    OMG, you are moving back to Penang! I was just thinking I will catch up with you in Melbourne in the next few weeks. I am moving over for work, leaving beautiful Brisbane! Best wishes. I was in JB last month. I think the food culture has changed after all the shutdowns. No one seems to go to hawker centers. Everyone uses Grab to get the food ordered. Does not taste the same. Thank you for preserving the true taste of the Malaysia I grew up in. Cheers JD

      @Jeyadev Sreedharan..Hi JD, .most Melbournians and Sydneysiders have moved or moving to sunny Queensland but you are moving here 😆. It must be a very attractive job offer for you to move down south.
      I know what you mean by things are not the same back in Malaysia ever since the pandemic and reopening. I guess it is almost the same here. More food deliveries. We have tried once when back in Penang this year with Grab delivery. Was very disappointed. Only because we were too exhausted on arrival and didn't have a transport so ordered in. Once is enough. Prefer to order fresh grocery home delivered and do own cooking instead. Healthier and cheaper option too.
      Cheers,
      Victor

      @@foodtripwithvictor Yup, I am dreading coming back to Melbourne, but I have to go where the work is! Brisbane is the place to be. Unfortunately, prices of Asian dishes have skyrocketed here. Nasi Lemak @$18. That is almost 60 Ringgit! Funnily enough, the best nasi lemak I had this time I was in Malaysia was on my return flight on MAS!! Thanks to your videos, I am doing fine from scratch 😀. Best Wishes to you and your family. If you organise foodie treks in Penang, post it on youtube. Never know, I might make a trip to Batu Maung for some seafood and a durian lunch with. Penang Laksa chaser!!

    • @foodtripwithvictor

      @@jadenetworks $18! That’s outrageous but then lunch in Melbourne CBD is no longer affordable anymore. It’s anywhere between $16-$20 for a bowl or plate of noodle or “economy” rice + 1/2/3 dishes! I have to hunt around for a meal $15 max 🤣 as I am retired now. I like a Sri Lankan economy rice at The Paramount food court. It’s called Ceylon Wok. Located on the east end of Bourke Street. Best value in the city for a cheap eat. $10 rice + 1 meat, 1 veg. th-cam.com/video/CbNGlSd0aB0/w-d-xo.html You should try it when you are down here. Very popular with business lunch crowd. I don’t know how the students are able to afford and eat out nowadays without spending more than $20/day on food. I plan to do more TH-cam Shorts content when I am back in Asia to show trips and places I will visit and food I will try. Hence, the rebranding of my channel to “foodtrip”. Cheers, Victor

    Hi Victor, i just realised a Penang Hokkien chef here in TH-cam. I'm a Hokkien too from Sarawak. Nice cooking, Victor.

      Hi @Lim Kim Guek..thank you. Glad you came across my channel. I’ve been to Kuching few years ago and I love your beautiful city. I did speak Hokkien at the Chinese shops. Both our Hokkien are same same but different. I think Sarawakian Hokkien is more pure than Penang Hokkien. From memory, I think the shop owners are mostly Hakka descendants because they can’t really understand my colloquial dialect but I may be wrong 😅 Cheers, Victor

    As usual looks amazing your videos are great, also as you explain where it’s from and your other videos it makes me want to come to Malaysia as well. The culture behind the South East Asian countries is amazing and the food along with it. There is the odd Nepali dish that’s a fusion as well, it’s all just so good. This will have to go in my recipe book to try I’m sure we will love it here. 😀👍🇬🇧🇳🇵

      Thank you @Steve R…once you are in one of the countries in SEA, it is fairly inexpensive to travel around to other parts and countries. I guess the challenge is whether you can have a long or short vacation. Recommend to take a long break is you are planning to come to SEA. Plenty to see and experience and trying out the wonderful food in the region. Cheers, Victor

    Great video Victor, the dish looks great! The "dark caramel" sauce is not one I'm familiar with - is that similar to a dark soy sauce? Penang is definitely on my list of places to visit, safe travels sir.

    • @foodtripwithvictor
      @foodtripwithvictor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi @ps…thank you. The standard dark soy sauce doesn’t have much taste. It’s normally used in Chinese cooking to give the dish a darker colour..so the dish looks nicer. Not so dull and boring if that makes sense. The dark caramel sauce adds sweetness and slight saltiness, and a slight dark colour to the dish. If you can’t find the brand I featured in my video, you can substitute with the Indonesian brand ABC kecap manis. Although the Indonesian brand is on the sweeter side. Cheers, Victor
