Only discovered John accidently last year. Sad he doesn't visit UK. Had I known about him years ago I would have turned into a groupie. Thank goodness I'm much too old for that now. Listen to him often and always enjoy so much. Thanks John.
I had this song played along with a collage of pics, at my Father's funeral on the 18th June 2008. It was one of the most touching moments of the service for Dad.
This song is perfect for me right now. Yesterday went to a funeral for a dear and very special person in my life. Though this person is no longer alive, she will always remain close in my heart. RIP Helen, you may be gone but you will never be forgotten !!!
My Biology teacher went to John's show last night, and told me to listen to this song because my twin sister passed away 2 weeks ago. This is beautiful
I want to tell you how sorry I am to hear about your twin. That has to be incredibly painful. It is good that you share it as perhaps through the power of the great universe that we can help to share some of your burden. Thank you for sharing that. May god hold you in the palm of his hand at this time.
played this recording during funeral mass for my mother some years back......very few knew of the song so I had printed the words for those attending along with some others I spoke....I couldn't get to my words for several minutes as everyone, and I, were totally choked up
Another outstanding performance from John. I agree with Rossmc about the Eric Bogle songs especially "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and "Green Fields of France". Many have recorded the song, but John McDermott's version of the latter one is WITHOUT equal !!
On John's website you can get a Christmas DVD: Sharing Christmas with John McDermott and Friends. It comes with the CD of the same name via the online music store. I just got it and love it, some parts more than others. Performed July 2007. I've already watched it many times and have gotten used to John's new gray curls. It's not quite as polished as the PBS one, but if you love John, you'll love this.
I am touched by this song each time I hear it. I think mostly of my mother. We first heard this song at a John McDermott concert in Erie, Pa., in 2002. My mom went up to him to say hello as he stood in the lobby before the concert. She was thrilled. And she shed a tear when he sang this. Her thoughts were with her late grandson.
I thought I would look at a t v show called wagon train. I would say it is from the early forties Is this episode that I saw for the first time a This man is looking for his daughter. They show her working as the madam in an old shaloon. Is two men walk in the saloon with a package. She becomes so happy and excited.Because she ordered something months ago. They opened it and it was a beautiful music box. It twinkled out a song which she's sang. It was may moon. So so beautiful that inspired me to look for it on youtube. It was then that I met jpJohn McDermont! Funny how things happen! Of course, Now I am obsessed! I will be enjoying his voice and songs For the rest of my life I would never have known him if I didn't just look at that t v show!!
ty for this beautifull song i just lost my favorite uncle that just passed on oct 17 2009 i want to play this at his wake ty GAIN E GOD BLESS FOR THIS WONDERFULL TUNE
when I listen to this, it makes me think of my parents, and of a friend who died at the age of 52 five years ago. and it brings me some comfort to know they are still there guiding me
When you get a writer like Eric Bogle and a performer like John McDermott teamed up like they've been over the years, you can't beat that combination. Thanks for posting. Pete
You have my sympathy over your loss. My wife and I both lost our fathers when we were young. You might like one of my other John McDermott postings - "The Old Man." We have to fight-back the tears every time we hear it. May the worst day of your future be better than the best day of your past.
My husband, died 19 years ago-This song helped me through my darkest moments. Its still helping me now through one of the darkest time of my life. . Thank you for such a gift-Thank you, God!!!!
Absolutely wonderful and uplifting. A special thanks to kate285 for sharing this with me, I really needed to hear something like this this morning. Peace to everyone!
Perfect and so meaningful! A wonderful piece, and for me, the MOST important song I have ever, ever heard. Blessings to John McDermott! I have been lucky enough to have heard him in concert (Boston) and I am still grateful for that pleasant memory!
Thank you for posting this clip. I bought the Time to Remember album, but you are right, this is only on the dvd. I love the song and the singer. The dvd is wonderful and worth buying. Wish he'd make another one...
I liked it so much I had to go out and get the DVD - The rest of it is pretty neat, too! Thanks for posting here so I would know about it. I only knew of the song because our classical music station played it and I vought the 'Rememberence' CD. I still just love it! Mom, Steve, Aunt Ethel... I love you.
Few artists cover as many Bogle songs as John. If you look at other covers you see a lot of "Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and "No Man's Land" (aka Green Fields of France or Willie MacBride). Thanks John for sharing Eric's immense and profound song book.
Thank you for posting this here -- I first discovered John about four years ago, and this song is a favorite, reminding me of both my late mother and brother. I loved it so much, I even used it in a fan fiction story I was writing at the time -- a beautiful fit. Lovely... thank you!
The song was written by Eric Bogle., He has written some superb songs - check him out. This song was written after the Dunblane shootings in Scotland in 1996 - when a man walked into a school with a gun and shot dead 16 young kids and their teacher. This song was written for the kids (and their parents) but of course it can be applied to anyone who is bereaved. But check out some of Eric Bogle's other somgs. You'll be doing yourself a huge favour I promise you. xx
Today Jan.2/2018,My beautiful daughter would have been 18 today and I miss her so much my Fairy Angel in Heaven. My heart is broken and when a father looses a child at the age of 15.How can one move forward when his soul is now empty...
bertaberra - I want to see him too! Last year I had tickets, but then had back surgery close to the time of his performance, so I could not possibly go. So now I have to wait until he is in the New England area again, maybe NH in 2010.
Agreed. His live appearances are sooooo good! He is a very animated and emotionally dynamic performer; this drives most sound engineers nuts! The only other DVD that he appears on (to my knowledge) is the Dublin concert with the Irish Tenors. I have posted one clip from that show ("Voyage").
I hope John sings a song with Celine Dion one day soon. I would love to hear the different styles merge into one. Will u ever play in Las Vegas?? plz take Andy K. to Vegas with you!! 😅
In the USA this song would be so fitting for 911 memorials which will be held in Sept. Good people from many nations died here that day. I hope it is so that each Star is the light pf someone looking back.
@comeonfolks Thanks for the comment...but Perry Como??? Perry was probably the most unemotional and one-dimensional singer to ever make it big. Please don't lump John into the same category as Perry. :-)
Why is it that for the last few years just about all I listen to is John McDermott.
Because just like in my old life, it Soothes your soul.
Only discovered John accidently last year. Sad he doesn't visit UK. Had I known about him years ago I would have turned into a groupie. Thank goodness I'm much too old for that now. Listen to him often and always enjoy so much. Thanks John.

John's version of Eric's song has gotten me though a very sad time in my life--it still does. Magnificent!

In remembrance of Cecil W. Garrett, Marcos DeCampos and Greg Nowak who left us much to early in their lives. Those who loved them miss them so much.
Your light still shines me, in my heart! Lovely!

Had never heard this song until the chorus I sing in recently sang with John in concert. We accompanied him in this song.

I've come to love John lately-through TH-cam. Does he ever have live performances on the West Coast?

Check out Eric Bogle who wrote this song. He's written several of the songs John McDermott sings
