- Blade 120 SR Helicopter - Absolute Beginner Flight Lesson!
This video is a review and unbox of the Blade 120 SR helicopter, to include an absolute beginner flight lesson. The absolute beginner is me, as I have never flown a four channel tail rotor helicopter until now. But I got it done!
Chapters are included in the video, just use the timeline.
The Blade 120 SR came out around 2011 and is not longer in production. A viewer, John H, kindly sent me this helo for a video.
The video will go over a brief history of radio control model helicopters, to include the Dubro Whirlybird 505 from 1972. I will then perform a quick unbox of the Blade 120 SR helicopter, followed by a detailed discussion of this ready to fly gem.
The Blade RC helo manual is discussed as well as particulars of the transmitter. The Blade 120 SR is a micro ready to fly (RTF) helicopter. Simply charge the battery and go fly, there is nothing to build or assembe.
Finally, I will have a detailed lesson on how to fly the helicopter and some considerations for a successful flight.

Great video Tim! Looks like you are ready for a flybarless collective pitch heli!
Thanks John. 😊😳 Tim
wish all videos were as good as yours. Good job. Thank you for the input to help get started.
I appreciate that!
So good info! thank you sir!
Glad it was helpful!
Tim, thank you for this video. I bought this 120S2 today and have full confidence that you will teach me all I need to know. Here goes! :-)
Good luck! Tim
I had this one in the recent past and it's cool for what it is. The limitation is mainly the flybar. It acts like a coaxial helicopter, so when you try to go into forward flight it is always trying to stop and self stabilize. Even if you just want to hover around, it has the dreaded "toilet bowl effect" if the pivots, linkages, and blades are not perfect ( which they never are) this is where in a hover it starts to circle by itself in bigger and bigger circles if left uncorrected (very irritating 😂). It is a challenge to fly smooth for all the wrong reasons. It can teach you to hover and basic orientation though which is great. I don't recommend trying to find an old one unless you get it for free or really cheap because the newer flybarless helies are worlds better, even as far as teaching since like this one they will also autolevel and teach orientation as well as allow you to fly in forward flight properly. Then if you get one where the autolevel can be turned off, then you can really learn how to fly a heli properly with no auto level.
Many thanks! Tim
Just found one on ebay for $28! It just needs a new tail rotor motor, ive only ever flown the mcx2, cant wait till it comes in!
Go for it!! Tim
This was my very first helicopter about 6 or 7 years ago. I didn't know anything about them, just wanted one and the hobby shop guy gave me this one. Tell you what, it took a freakin beating and just kept going!
I fell out of the hobby because pretty shortly after I got a Nano CPx and the thing was just too twitchy but the 120 wasn't as entertaining anymore. Getting back in it now with a sim and being able to utilize the sim is amazing. Crashing for free almost makes me want to just stick to the sim!
👍🏻😊 Tim
nice videos tim I hope you keep making them
Tom: Many thanks, just published a Sig Deperdussin video. 😊 Tim
Very interesting ! Yes, you have to get away from the '' down wash '''' of the main rotor....
Great point! Tim
Thats one hell of a copter!
👍🏻😊 Tim
They have a new flybarless Version that flys better and is one of the best for people looking to get into helicopters. I recently moved on to collective pitch helicopters with the blade 230s highly recommend for those looking into helicopters
Jordan: Fully agree. This model was sent to me by a viewer, decided to make a short video. Tim
@@TimMcKay56 the 120sr was my first helicopter as well, fun little bird. I thought i wouldn't be able to grasp helicopter controls but that little one made it easy for me now I enjoy flying them just as much as airplanes. 👍
👍🏻😊 Tim
IMO Biggest drawback with this was the radio. After you trim the heli and turn off the TX, it forgets the trim! Had a much better experience flying it once I moved to a DX8.
👍🏻😊 Tim
I have the same model Heli but in BNF that I fly with my DX9. The new version of this heli is now flybarless
Kevin: Thanks for the update! Tim

@@policerKJO Thanks! Tim
I left my battery in my helicopter now though. Receiver aint written the transmitter. What can I do to fix the problem? It's brand new. I put it back in the box and when I got it out. It wasn't written the transmitter.
Not sure . . . Tim
Astro Hogs helis? Did you mean Air Hogs? LOL
Yup, Air Hogs. 😳😊 Tim
