Agree. Pay for the full coverage. Rented a car in Chetumal and drove up to Vallodolid to see Chichen Itza and cenotes. Was smooth at National for me

Thank you. Planning on going. Did u drive to the other near by cities? (Cancun tulum or valladolid) was it pretty easy to find parking? About how much was parking?

Bring coins Tulum parking is a nightmare on the beach strip. In town it's not so bad. But the pay machines in Playa do not take foreign credit cards.

Parking is cheap in the city but expensive in Tulum on the beach

Is it better to rent a car in cancun and drive to chiapas or fly to tuxtla and rent a car there?

If you stay at a good hotel in the Chiapas, they usually have a great driver who is available to you. They will know the best routes, easy access to the other Townships, and will be a great guide to you. In that way, would be better value than just renting a car and being on your own. (Unless you feel very comfortable on your own in Mexico). Would advise to contact your hotel first. If airbnbing, fly into Tuxla and get a car. They are incredibly nice and helpful in the Chiapas. Not tourist Mexico.

Not all places, but some. To avoid any trouble, just get out of the car and tell them exactly how much to fill up, get the price and make sure they start with a 0 balance on the meter. when you hand them the money, open it up and show them that you are giving them the exact amount. That way they can't come back and say you didn't pay enough (having pocketed some of the money). Having said all this, most places are honest and have hard working people so please feel free to tip them.
