I feel like I am the third option. I like the pink hues, even if its a happy accident. Yes it shouldn't happen again, but at least we still have Sailor Moon even in its pink hue. It's iconic and I actually feel like it makes the anime even better.
Its certainly not the worst color it could have degraded to. Pink suits it. Had it degraded into green like dragonball, it would not have worked out so well.
Speaking as an anime fan and a Disney fan, this reminds me of the situation with the animated 1950 Cinderella's digital restoration. When Disney had Cinderella digitally remastered by Lowry Digital in the mid 2000s, the colors were altered from the original film, and even delicate details were scrubbed off. This is most notable during the ballgown transformation, where some sparkles were erased; also, Cinderella's dress looks more blue in this version too, probably to reflect how Disney markets her. They thought the original silver dress looked too much like a wedding dress for the Disney Princess franchise. The restoration errors made people believe that Cinderella's dress was blue and not silver, since the colors were very different from the original film. It got to the point where the 1988 VHS tape had more accurate colors than the blu-ray release! This error didn't get corrected until last year, when a bunch of animators began to produce a 4K UHD of the movie based on the 1950 release, and the original colors are available once more to see. Lowry Digital, the company that did the remasters, didn't do so well on many of the classic Disney movies, and I hope more of the classics can get proper releases with colors and aspect ratios that were like the original theatrical releases. This doesn't include the 90s films, because most have 4K releases already. So far, they've only done Cinderella and Snow White in the 4K format, but maybe more will happen in the future! I'd love to see a 4k Sleeping Beauty or Bambi. Anyway, excellent video, and I love talking about film restoration processes and how animation was made before computers! I appreciated the historical contexts and information. It really goes to show how a little mistake can change people's perception of a movie or TV show.
Beautifully stated. I always felt strongly about how Disney altering the original coloration of Cinderella was just a botched job. I guess that people who grew up with it prefer it, like with the Sailor Moon pink hue... but give me the color quality and line depth as close as possible to what was the originally intended film quality. It bothers me that people say that it's better than the original quality just because it's what was left to work with when in these cases, I simply don't think it's the case.
@ I actually grew up with the 2005 botched DVD release, and I didn't realize until I got older how different it looked from the original release. I'm definitely a purist when it comes to films and things like this; I prefer things to be presented in their original, intended form as closely as possible. I despise when things are edited and censored. Maybe that makes me a prude, but when it comes to history and historical context, it's important that the original version is available for people to view.
I felt the same way learning that Ken Sugimori’s original watercolor Pokemon art was poorly scanned and the intended colors were way different. I can’t help but love the “mistake” versions of that and pink sailor moon 😅
This is, ironically, a severe case of the Mandela Effect. I actually managed to find original Toonami promos and I can confirm that there was no pink tint. The pink actually came from later DVD releases, which were sourced from the positive that you talked about.
The thing is, not all of sailor moon has a pink hue, a lot of episodes and other seasons have different hues. Season 4 is covered with a thick nasty green hue
The fact that the vomit green hue is also present in Dragon Ball Z Kai the Final Chapters really shows how little Toei cares about visual quality as it loooked awful there
Rather you prefer the original look or the pink tint is up to you, but I think it is important to inform viewers that the pink hue is not intentional and it is also very important to allow us to choose - I think we should preserve the pink version, but just as well restore and preserve the original look of the show, for preservation and to allow people to choose according to their preference. Personally, I don't mind either way, I wouldn't notice unless you put them side by side. But I am concerned about preserving the original version of the show and how it looked.
Agree 100000% to thiiiis. Keep both versions preserved and archived. Also I think they can capitalize on releasing a pink version, 'cuase we as fans will support and buy anything they release. So we'll have the original color version and the pink hue version >.
This 100%. I think that as Sailor Moon fans we kind of are used to getting the short end of the stick when it comes to releases. It's unfortunate that the Viz media release is kind of sloppy. Yeah, we kind of have that or nothing, but for a beloved franchise couldn't they put in as much effort into restoring it as possible? Isn't it deserving of that?
No, we shouldnt choose. What Toei should do is work in a proper remaster in HD with colo correction instead of keep using those awful masters cause all the promo art doesnt have the pink tint and some people even look green.
@@joaquincastaneda6695 i mean Toei deff need to respect the originals, I was just saying that some people prefer the pink tint and it would be nice if they let them choose the way they want to see it. But preservation and accurate digitaization should be priority with the masters.
Honestly, I'm quite torn on it... The colour-corrected versions look more visually pleasing in *almost* every way, *but* I think the pink hue actually helps the skin tones feel more natural. That's just my view though.
I saw your post on Reddit about this yesterday and I finally had the time to watch it lol. But I loved the video! I appreciated how you went into the technical side as to why the film turned out with this tint. It's pretty lucky we got a nice pink tint instead of the orange sepia tinge like some other digitized films got lol. The way I originally watched Sailor Moon was through the DiC dubs on VHS, and it had the intended color shades, since it was before the film was digitized. When I rewatched the show's Viz dub in 2012 on Hulu, I was offput by the pink coloring. I fired up my old VCR to see if I was just remembering the coloring of the show wrong, but it turns out I wasn't lol. I went to some *totally legit* anime websites and I checked out the subbed version. It was the old, 480p, yellow subtitled version and the colors were like I remembered from the DiC VHS tapes. I checked out an HD, color coded subtitled version, and it had the pink tint too. I eventually did some research and found out why the HD versions of Sailor Moon had this pink tint. Also, the R, S, and SuperS movies were digitized better, so they have the original colors to them. Same thing with the R and SuperS specials, including Ami's First Love. Since I watched Sailor Moon before the birth of the pink tint, I'll always remember Sailor Moon with the original film colors. I don't dislike the pink tint, but I'll always prefer it without it. The pink tint works way better with Classic and R since the backgrounds and buildings are typically pastel with very few colors and details. The pink adds some more life and color to those backgrounds. S, Supers, and Stars had way bigger budgets, which mean more details in the backgrounds. None of the backgrounds look like simplistic pastel sketches with one color, now they're as detailed as the characters most times. The details and colors are more vibrant and pop more, so a pink tint makes it look too busy and fogs up all the colors. It's the Color Theory aspect of it that bugs me and not so much about it being "a mistake" or "colored wrong"
People make this such a bigger deal than it is. I grew up watching the original master in the 90's but the Viz release looks fine to me, the only moments where the coloring is a problem for me is with the recycled animations for the transformations and attacks during the first season, for some reason they stock animation always looks worse than the actual episodes besides the first time the transformations or attacks are used
I like the pink hue, but I would watch the anime again with the true intended colours. Also, the film should be digitalized at the best quality possible while pink, and again but with the restoration. It's like, it would be pretty fresh to watch it again with its true colours
I don't like the pink hue AT ALL. What bothers me most is that the degradation varies from episode to episode, making some episodes horrible for the eyes (Sailor Moon's hair is not orange). And in other episodes, degradation turns everything greenish or bluish, masking the original vibrant colors. I like Sailor Moon with its truly vivid colors.
You... kinda stretched it. Pink pastel vibe was present in Shoujo Anime since 80's with shows like Creamy Mami. And the anime you shown do not have pink hue - they have pink color for protagonists.. I don't mind Happy Little Accidents, because each person has it's own preference... but corrupting information with false assumptions stated as factual is something that makes my blood boil. I totally respect "I personally like this accidental versions". But i hate when people claim it as superior. Especially... when this "happy little accident" was committed not by original artists, but by something they had nothing to do with.
I think you mixing two things, the pink aesthehic in specific elements or scenes and a marenta color cast over the entire image all the time, all of those shows you mention like, Cardcaptor Sakura, Madoka, Tokyo Mew Mew nonse of them have the margenta hue, the skin tones look balanced and the whites look actually white. I think the people who released it with the margenta cast made an embarrassing mistake, is something that can be corrected with a simple curve. I think if i were spending my money buying DVDs or blurays and get this pink mess I would be very disappointed same with any other anime, like dragon ball which have the same issue.
Fans: "I don't care if it's a mistake. I love the pink hues." Preservationists: "It shouldn't be celebrated. Artifacts of culture should be preserved just as the artists intended." Why not both?
I grew up with Sailor Moon, and I remember finding out from the internet that the colour of the merchandise was how you could tell if it was a knockoff. The pink stuff was the knockoff, the real merchandise had the true colours.
Maybe that's why Sailor Moon season 4 and 5 look more appealing to me... they don't have pink hue. Pink Hue is associated with primitive Seasons 1 and 2 i guess, while Season 3 is in-between with awesome plot and art. While Season 4 is Peak Sailor Moon for me.
I'm surprised such an iconic feature of the show was an accident! I very much enjoy the 'filtered' look of the animation. It adds a certain charm to the visual element. Many beloved things were the products of accidents. Embrace mistakes.
As an aesthetic, sure it's not bad, but I don't like that the quality is deteriorated from what the artists gave us since I prefer a crisper image where on things like the white of the uniforms you can see the linework of the art better. What bugged me was the backlash from people who got outraged when fans posted the de-pinked version. I get the appeal from a "I kinda like the flaws" perspective, but I want the vibrancy of the original to be celebrated too. (the fanbase in general has a bit of tone issues when it comes to some opinions, so anything kind of riles up a response) But at the same time it almost feels like the fanbase is being encouraged to just settle for lower effort releases because we had a poorly scripted original dub and then a drought of content in the 2000s. Just cause what Viz provides is better than what we were getting in the 90s doesn't mean that we deserve something that isn't as accurate as possible to the scripts and artwork quality of the original releases. I think the fans deserve it. I'm kind of annoyed with how Sailor Moon is such a phenomena but the people in charge kind of just go "they'll just have to accept it."
I think this trivial thing blew way out of proportion lol. At this point there are trolls around twitter making rage bait, magenta overlay edits of recent official images and calling them romantic (I probably have a weird sense of humor as I always find them hysterical). In my honest opinion, we should have a neutral stance. From the cultural impact standpoint, a preservation mistake made the series iconic. From a historical standpoint, having the series reverted back to its original colors makes the series go back to its roots, and gives us another reason to experience it all over again with a clear mind and no thoughts of "there is no pink, this feels wrong". The middle ground and the opportunity for an all over re-experience is already there, we probably are collectively too defensive of the show we grew up in to realize it.
Question: The laserdisc and VHS versions of Sailor Moon do not have this "pink tint" as far as I know. So why not digitize those versions of the series, and then remaster them to a "proper" HD version. Those versions, including the DIC dub, are still out there, however rare.
Ehh....you lost me entirely on that "the color degradation has influenced other anime" section. That's a real stretch. For one, none of the shows you showcased actually have pink hues, they just incorporate pink into their color palette (something Sailor Moon without the film rot does, particularly in its backgrounds). Pastel colors and dreamlike visuals aren't really a Sailor Moon thing either. Plenty of shoujo that predate it had similar aesthetics. Just look at any of Pierrot's magical girl shows from the '80s, like Creamy Mami. The pink (and green) hues of Sailor Moon's rotted film masters also weren't really a thing prior to this decade. ADV's early 2000s DVD sets of the DiC/Cloverway dub were largely absent of the issues that have plagued post-2014 releases.
If you didnt know if you wanted to look into what sailor moon originally looked like theres the Sailor moon R movie 15-minute short "Make Up! Sailor Guardians"
So, this only actually applies to the DVD releases. The tape releases were created before the degradation, and so while the color is poor because it's tape, the color grading is true to the original intent. Where this starts to get interesting is that part of Sailor Moon's history is that it was at the forefront of driving the fansub community - the massive flood of piracy that showed to corporations that there was money to be made in translating content between countries. Where it gets even more interesting is that people felt the need to preserve the fansubs. This means that if you look up somebody like VKLL on the internet archive you can find the series in a way that's afflicted with a completely different kind of degradation. The most interesting thing to me is that since these are two different kinds of degradation with little overlap it's actually quite possible to use one to correct the other, allowing for an accurate reconstruction. While that's certainly not unheard of in media restoration, it's still pretty uncommon. Doubly for such a large series to have such excellent coverage.
IMO the remastered version goes too far. I think the ribbons of Sailor Moon shoud stay pinkish as they always were, because even in pink-hue version Sailor Mars uniform is always intensve red. But after remastering process the ribbons of Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars uniform are equally red. So I think the whole process shold affect only some of the light and susceptible tones like whites. Even the original Naoko's covers and other arts show clearly distinguished color tones between Sailor Moon (pink~red) and Sailor Mars (red).
I always viewed pink hue as cringe, and it kinda is not pleasant for my eyes (I prefer blue hue honestly, for more heavenly vibes, or yellow/orange hue for sunny vibes.) When i was younger, pink hue gave me "Ew, girly cartoon!" vibe. I prefer more vivid colors. I don't care which one is correct, which one is a mistake. ...also, my userpic has pink hair, not a pink hue. It's different.
You forgot mentioning Europe , Italy , I am in Italy and I grew up in Italy . in Italy , sailor moon started airing in 1995, And the manga started to be published 1995 of the same year It is in wiki Italy Salilor moon made a big impact on Italy too , toys , merchandise , italian original songs dedicated to sailor moon . And sailor moon’s revival started in Italy in 2010s , let’s not forget it and not ignore it !!!!
it was popular in Germany too. If you check how many dubs were made, I think it is safe to say it was a global phenomenon so forgetting to mention a couple countries is okay.
@dorimi3131 , I understand , it just it started to be bothering after a while , forgetting is fine , though when it becomes US and Japan ( i see it too often, it feels too self centric talk ) , and someone is like " oh , was is popular there too " when it shouldn't be surprising when a series is that popular or "oh , you know this obscure series too" when isn't obscure in other countries ...
I think there might be a misunderstanding-the intention wasn’t to suggest that the pink hue is the sole reason for Sailor Moon’s influence. Rather, the goal was to explore how film preservation-or the lack thereof-has influenced certain aesthetic choices, like the pink tint that has become emblematic in more recent renditions. This is just one aspect of what makes Sailor Moon so memorable and influential. There’s so much more to the series’ legacy!
Your comment is misguided. She explained that for people who discovered Sailor Moon in the 2000s, the pink hue gave Sailor Moon a uniquely dreamy and iconic aesthetic.
@@sailorbloodmo0n Except where is the pink hue in the examples you mentioned? And why are you so SURE that it was Pink Hue that was the inspiration behind 00's Shoujo?
@@RachelRichards I discovered Sailor Moon in 2000's, and i don't remember any pink hue. I don't mind if people prefer Pink Hue... as long as they don't pretend to be superior, claming it as "Absolutely better", and... But the amount of boring pastel color stuff from 2010's made me kinda dislike pink hue.
I'm a pink hue truther girly, it looks wrong without it. The pink hue adds a natural warmth and glow. I don't like the idea that Usagi was meant to have cold tone yellow hair. The pink hue makes it deep gold yellow. No pink hue - not 90s Sailor Moon, in my opinion.
What you said reminded me of how people assume that Sailor Moon is the prime representative of 90's anime style... but it's as false as claiming that Attack on Titan is the embodiment of 2010's anime style, or that Naruto is embodiment of 00's Anime Style.
It's not just Sailor Moon. Many classic films have had releases with inaccurate colours, either due to the colours fading, or because of a badly done remaster. The Matrix was released with a heavy green tint, and The Godfather was released with a yellow tint. And newer releases corrected these mistakes, but a lot of people got upset over it, because they had grown accustomed to the tints. It's similiar to saying that you prefer to watch a show on VHS over Blu-ray, because you believe that the imperfections of a faded tape just add more atmosphere. Now, regardless of your preferences, I do think for film preservation's sake we always have to prioritise the film's original look. Sailor Moon and other anime deserve a faithful remaster with all the original colours. And after that, fans can always pick their preferred version, or make their own remasters with a nostalgic filter. Sadly, Toei Animation is not really interested in properly restoring their classic anime. A lot of times fans have to do that on their own. We've had some pretty impressive fan restorations of Dragon Ball.

@KeyleeTamirian Which is fair. I cant handle bright colors, so the pink hue actually is pleasing to me as everything is slightly calmer.

Absolutely excellent video. I watched Sailor Moon in the late 90s and early 2000s. Who didn't want to be a Sailor Guardian?
I feel like you repeated the same things with different words so many times to make the video longer😵💫
ADV's early 2000s DVD sets of the DiC/Cloverway dub were largely absent of the issues that have plagued post-2014 releases.
the creeper was a mistake too, now is the face of the game
I'm pretty sure the reason my favorite color is pink is because of Sailor Moon's pink hue. It blew my mind when I first learned this.
I have a WAY BIGGER problem with how most of Toei Animation's anime looked SO GOLD AND YELLOWED OUT by the time Stars Aired.
I literally never noticed the pink hue
If you didnt know if you wanted to look into what sailor moon originally looked like theres the Sailor moon R movie 15-minute short "Make Up! Sailor Guardians"
That's okay maybe her color was always going to be red for her dress and powers.
Doubly for such a large series to have such excellent coverage.
i never noticed there was a pink hue lmao
IMO the remastered version goes too far. I think the ribbons of Sailor Moon shoud stay pinkish as they always were, because even in pink-hue version Sailor Mars uniform is always intensve red. But after remastering process the ribbons of Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars uniform are equally red. So I think the whole process shold affect only some of the light and susceptible tones like whites. Even the original Naoko's covers and other arts show clearly distinguished color tones between Sailor Moon (pink~red) and Sailor Mars (red).
Best mistake ever made
I'm sub to you because I like your Named.
thank you for the sub! 🫶
Sorry but the pink version is so muvb prettier
Reminds me how the Dragon Ball Z DVD film aged to make everyone look like a peach.
Oh Toei. Figures. Lol
I thought Dragon Ball had a green hue.
I really love how you said the exact same thing like 5 times worded alightly differently
I always viewed pink hue as cringe, and it kinda is not pleasant for my eyes (I prefer blue hue honestly, for more heavenly vibes, or yellow/orange hue for sunny vibes.)
When i was younger, pink hue gave me "Ew, girly cartoon!" vibe. I prefer more vivid colors.
I don't care which one is correct, which one is a mistake.
...also, my userpic has pink hair, not a pink hue. It's different.
I don't like Sailor Moon, but I do think that the pink hue adds charm to the animation. I wonder what the creator thinks about it.
Kinda opposite, i love Sailor Moon, but i dislike Pink Hue. It gives cringy vibes.
You forgot mentioning Europe , Italy , I am in Italy and I grew up in Italy . in Italy , sailor moon started airing in 1995, And the manga started to be published 1995 of the same year
It is in wiki Italy
Salilor moon made a big impact on Italy too , toys , merchandise , italian original songs dedicated to sailor moon .
Why am I watching this as a boy
crazy eh
I love early animae and hentai from the 90s . Tank police and Captain Harloc . Vampire hunter D , Card Capture Sakura and more. ❤❤❤
This video is so misguided and misplaces way too much credit of Sailor Moon's influence to a pink hue that only became a thing in more recent times.
