Dan the Automator Gorillaz Deltron 3030 Dr. Octagon Kid Koala Kool Keith Studio TOUR

  • In the world of underground hip-hop, Dan the Automator is second to none. Between his work on Dr. Octagon’s groundbreaking Dr. Octagonecologyst and his collaborations with Gorillaz, Prince Paul, Mike Patton, Kool Keith, and Kid Koala, the Automator keeps things fresh on the production side of the game, no doubt.
We visited the Automator’s San Francisco studio to watch the master at work doing what he does best - make sick beats. When we arrived, he was hard at work on a blown-out track using the Hoof Reaper and Fuzz Master General to add character to the stock sounds in a vintage Roland CR-78 drum machine. “That thing [the Hoof Reaper] blows out the kicks, basically, and that’s what makes it really exciting,” he says. “This brings a whole different dimension to the whole thing.”

Mellotron and Pianosaurus were the highlights for me. Old school meets preschool.

Deltron 3030 is an amazing album, so much talent in the bars and production. Automator and Del killed it. I had that album on repeat for like a year!

I can't even wrap my head around how many synths he has. You foreal just gonna nonchalantly say you got a Memorymoog, Dan?

Saw the picture in the net. Richard D James is sleeping on a deck within decks
surrounded by all possible kind of electrotechnical sound
engineering stuff connected by miles of Chords

I was doing sound for a rave off Army in SF about ten years ago, just finished getting everything connected, and I'm bumping Handsome Boy Modeling School as a soundcheck to make sure the bass is right. This guy I don't know is walking around the empty space is on a cell phone, and he starts laughing his ass off. Hands me the phone and says "say hello!", and it takes me about 30 seconds to realize Dan the Automator is on the other side of the call. Funny coincidence!

Great point about getting too polished with either instrument proficiency or recording can make things kind of robotic. I like the "pleasant mistakes" premise he's espousing.

Head down to Daly City and grab Qbert and let’s peel a few more layers of this onion. Plus yeah, everyone’s said everything about Dan, I *still* can’t get over how he just says what he does and makes it sound like it’s just another thing, you know, a day in the life. Sweet!

3030 and Octagon were groundbreaking and phenomenal. Timeless classics. Not sure which joints he did with the Gorillaz, but they're magic as well.

This series is great, I get a little nervous when I see these basement studio setups. Automator and Kurt Ballou both have sewer pipes running through these rooms with tons of amazing gear. All I can think about is pipes breaking and ruining it.

Dan made so many of my favourite albums.. gorillaz debut, HBMS, Dr Octagon.. he's a great producer, great remixer too. his solo cuts from late 80s are pretty cool too. its interesting in his production too, as they is always a callback to his previous works, such as using Mantronix samples (obviously a huge influence on dan throughout his career) or being a legit Chris Elliot fan.

You have to ask yourself, did this place exist when that record came out?
He recorded it on an mpc. It may have been mix/mastered elsewhere, but it was done on an mpc and I doubt that it was in that room.

    • @ViewbobTrue

As far as I know it was recorded in the first incarnation of the Glue Factory, a makeshift studio in Automator's basement. Spiritually the same studio, but not the same physical room

I've watched a ton of this series today and noticed everyone played around with odd tones, but hardly any of those artists actually use them recordings. Still a lot of presets and boring over-used tones on records they produce when money is on the line. Whatevs.
