I stopped buying Christmas presents 4 years ago and told everyone I don't need nor expect anything. I truly want to spend time together instead... PRESENCE instead of presents. It's wonderful!

Excellent video Bob, you have a great way of getting the point across. I thought I really understood the way things work because I have been seeking happiness for half a century and thought I understood how it all works. This video turned on a couple more lights for me and I thank you for it. I have known for quite some time that WE are a product of OUR ENVIRONMENT and I have proven that many times in my life so I know that well. I have been working on changing my environment for many years because I want to change the product (myself). I'll tell you something you already know but it takes time and it is a great journey. Every time a new light turns on it just blows my mind. I find it so hard to believe it took so long for me to understand. Once you get it, you get it and it's soooooooooo simple. Getting past all those years of brain washing is difficult but not impossible. Thank you again Bob, you are a fantastic voice for FREEDOM! Hope to meet you all at the RTR this year (finally)! Have a great day!

Thank you Bob for this video! I am the black sheep of my family for many reasons. I have always enjoyed buying second hand or receiving any hand-me downs. I'm happiest when I can reuse an item that others would find out of style. I feel consumerism is out of control. I don't need the newest and greatest. I have a wonderful job and love what I do but one day I would like to live a more simple life. I did not have a good childhood so I do have a few fears. I also have let go of expectations of others and just work on myself. Your videos have really helped me see how a simple life can bring so much happiness. Thank you for all you do!

    Love your videos Bob.
As a Christian don't let the expectations of giftgiving hamper the joy of the season.
Now we have options of going online and never having to visit a store if that's your choice.
Some of the best gifts I've ever received has come from the heart and not the wallet.
Keep pumping out those great videos Bob you've been a great inspiration.
My favorites are when you interview individuals and how they share their own stories

You got that right, Bob- 100%. If you learn about most of the indigenous peoples all over the world, who live simply and communally...you will find the most giving, kind, happy and spiritually peaceful people in the world. They are secure and connected to the Earth (who I feel is out mother). This is why I am going Nomadic.

Bob,I am a Christian and I celebrate Christmas, but my family and I have gotten away from the "buying" part of it. It's more about getting together with family and friends and celebrating the birth of Jesus. I refuse to buy into the commercialism of having to "buy things" for family members as we used to do growing up and by doing that it has relieved a lot of stress around this time of year.... that said, Merry Christmas Bob and keep up the good videos. I totally agree with you. Less "things" in your life is better and healthier for you.

This was an excellent video. I have known that material things will not bring me happiness, for a long time. I am surrounded by friends who enjoy buying new furniture, etc. I am happy for them, but I don't need to do the same, I am happy with what I have right now. I feel rich all the time, surrounded by family, my dog, my cat, that I don't need to seek happiness from stuff.

I no longer "celebrate" Christmas and didn't buy one gift...because "I give all year long"...and the gift I received was a photo from my x-roommate's new home/food forest...a photo of a green frog to be exact...recycled frames...and I LOVED IT!!!! I loved it because he discovered the richness of Mother Nature while living here, with my food forest....and watching me turn into an 8 year old every time I played in my forest...and now this big burly he-man is captivated by Mother Nature himself...shows like yours influenced me years ago to bug-out of the tinsel town lifestyle I was living in this affluent NC banking center...yes, I was a banker with the big pension and promises for my obedience....now, pursuing simplicity...growing my own food, debt free, not buying items containing or packaged in petro, and unwinding my addictions to genocide foods, creams, and chemicals...for example...check this out...what the heck are we even eating these days???? th-cam.com/video/I5UwoqSpAJc/w-d-xo.html

Good morning Bob, it's not quite Christmas here but it's Happy Halloween here. And my birthday is just 2 days away. My fiance always asks what I want for my birthday, I always say let's go out to eat Chinese food and buy a mocha latte. My 9 year old son bought me a Beta fish. I have my home and my family. I'm happy with what I have. I have dreams and hopes but I'm content with less gifts. Love your message.

The people who think pooping in a bucket probably never experienced a hurricane or tornado or homelessness. The crash in 08 left people who were once well off devastated, they were living in closets, small office spaces, coucj surfing. Many people poop in buckets in the woods where main stream society can't see them.
I personally know people who have this s--tty attitude, if the shtf they would be clueless as to how to survive. I am thankful I have had experiences as a child that taught me many survival skills.
Thanks Bob for keeping it REAL.

EXCELLENT video Bob and I can't agree more!! I also think people often don't realize WHY they are trying to get MORE. And, sometimes people trying to get more is simply due to HABIT. We are so used to just acquiring things that it becomes an unconscious habit. I am so glad I woke up to this habit a couple of years ago and I am working to downsize and replace my old bad habit of acquiring things with new good habits. Have a happy holiday Bob!

Thanks Ray. Yes, the bucket was mostly metaphorical about an attitude that says "There can be no change in my life, it MUST STAY EXACTLY THE SAME" It's that attitude that locks us in misery.

Bob, you are so correct .. I feel no pressure at all to get caught up in the madness ... a few gift cards for the grands and I'm done ... LOL ... enjoy your happiness during this season and for many years to come!

I disagree that Christmas is a bad thing. I think the problem certainly can be in expectations, and in lack of self control, not being able to slow down, peer pressure. But I do become childlike at Christmas, enjoying the lights, enjoying getting a gift for my loved ones, however small. Even if it's just a card I like the excuse to show them how much I care about them. And I enjoy the Christmas spirit of people out shopping or wherever; they are friendly and happy and I like that. So I think it is what you do and what you focus on, not the holiday itself. Keeping it simple does add to the experience. It adds to the experience of life!

The Buddhists teach that attachment is the issue. We are attached - lustful desire - for things or situations or experiences. Calm detachment is their philosophy. I might have that slightly wrong, but mostly right I think.

Sprigg had a post office for about 100 years, but it had to be taken out. (believe me--it was for the best), Williamson handles our mail so we use it's zip code. Everyone concerned has been really good to us over this. we live about 6 miles from Williamson, our county seat, in Hatfield & McCoy country.

Well said on teaching kids on joy. My girls, played with what is around.they are grown. and make what they want. Now, as uncle Wayne, kids just come to me just showing them what the bugs are doing, or to.kick a ball around. Then go back to grandma and beg for toys and games card. I set that straight.just by example.

True embracing of the Christmas spirit, on the road and making do with a stable! Yep shake off and out our subsequent expectations. I freed myself of Christmas laden with gifts and expectations and gave all those that expected I pay for the food and cook and wash up after an extended family of over 20, with no help, some years back with the gift of my mum's Christmas recipes all documented and simply said, it's now up to you. Go forth and do what you will, but I would rather be alone than enslaved to a kitchen for at least 24 hours with little thanks or appreciation and expected to buy gifts as well. My mum may have enjoyed doing this, but I sure as hell didn't. Freedom to choose and define life for yourself is the path to happiness. I must say though, as a child I loved my Barbies and Lego and was pretty attached to my teddy!

    @treysuniverserv1576 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Much of what you say is very true. I do take some exceptions with the idea that items of comfort will stand in the way of happiness. I can be extremely happy having a toilet that flushes and flushing my Black tank every two weeks. I don't need to revert back to using an outhouse like I had to in my youth to be happy. While you used the Native American example of having possession was something they shunned is not completely true. Having things that did not enhance life were worthless to them but having more than one horse was good, having many horses to them was better. It enhanced the way the could travel, it enhanced the way the could hunt and they could use their horses to obtain other items through trade that made the Nomadic life easier. That can be the same way in our Nomadic life today. Just as you choose to live in a newer van instead of a tent and use a bucket instead for digging a hole. One can be find happiness through conveniences that a Class C or another type of RV Offers. Greed is evil but there is no evil having those temporal items that gives an individual comfort that enhances their Nomadic life. Each of us has a limit to how far they should go to live the Nomadic lifestyle. Working and waiting to reach that minimum gives a much better chance of success That minimum is different for each person or couple that takes up this life. We must be honest with ourselves for if we lie to ourselves and just to get out there, misery and failure could be what we meet. I like your videos because they make me think! I do agree with much more than I disagree with. Please know that I am very grateful for the efforts you put forth, your are a great help to many including myself.

ly intelligent and I really agree wish I could own a piece of property in the mountains and live free but in our society you really never own land you just lease it until you can't pay the taxes and they take it. How is that ownership in the true sense of the word. And I do agree with Christmas and hope to see you soon.

bob, i have been living that way without really realizing it...after a divorce and loss of a son, 10 years ago i had moved onto a old boat (living space of 200 sq, ft) it unfortunately it sank (hitting a deadhead) and moved into a 160 sq. ft. of rv trailer and never thought of it as a minimalist life style, it's just what i did !!!
i live so cheap, my pension covers everything i 'need' , my rent space is $200 monthly (on a river and 1 mile from the ocean in a farm area in the country) and my truck and canopy is set up for camping, so i believe i'm really free and i'm happy !!!

But my bro is deeply depressed, overwhelmed by money issues as he doesn't earn enough... I hate to see it... I lost everything twice, and it hurt like hell but actually it's helped me get a real grip on life... What's really important!!!

But Bob, it's not a bucket. It's a chamber pot and that Is acceptable as well as being historically minded. See, if you write Chamber Pot at the bottom edge of the bucket it changes what the bucket is. I can imagine that would even cause smiles in the RV community. It would make me smile, I like cheeky little things like that. : )

Craig Cottingham o my gosh my ex has a old Toyota land cruiser. one in million can't even find parts for it. he has been offered big bucks for it, but he would rather go a bit hungry or stay a bit colder if Thats what it takes to not sell it. That thing was one of the reasons I fell for him. learned to drive stick shift in it. I miss it more than him. I don't know how old it is but I know it is older than the 80s. probly a 70s model.

Expectations are not just materialistic - but with family too... That is where I have had my biggest let downs, wanting to be wanted or needed and not having that - Your video is so true about letting go of expectations. I need to start saying: I am happy today and let go of my expectations of expecting other people to make me happy - wonderful philosophy!

    • @CheapRVliving
      @CheapRVliving  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

You are very right. In fact, if you do a google search on expectations, most of it is focused on relationships where it is especially unhealthy and hurtful. But I needed to stay on a narrow focus here. Hopefully, there was something here you could use on relationship expectations as well.

You did a great job Bob, expectation is a deep subject that permeates every aspect of life. I was taught long ago that every situation in my life that i (or anyone else) was not satisfied with, came down to three things; expectation, perception, and judgment (with judgment being a two sided coin of condemnation and discernment). The older I get, the more obvious that truth becomes.

Was just out at Wal Mart helping my gf get what little she could for her kids, her nor I believe in the huge machine it has become. The crowds are insane, extremely rude and annoying most having sub human manners...we both have PTSD and the crowds just kill us in several ways, anxiety goes through the roof. But I can agree with you on the insanity of all the materialism, I believe in simplicity and calmness and strait thinking in life. I feel like an alien and I do not belong to the masses they drive me nuts, call me anti social but I have my reasons and there good enough for me to avoid much of it...I seek a simple life outside the box, I don't care for most of the bs ppl THINK is important these day's...and is one of the reasons I am wanting an rv and when I discovered this lifestyle...I instantly became attracted to it.

christians are leaving traditions after finding out their pagan roots. you're right, it's all about expectatations...it's harder when you have kids or a large family. But unrealistic expectations have been high because of TV Land too. The older I get the more I am enjoying minimalism.

I found out the 'Truth Of The Gospel' 4 years ago and walked away from the traditions of men and the cultural pagan belief system we are taught. Christmas is not Jesus's birthday for starts, he was more likely born during the fall time, likely during The Feast of Tabernacle's (Sukkot) due to the shephard boy grazing sheep, well December would be in winter and would not be grazing anything in dead of winter, it's amazing to me I didn't figure that out till I was in my 50's..lol. Oh well I know now. So Bob is exactly on point here. Christmas is a burden as well. Buy.. Buy... Buy.. Excellent video, We are planning our escape to the Cheaprvliving, Bob you are right on target here.

Paul states I have found to be content in what ever state I'm in. contentment is not a societal norm . that's why each year black Friday and the #1 gift of the year get more and more outrageous . take away all that and live content and things loose there power. to many things become gods for many coasting us time money efforts and happiness. trying to protect stuff that decay and rot and are temporary emotional fixes leaving us empty expecting more.

No apologies needed. Loved watching this. Walking outside the lines of "normal" makes society nervous. Sometimes I wonder if they look at the nomad life and realize these people are happy and for the most part have chosen this life and it scares them. Some people live in their boxes and are happy, more power to them if so. A lot of people are not but will not break the "rules" to try something different. Thank you for 2016 and your videos. See you at the RTR 2017 in January. Looking forward to seeing & meeting the tribe.

I absolutely love this video! Especially when Bob emphasizes that we have to pay for the house that the toilet is in! "Break the rules!" My Grandsons live 2 hours away in a BIG modern house! When they spent the night in "CraZyGraNnies" tent, got to dig their own poop holes and pee wherever(away from the cactus!), they didn't want to leave. They loved my lifestyle. "Be childlike".
