for viswasam even those who said it was nice did so with lies and dull eyes!
First half was the best Rajni movie despite few flaws while the second half was generic cliched revenge story that ruined the movie. I wish the second half couldve been more interesting. Anwar and his wife characters couldve been better casting instead of sasikumar. Some 80s or 90s movie hero wouldev suitd well.
Slowly making VJS believe and gradually admire his nemisis Petta is the tharamaana seigai. No matter how hard Singaram have tried he wouldn’t have convinced as VJS is clouded by anger that his elder brother got posting and he is doing goonda stuff and hit men like duty. Nawazuddin chooses the fair skinned sibling to his political motive as pushing a tamil speaking son would be bad move for him. In all sense nawazuddin and jithu were too selfish and politically cunning.
Kaala was far better, where rajinikanth perfectly fitted into ranjith's movie character, without compromising much on how rajini would have reacted in each and every scene. Except the last 30 mins, kaala was so convincing as a movie
To be honest, Petta is not a movie for all audiences! Only hardcore Rajini fans may enjoy the whole movie! Indeed I enjoyed! I could see the neutral audience become upset last two hours! The first one hour is not looks like a movie and it was like the compilation of many frames which shows Rajini as stylish and grace as possible! When the movie enters into the story people don’t have anything to celebrate! Hard true! I even don’t know why Rajini is always mentioning war war war war war war war war becomes irritating at some point!

Anwar n pongodi went Australia after Anwar born . So rajini is single right , y can't he take revenge immidiately ? Can anybody explain . I might have missed to noticed something..
This is what Rajni alludes to when he says "Ithu naan vittu vecha pakai. 20 varsha pakai" when he is in the hospital with poongodi, anwar and the collector are with him. He feels the same, that he should have taken out singharam sooner.
It was clear that he didn't want revenge when he will say in pre climax to Nawaz that you could have settled here with all your wealth and power but you chose to touch Anwar again and hence the revenge.
As a rajini fan I feel enough of this rajinified and he has to choose the path like amitabh. Big B was the angry young man but after certain age he changed his mode and concentrated only on acting and that fetched him 3 National Awards. Also when fans of rajni fans will release this I personally feel kaala was wow and we saw actor rajni after 70s. Ranjith is far better than subburaj

when rajni had 3 reasons to convince vjs that he is his son but there wasnt anything from nawaz is disappointing but atleast for audience they could have given a glimpse of wrap after everything unfolded which was missing, similarly if rajni didnt say vjs about this at the end nothing would have happened but revealing the twist and then deciding whether to leave him or kill him is all just to hold the twist which was good enuf but missed to hit the bull eye with a small percentage if they have convinced audience with some reason that he is really nawaz son.
It got dragged towards the end so much that.. Didnt connect or feel any excitement in the twist.. As if I didn't care at all what happens to them
This twist was needed since Rajini needed VJS help to get inside.
And a lazy writing at that
Please see this if nawazuddin siddiqui character was a dumb ( a person who can't speak) I guess the movie would have been better
Shakti Vill fully filmy la sutathu thana😹😹
:)
The best rajinikanth film
Loved the songs from petta
5:00 i was thinking like why Nawaz didnt say anything to VJS is because Nawaz actually thought like VJS is rajini's son. Nawaz was not in the village when rajini's son growing up. he didnt know who is rajini' son. when he suddenly show up to bomb that place he thought like it is rajini's son. thats why VJS have fire marks on his body. Nawaz was stupid in the beginning of the story and its a mistake happened to Nawaz. its my guess maybe i am wrong.
please comment your thoughts on this
You have reviewed and liked Zero while extensively decoding the subtext and meta references in it but you have a different opinion on petta which has some similar kind of references, why?
Yaaaasss. Thanks BR. ❤
Petta was really good BR. Your rating isn’t fair
one and only super star ...one and only thalaivar mass maharaja....
Can anybody tell what is the age of baradwaj rangan
Sir, why you didn't review Seethakathi?
Is this the shirt which u wearing is CELIO
I feel the political elements in the film are pretty obvious (even if not of great quality or particularly deep), and inserted to try to convince Tamil audience that Rajinikanth is not a 'BJP sleeper cell' as he has been accused continuously...
1) Stops the guy immediately when he asks "Who are you?" - A reference to the fiasco in Tuticorin
2) Superficial comparison between ragging in the movie and political criticism against him in real life
3) His support of a Muslim guy marrying a Hindu girl (done to show his opposition to the concept of accusing Muslims of committing 'love jihaad')
4) Setting the villains in UP with Hindu extremism on the rise - 'Anti-nationals' killed, 'anti-Romeo' groups, Cow vigilantism - This is as subtle as a sledgehammer
5) Trans women delivering the baby on the train - One of the points in his political guideline book is apparently that trans women can be part of the ladies' wing in his party (I am willing to concede that it is not necessary to read it as pertaining to Rajinikanth's politics - But cannot completely be written off either)
6) The last one is accidental (or a Freudian slip), but fittingly it is 'meta' and can be used against him politically by his critics - They can always say he uses Lord Rama as an example and says he fooled Vijay Sethupathi (a quintessential dark skinned Tamil guy) whose father (leader) has just died - Similarly, his stand in this film is a diversionary 'Rama/BJP tactic' to fool the Tamil audience into thinking he is not pro-BJP when in fact he is!
That might be an unedited version
1k th person to like the video..........
14:08 didn't it strike you when Rajni during the fresher's party says.." pudhusa vanthavangala.. yerkanavey erukuravanga adikura arasiyal enga erunthu dhan arambikuthula.."
Sir, homage ah homaajh nu dhan sollanuma ?
How can rajinikanth pay homage to himself? It was more of callbacks and referencing moments from imp rajini moments. Wish karthick subburaj created unique scenes which could have been a callback moment in future.
" The way of Killing" was similar
Nawaz fooled Poongudi , bombed them & Gun Shots ..Sound.
If you the scene where nawazuddin character gets a dark shade, there would a boy coughing ,so no one is sure who that is and that is what i have understood
that was a red herring. The collector was Petta's friend and do you think he wouldn't have known if chinna's body was missing??
@@turnerpar Everyone knew that chinna died the same day except nawazuddin because he doesnt know the figure of chinna
Hi BR, putting forth a fan request, we miss your takes on non recent movies, can you please do #AskBR on something older? may be Attakathi?
Enjoyed your analysis..
Now here is the real question Does BR like Baasha or Petta more?
Nawas did said that VS is his son.. Pls watch it again..
Terrific analysis
He didnt tell vjs coz he was not his son! He was a kid frm the bomb blast.. not Chinna but somebody else!
tats wat i think!
That shameless guy who said just because u like Kamal , u dont like Rajini...Marana replyy!
That was one Butt hurt Rajini Fan
Does kamal even have fans? Maybe countable by finger.
Kamal has a lot of fans, he doesn't have the family audience with him cause he doesn't do films for family audiences.. he do films what he likes and that's what defines Kamal Hassan.. The most versatile Indian actor ever!
According to your expectations, the move run time should be extended to 15 hours.
probably Nawaz didnt know either if its Rajini son or someone else if you noticed from the blast site some one murmur and Nawaz notice probably ...or like you said kind off cheating...
9:27 The truth finally comes out :)
Petta nice
Really like the way BR pronounces homage.
Please do Zach Snyder's "Watchmen"...
Do #AskBR on pithamagan
Mass movie petta
You will understand the movie only if you watch it second time.
Premnath Arivazhagan Yeah, as if this is Last Year in Marienbad
Exactly ,there is too much things crafted in the direction and screenplay that it makes Intelligent BR look dumb 😂😂😂
This one movie destroys all reviewers that they are half baked. Excellent script writing
Thanks for the qa sir. Your perspective is a delicious medley of the intuitive and the passionate
Regarding Bobby Simha comment, think of him as a character not as Bobby Simha in this film.
I personally think that vjs really was rajnis son. That would explain nawaz Not convincin vjs, etc. ..
What are you guys talking about. I saw the end twist coming a mile away 😮
For me too🤣🤣
Sir what if vjs is not singaram son he just uses him something like that no !? An adopted child and he is silent because he comes to know that vjs is not worth it ! #myview
BR nalla bulb vaanguraar.
Sir If some Actor/Actress is not fully utilized in this means , that should be the Worry of them . not ours cos this is Rajnikanth Movie , Not someone else .
Karthik Kumar It affects the film more than the actors. No film is bigger than its Star. And if the main villain is weak then the film is also weak. Imagine petta’s nawaz in films like padayappa or baahsa. You think those films would have worked?
@@saiashwin26 yes.. I agree but from the beginning itself they have showcasing Nawas (called as sullan)is not much great then Rajnikanth... What I would say please don't compare any actor with there previous movie. They are actor's they must do all kinds of roles and appart from review I Never heard any negative Mark on the movie.. and in the initial teaser it's self they're promoting that we should get" Rajnified " .. and that happened.😇
Yov Vaathuvaya slow va pesu
Mr. mottai boss... Watch the movie again.. After watching it again u review... Ippo mental maari olarura...
Petta was fantastic for 2hrs but then e last 30mins, Vijay sethupati's role looked messy & confused....
His character was confused between Rajini and Nawaz then. His first few scenes are too good
Pls wacth again u will undestant
#Petta(BlocKBusTer)...😉
First half was the best Rajni movie despite few flaws while the second half was generic cliched revenge story that ruined the movie. I wish the second half couldve been more interesting. Anwar and his wife characters couldve been better casting instead of sasikumar. Some 80s or 90s movie hero wouldev suitd well.
10:57 genuine question .. even I felt the same. A good twist shouldn't do that .
Do you agree Nawaz should have been replaced with Somasundaram
Rajini came to screen is enough for their fans.. If not his fans just dun watch his flim.. Dot.
I loved kaala more... had story and at the same time had Rajini mass scenes 👌👌
Nah...prakash raj would have done perfectly
Or anurag kasyap would be 2nd choice
Major spoiler alert guys !!!!
Very honest review bro
Vivek Keviv but Rajinikanth film still housefull till Sunday this says this movie is loved by many ok and viswasam is avg movie
Jerry Clinton I really don’t how to react bro! To be frank People who come out from the theater saying that the movie is good just for the name sake! Even when I come out from the theater I said the same. And I didn’t say anything about how viswasam is! After your text I’m sharing now. Petta wins fans heart Viswasam wins people hearts! I just shared my personal opinion here! No offense! Happy Pongal!
Vivek Keviv ya bro because of second half sentiment like daughter father other than that viswasam is avg only 1st half is totally waste Ajith comedy and Ajith talking style is worst they narrate like theni language it does not suit Ajith that my point
Vivek Keviv dance is ok according to music and bgm and mass and style petta wins in my point only in sentiment viswasam wins
Petta
As a rajini fan I feel enough of this rajinified and he has to choose the path like amitabh. Big B was the angry young man but after certain age he changed his mode and concentrated only on acting and that fetched him 3 National Awards. Also when fans of rajni fans will release this I personally feel kaala was wow and we saw actor rajni after 70s. Ranjith is far better than subburaj
Boss, Rajini is a Mass hero and he has a big opening so he should only do rajinism based movies people in large only expect that from him...For acting kamal, vikram surya etc are there so rajini is not needed for acting roles . Amitabh lost his market way back in his 1990s
Well said
Agree bro
No . we want Mass Rajini. We want Rajini style, fight.
you reviewer spoiled Karthik Subbaraj
when iraivi came out you should have said he is not good in handling 3 main character and he doesnt know the dynamics of the character instead you admired the movie look what happened know again you spoiled him when he is going to know the truth
isnt the reviewer responsibility to tell the truth
