Excellent job putting all this together. I can't imagine the amount of time it took! That's funny you've seen the rattle snakes there. I've been going there since 2007 and have yet to see one. We've done a lot of hiking, camping, and runs rim-to-rim, so I'll toss out some additional suggestions. 1) As seen in the video, where light shoes, preferably something minimalist like Merrell Trail Gloves, or Vapor Gloves, or VivoBareFoot, or New Balance Minimus V1, or my personal favorite, Vibram FiveFingers. It's a million steps across the canyon, and doing it in ultra-light shoes that allow your toes and feet to move freely, will make the trip so much more enjoyable. I know it seems counter-intuitive to all the marketing about hiking boots, but trust me, you won't regret it. 2) Wear a full coverage sun hat, rather than a baseball style cap. Keeping the sun off your face and neck is a huge deal. Ball caps cover nothing, and your face and neck will just cook. 3) Wear a light colored, ventilated long sleeve shirt. Same principle as the sun hat. Keep the sun off your arms and shoulders. 4) Really take a look at the contents of your electrolyte drink mix powder, and don't even think about doing this on just straight water. You might even consider mixing or trading off between 2 different kinds of mix, and also adding to your mix. We use combinations of Liquid I.V., Genius Electrolyte, MRM Reload BCAA+G, and add magnesium pills broken apart, to what we mix (Check out what magnesium offers, health-wise). 5) Consider products like GU Roctane, with, and without caffeine, vitamin B complex, and 5hr energy drink. All can be great "tools" for making the trek outstanding. 6) The importance of training, can't be stressed enough. Treadmill/Elliptical/Stairmaster machines don't provide it, so don't kid yourself and think that's gonna work. Yes, they are better than nothing, but you need to get out, wearing all your gear, and actually log the miles. You won't regret it. I have a few vids on my channel of how we train, how we run it, and what we wear/carry.

My brother and I are planning to do rim to rim in May 2022. The hike will be over the course of two days (starting on the South Rim, hiking to Cottonwood Campground to spend the night, then hike the rest of the way to the North Rim). We're not planning on staying at Phantom Ranch, but is it possible to reserve meals there without actually staying the night there?

Yea I've seen rattlesnakes in October. As it gets colder they move further down the Canyon. All winter long they will be hiding down close to the river.

What happens if you have a medical emergency on the trail?
Prevention is always the mindset to go in with. Do all the research and talk to the park rangers before starting your hike. There are a few spots along some of these trails with hard-wired emergency phones. Indian Garden has a ranger station, Phantom Ranch has a ranger station, and there's one on the way up the North Side. If there is worry of medical emergency I'd hire a good guide. Sometimes you could be having an emergency along these trails and it could be hours before someone else could even pass you, and then the time for them to got get help...

Just gotta say this again: "SLOW DOWN!" If at all possible, try to secure an itinerary that lets you stop overnight at each campground. There is so very much to see. Despite its length, "this is not a marathon."
I would also add that "this is not a 'bucket list.'" You will be back ... again and again and again. (For us, more than twenty times and counting. It never grows old.)
My wife and I would usually make our excursions either in April, when we no longer had to worry about ice on the upper trails, or October, in fact around Halloween. (Yes, we memorized ALL the "ghost stories.") Rim-to-Rim was one option, but we also went down South Kaibab, then stayed overnight first at Phantom Ranch then at Indian Gardens. Both itineraries are excellent. (SK goes down a ridge-line and so has excellent views.) Strive to fill up your phone's megabytes of memory with photos that you will never forget.
One small thing to stress: "electrolyte replacement drinks." Gookinaid. "Charlie Horses" are NO fun and they can be debilitating. In a desert climate you sweat while your skin remains dry. Mix the powder in your water, and carry more water than you think you'll need. It makes a BIG difference. Trust me on this.
How is the cell phone service in the canyon?
north rim you will have some and a little bit on the way up the bright angel after the Indian gardens..AT&T
aceyorba is right. There isn't much signal. Best signal up top is found near Grand Canyon Village. When you're in the Canyon you won't have signal. There are a few spots near the top of the Bright Angel Trail you find get service. There's also a random spot near the north side of Phantom Ranch where some have picked up signal by being in eye shot of the Grand Canyon village (a mile above), yet I wouldn't rely on it.
