how much Apollo DSP is used when running LUNA in virtual Neve mode with the channel extensions and summing?...is a QUAD or greater a must or can you mix just fine with a DUO with no issues?

I just recorded and entire RnB soul record and evening before do any kind of EQ or mixing it sounds warm just like analog Consoles and tape... I’ve never heard any other DAW sound so smooth with 0 digital artifacts. I’ll be posting some of the record on my page after I mix master it tomorrow on my channel...

Spent some time with LUNA this morning. First thought? Lean...minimalism. Bloat-free. 2nd thought? The hardware integration is something I need. It just makes sense. I also liked the instruments. Seems like the software influences how the hardware responds; like how much or little and adjustment of a parameter affected the sound (perhaps it just feels like new algorithms to me since I haven't updated my firmware or software in 5years.) Bottom line of my first impression, I LIKE LUNA.

I have a little issue with it. When you stop the playback it does not stop at the cursor position but it goes back to the original start place.
When we use the unison insert within Luna does it mute the unison insert from the control view or will it use both unison inserts for the same track at once?

Come on, UAD "Invented" the workflow bar is not that accurate. It was Presonus that has first come up with the workflow templates, called Macros, for their Studio One, not UAD.

Very happy to see that we now have 8 inserts in the Console.
Is it also possible now to use AU plugs directly in Console? (No, haven't upgraded yet because of software needing OS Sierra.)
In risk of this sounding like a complaint but wouldn't it be interesting if some media talked about the strategy of doing free products as part of an overall sales strategy?
We see it in the gaming industry and we will probably see it a lot more in other software developers' strategy.
This is off course nothing that the developers are keen on discussing but customers should be aware that “free” always has a strategy behind it.
I do like the efforts and you have the possibility to chose as a customer but the more enlightened you are, the better choices you do.
Just a thought, and happy to hear what other thinks.

I know the name of this product is named 'LUNA Recording System'... but when all is said and done, it's a DAW.... so call it a DAW not a recording system... unless, of course, UA are insisting that you only ever refer to it as a recording system, in which case, UA are bunch of ....
What is the logic of not being able to record with the tape plug-in? When I use UA Console to record to ProTools I can do that and if I'm trying to emulate an analog sound chain that's what I want to do.
I agree and expected Tape was recorded within the audio. That’s a bit of a shame really cos I also recorded the Studer within Console and then didn’t use it anymore during mixing in Pro Tools. Hope they change this.

Great stuff. Easier for me to see you tracking and using the program, rather than the LUNA videos that are rather disconnected to me. One issue i have not seen addressed is the fade/volume feature. I selected an area to fade from zero up but the track volume is unchanged. Is this a bug, or am I missing something? Look forward to checking out all your videos. Thanks.
Hey James, can you please, please, please make an audio quality comparison video of LUNA vs Studio One vs Pro Tools vs Logic vs Cubase? This would be very helpful. So many on Reddit and Facebook claim that LUNA sounds analog before you add the Neve Summing and Tape emulations, others say they don't believe it. I just want to know the truth before I decide if I should spend my savings on a new Apollo interface...
The uad plugins can impart and emulation that sounds great. How analogue does it really sound is more up to your ears and wallet as you will have to pay for an an $$Apollo and then on top of that you will have to then buy the Neve Summing$$ plugins.You could always get yourself an analogue mixer like the SSLsix and research the analogue gear you wish to have the sound of- and buy clones of those pieces which would cost about the same and give you far more flexibility and much more headroom (actual analogue unlimited by the HZ and Bit depth of recorded digital audio and ability to run without dongles... You can get a satellite to run as many UAD plugins you wish to use.
Why is this not for pc?
What if your thunderbolt interface isn't a U.A.? Cubase is Yamaha yet you don't need to use the Steinberg interfaces, would this work with an Antelope interface?
Because this LUNA minimum cost is $500 (the least expensive dongle/interface required for use).
@@AnthonyMartinsRock I have an i-lock, so this just isn't free? I'd hate to see U.A. behave like Sony and their rather fascist business model. For free I would give it a try, Love Cubase but hate Pro Tools. Would like to try this Luna, what a shame.
@@drampadreg1386 No, you need to pay minimum $500.00 (arrow)or $800.00(Apollo) or a few thousand $$ for more than 4 channels to use Luna for free.
Its meant for those who already have a UAD interface....they announced that when they introduced it. Its free for UA interface owners. There are plenty other DAWs out there and they all do the same thing, just depends on who's operating it.

It’s not free. They made it sound like neve summing built in, tape plugins and the rest were all part of the system. Not that I expected to get the moog plugin really for free (but alchemy in Logic is, beat that!), but if you add all the features you get easily over a 1000 euros. Mixbus sells M32C for 79 and does all the same :)
That was the whole point of this "free" software, to make people buy plugins. Have to say it's pretty smart business idea and I'm really surprised they even allowed AU plugins.
@Ne Valja I'm not really complaining, I think Luna is pretty good and the Audio plugins are wonderful, I just think the marketing was a not clear on what to expect.
According to “revert to saved” you have a new auto save every fifth minute, but you actually mean Luna saves every second?
13:50 loaded maybe 6 plugins and already at 40% usage. UA needs to focus on newer SHARC chips that aren't dog s**t
You are able to purchase UA Satellite units which will give you additional shark chips.

@@KC-bi9jw that is their solution not mine. And your ill posted response assumes I am ok with that(not offended as I know where your coming from). I sold my apollo to escape the expensive walled garden of UA. I replaced it with an SSL2(as I still use my Orpheus)which is cheaper more portable and more versatile (for me). I was not happy with the dongle like expensive software restrictive system. Bless.

I think this is nice but!!! i have a major bone to pick with UA and Apollo... A couple years ago (maybe more) my twin MKii started making this white noise whooshing sound that cannot be undone and they have offered zero answers whatsoever with how to resolve this. if you check the phrase "white noise from my apollo" you will find that I am not alone in this predicament and that reinitializing the unit which is the only advice anyone at UA has ever offered works only very temporarily and then this sound comes back in which does in fact print to the track so it's incredibly debilitating... until they fix that! I wish to go no further into their UA world. Also... this problem can be heard simply by turning the unit on even when it's attached to nothing.... so it's not coming from somewhere else.
sounds like your phantom power might be unnecessarily turned on ? I had this issue once and realised I'd left my phantom power on, after switching from a condenser mic to a dynamic mic.

@@TreyBlaise No you can use any AU plug-in in the Insert slots, not only UAD-2 plug-ins. I'll demo this in the 2nd part of this series. This video was just a GUI walkthrough.

The catch is clear. Stripped down version. Spend 700 bucks to get tape saturation, neve summing, and moog emulation
Wrong. It comes with oxide tape extension and if you have studer 800 plugin then the extension is free

I think so, I dabbed on it a little today and the midi editor was there, but it was kinda shit. At least what was able to figure out on my own .

I can't launch Luna!! Someone help!! Every time I try to launch it just says "application not responding."
Might be because you have to have an ilok account setup. Had the same issue until I set that up

IT'S NOT FREE! They force you to own one of their Apollo interfaces, which btw. are very good. However, if you don't own one of these, Luna won't run, even if you own their DSP products such as the UAD-2 Satellite or PCI cards. I spent more then 5000$ on their plugins and DSP, but can't run Luna although they say the benefit of it that it runs using their DSP. I feel ripped off!
Bill Sak it’s literally a recording system built to only work with the Apollo hardware interfaces. What you feel is stupid not ripped off.

Pro Tools is the biggest scam of the century anyways. Nearly every engineer I talk to agrees on that too, its not just me. Pro Tools sure knows how to empty your bank account though.
This DAW is going backwards. Here’s why I said that:
Platform - Mac OS only
Authorization: Hardware or Dongle
Why would I give up my DAW (Studio One) when it provides me flexibility (OS X or Windows) and I receive numerous licenses and doesn’t need a dongle. Even my other DAW (Reason) provides flexibility. I’m salty because UAD is doing a full court press on the marketing but it is going backwards to what ProTools does instead of moving forward. Oh by the way I do own a UAD Apollo and numerous plugins and I love using the Unison plugins but I don’t see the value/benefit of the LUNA DAW.

set up mics and records instruments until they have the “perfect take”, then you are going to love LUNA right off the bat. It’s so much more than a multi-track tape machine but it is a very good multi-track tape machine. I can see myself using LUNA for live recordings I have that level of confidence in it. However, applications like Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools and even the now not so new kid on the block Studio One are mature systems with features that we know and most of the time love.
This isn't a Thunderbolt system! It is a Mac only Thunderbolt system! NO Windows love yet!
Can hardly find a thunderbolt 3 motherboard out in the market yet for ITX, damn shame.
@@HiLoMusic I have a Sweetwater/ASUS system with a Thunderbolt EX 3 pcie card installed! The Thunderbolt card is branded by ASUS and works flawlessly. I think the only requirement was Windows 10 and one of the newer Intel chips. I got this system specifically for UAD compatibility. So, LUNA is NOT a Thunderbolt program, but rather a Mac OS specific program! I had intended to get a new Mac, until I saw that it was made of GOLD and only intended for the very rich! Windows is years behind in system I/O, so it might take years for LUNA to be functional. I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Who tf is going to pay $4,000 for a daw when you have FL studio Ableton etc. Which are cheaper and better lol

The real question is - Why Luna, when we have so many other capable DAW's already - Protools, Reaper, Cubase, Studio One. Ableton, and others, what is the benefit?
No one has explained this. Is latency better, what what what is the reason to use Luna. C'mon, learning a whole new workflow is a pain, what is the benefit for all that pain....?
If Protools has migrated from proprietary ties to their hardware, with Pro-Tools Native - so one is not tied to their hardware, why should we be going backward, to constrict ourselves to the UAD hardware audio interfaces.
WHo in UAD came up with this idea. to solve what problem exactly.
Its a two edged sword, is this an admission that there is a problem with the integration of other DAW's with Apollo audio interfaces?. If so is this the solution?
Someone in UAD is burying their head in the sand. If a hardware audio interface has issues with 3rd party DAW, Why should we trust a company which could not get their act together on a hardware audio interface, with a new DAW.
Anyone on this path is a guinea pig. Why ask for pain and teething problems...
If there is a problem with Apollo, get together with the DAW manufacturers - define an API, and work with them to add support for this API, not design an internal API, for use only within LUNA. Seriously I thought techies were smart - Who is the system architect behind this who cannot think about a simple API and done.
Melodyne has a custom API, and most of the major DAW's support this API, that's the intelligent way to do things, not ask people to put all their eggs in one basket, and commit harakiri (group suicide) with a company whose Audio interface business is in trouble.....
I wonder what's next? UAD microphones that will only work with UAD audio interfaces..!!!
And to add insult to all Windows Apollo owners - its Mac only - and Thunderbolt only so those with older Macs are out of the picture... maximum 5 years, this product will be gone.. free or not.
That moog synth did sound amazing though. but we have no clue if its using the DSP to generate its sounds, or native. That may be one reason to buy in, the moog synth was amazing - something special. So 'im not all critical, if there is something good I will be the 1st to admit it.
You clearly don't understand but yet in still you complain about something you're asking clarity on. Those who get it get it.
UAD hardware can be used in any DAW with zero problems.
It's a strategic move to get you into the UAD eco system. You'll love the plugins and you need more processing power, you'll buy satellites or a bigger UAD hardware down the line. That's how businesses work, nevertheless, its comes free for now and people who start into music production can directly get a great sounding and a capable DAW.
