In this edition of Behind The Akshon, we take a deep dive into the Clockwork Vendetta comp and analyze how this team was able to achieve such unprecedented success and secure a spot for themselves in Overwatch Contenders EU 2019 Season 2.
Clockwork Vendetta is a European Overwatch team that has made quite the name for themselves after fighting their way through the competition in the Open Division and Trials before eventually taking down the likes of Academy teams and secure a spot for themselves in Overwatch Contenders EU Season 2.
What makes Clockwork Vendetta a standout roster among the many teams around the world vying for a Contenders spot is the methodology the team employed to climb through the ranks and rake in their wins. Notorious for being a team that rarely scrims and featuring a lineup of specialists, also known as "one-tricks", Clockwork Vendetta is now synonymous with running unconventional hero picks and actually winning with them despite their compositions being "off-meta."

Update that may or may not be right: CV placed second (out of 8 teams) in the round robin in the Overwatch Contenders 2019 Season 2: Europe and lost the semifinal playoffs 2-3 against HSL Esports, they did really well considering they didn't have that much practice and were up against the ones who won the tournament.
Sadly, Engineer, Moose and Zytor left the team in a short period a few moths after the tournament which really hurt their synergy and the role lock also put Munkmutta on a handicap since he could no longer swap between dps and support so I think that's when CV started to slowly decline in performance. Eventually the team disbanded when they lost most of their players to Valorant and didn't want to build a new roster for the third time
Turning a DPS ult into a defensive support ult is genius
Counter-ulting has been a thing since forever.
In OWL, teams counter grav with grav or Rein would shatter from inside being grav'd.
Yup and there’s also throwing a dva bomb to stop anyone from following up on a grav.

@@zyonhenderson67 Well, things like this have been used a while, but never have they been used by mei and Torb on actual pro games xD. People have used hanzo ults to ult their own bunker comp for a safe area, or used hammond mines on their supports to protect from dive. A lot of people actually use emp defensively as well, so this kind of AOE defensiveness concept isn't new. But having this on torb and mei is so bizarre that people HAVE to notice it. It's wonderful to see such good players play the characters they want. Like at 1:48, I was just watching the torb and thinking, "He's having the time of his life." What a wonderful comp

I love CW, I always said the trick to stop GOATS was Mei/Torb's area control. I love seeing them test it out.
I liked the ending where you tied how their original team name was Goats which this comp is intended to counter a comp they created.
Gideon Macapagal: no, akshon meant that there was a previous team called goats that also tore up the open division with a new comp. Akshon is suggesting that Clockwork could be revolutionary like goats was.
Secondly, Clockwork and Goats are two completely separate organizations/teams with completely different rosters and management. They are unrelated. Goats did not make Clockwork and they have no affiliation.

I got to say, it was very enjoyable watching those highlights at the beginning. You can tell not only the casters enjoy what they’re doing, but also that the teams aren’t so popular to where the games are more entertaining

I like teams who break out of the mold that is meta. Meta is just an option because it’s the most favorable in the current state of the game, but some people are just so good at what they play, so they totally own it.
I was waiting a while for this video! There is such little info about Clockwork Vendetta on TH-cam, and now because of this, this will increase their popularity by a lot, as well as the tier 2 & 3 scenes in general.
If more interesting builds/strategies pop up in the Tier 2 scene we'd love to make more videos like this covering them.

They couldn't. It only works because these one tricks have a unique synergy that no team could play their comp nearly as good.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Vendetta are like the Hungrybox's Jigglypuff of Overwatch.
You don't like the matchup, it doesn't "feel" like an Overwatch match but the Vendetta/Jigglypuff always plays a certain playstyle and forces the opponent's hands to play their game and tempo, and make a mistake
Vendettapuff is an interesting comparison! Especially the note on having control of tempo, as both hope the enemy will play into them, resulting in mistakes.

The plot twist of them being goats before the name change? God, my heart-
I've been a Torb main for a long time. Those matches which I had a Rissa and Mei, always seemed to go better. Mei is sustain, Orissa synergy with torb turret, and disrupt with suck. Hog is just basically damage, which is why Doomfist works just as well.

Clockwork Comp isn't something you should try at home. It's a high sustained damage build that needs everyone to know what they're doing (something near impossible on the ladder)
You are right synergy is something complete different to just teamplay. And synergy is needed for this comp

Nowadays this is a completely meta comp
This is why one-tricks are healthy for the game. They know their hero inside and out, can typically counter their counters, and can teach the community new strats to use with the heroes that they specialize on. If the OW educational community was based off of people specializing on specific heroes then we would know more about how to use them than any pros that just have good mechanical aim could ever teach. Learn how to think and react the way the hero you're playing would in any situation..don't just rely on building good mechanical aim because then we end up with BS metas where nobody knows how to be creative, but rather they just point and click using the easiest heroes to play at the time. Meta only players are literally using easy mode.
I hope chengdu hunters have been practicing this comp during the breaks. This will hype up the owl fans a lot

Looks like a team that is based in a high area control, as you said, then purely just defensive control like a bastion bunker. And with how eternal only got snowballed by rcky going for a flank. So they will probably have a huge weakness to any comp that isn't grouped up or stays in place. It's would be good against goats and bunker for how slow or stationary they can be but double sniper pharah or the quad dps Hammond build would most likely beat this team at the highest level. Rouge strat at best but I would love to see a rotating meta kinda like rock/paper/scissors we saw before bit not all be variations of a single comp.
