Owning a condo can be seen as a form of forced saving. However, there are trade-offs involved, as you may need to sacrifice certain short-term comforts for long-term financial benefits. Buying a condo requires careful consideration and a strong commitment, especially if you have family. Additionally, anyone who wish buying a condo to rent out, please keep in mind the following expenses: 1/ Monthly interest on your mortgage, 2/ Monthly condo maintenance fees, 3/ Annual property tax (IRAS), 4/ Additional Annual income tax (IRAS) on rental income, 5/ Landlord responsibilities: As a good landlord, be prepared for additional costs related to repairs or replacements as per the tenancy agreement. 6/ Think again for other potential expenses (based on your situation). Many people overlook or are unaware of these expenses in detail. Compare all these expenses with your rental income and potential capital appreciation of your desired condo to make an informed decision. And finally, ensure you forecast your cash flow for at least 6 months ahead-the longer, the better.

Actually I feel that having a condo can preserve more wealth than hdb since condo prices rise more than hdb. Many people get condo as an investment as it is much easier than stocks and shares. For me, I owned both hdb n condo, I struggled for 13 years to pay off my condo n now m enjoying my passive rental income. If I did not struggle to buy my condo (which some people were against me of doing so last time), I will not have $5000+ passive income mthly from rental now. Sometimes, we need to bite the bullet now for a better future. So for me to stretch myself to own a condo is worth it. If there's no good passive income in Singapore, it's hard to retire. No pain no gain.

Hi Mr Loo, absolutely agree with your views. As a HDB dweller, I never quite understood the rationale behind purchasing a condo other than it’s facade. I find people staying in HDB are also generally nicer and more tolerant towards their neighbours.
I often find myself questioning why would these people want to get such an overpriced property simply to flex? Sure, they look good on the Outside but Condos units are generally smaller to the point of being cramped, monthly maintenance fees are ridiculously high for utilities that they seldom use.
Lastly as an owner, why would you want to be controlled by a group of committee members of so called “Elites” of their respective fields telling you what you CAN or CAN’T do in your OWN place? 🤦🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

Owning a condo doesn't mean you are rich or poor. Being able to own a condo just means that your monthly income is sufficient enough for a bank to grant you a loan to finance the condo. Meaning on average one is making a middle class income. In a way if you are still financing a mortgage you are still poor as you are still in debt. Think Mr. Loo definition of poor is someone making a middle class income but has 700,000 in mortgage debt versus someone who only has 200,000 in mortgage debt. So I guess it is ridiculous for someone who is 700,000 in debt looking down on someone who has 200,000 in debt. Who is richer ? Someone who can pay 160,000 in cash for a Japanese car or someone that is only able to pay a deposit and has to take out a loan for 260, 000 for a European car. End of the day it boils down to your values and priorities. I know medical specialist and medical directors that make more than the average middle class person and yet choose to stay in a HDB and drive a normal Japanese car. Let's face it just look at what someone does for a living . A doctor, lawyer, pilot .. who stays in a 4 room HDB are you going to label them as poor? Likewise your average civil servant who lives in a condo are they rich? Staying in a condo just means you are willing to take on the risk as well as to take on the challenge of financing a big monthly mortgage. Of course if you can afford a condo, drive a luxury car, and have no or very little mortgage debt compared to your income then you are rich. Sorry to say it know your place and don't pretend to be something you are not. I am a peasant with no aspiration of looking like a noble. If the "'nobles'' want to look down and me and laugh. So be it. I rather stay in my HDB, not have to worry about the mortgage, have money to support my children's education/enrichment, spend on my hobbies, and still have enough to travel.

So for the first few years, have to live with stress.. Each day, u stay in the condo, u can't really enjoy it cost at the back of your mind.. The mortgage u still need to pay. U can't stop working or switch your job.. Debt still is debt. Let say u bought a condo is 1.9 million. 10 years later. The condo value is 2.6 million... But u are still paying 1.9 million. Whereas other have to pay 2.5 millions in order to stay in this property. U will earn from this if u sell. If 10 years later, u are still servicing your mortgage. U decided to sell, u will earn at 600000. U profits.. But still have not finished your 1.9 million loan. U sell your condo and downsize or down grade. U still have to fork out money to buy another flat or house.. At the end of the day.. U still will not earn much...

@@captainrubber the biggest issue is that the majority of people do not care about whether you are staying in a condo or HDB. If the topic of discussion is about not overstretching budget, then yes, this applies to anyone buying even a flat that should not overstretch to buy a 5 room flat if one can only afford a 3 room flat. The argument about perception of condo vs HDB is not even a mainstream thought process and seems like the writer was trying very hard to justify to himself why he is still living in a HDB and trying to show to everyone that he is rich but still staying in a HDB.

End of the day, no right or wrong. Depends on family situation and preference. Plan your finances properly. Don't overleverage. Do your due diligence. Be a nice human being and treat everyone with respect.
Asset progression is just one form of investment which EVERYONE should do some form of. Some like stocks, some like property. Both can help you grow your wealth and both have downsides that you must be aware of. The worst option of all is to do nothing and let your money devalue in the bank or cash.
When you are young and have more energy and earning capability, if your finances allow it, property can help to diversify your portfolio in addition to other investments.
Know your end game. For me, property is just another vehicle to help grow my assets. In the future when it's time to retire, I hope my investments, whether in stocks or property will give me and my family more options to choose how we want to live our lives.

The HDB income ceiling for purchasing new flats exists for a reason. Those who earn above the ceiling but are not considered wealthy shouldn't be labeled as "poor" or criticized for not exploiting the public housing system. They are simply respecting the intent of the policy, which is to ensure that public housing remains available to those who truly need it and not for those who are financially well-off but choose to exploit the system. Wealthy yet lives in an HDB flat as a show of "humility," it's not a sign of modesty-it's selfish, stingy, and self-serving. By playing the "low-profile millionaire" card, you're not only seeking unnecessary recognition but also driving up HDB prices, making it harder for those who truly need affordable housing to access it.

Nothing and no one are spared! The world is changing rapidly, there are more uncertainties, but people are still stuck in their old mindsets, thinking that the party will never end. Many in China bought the high and heady days of the real estate market in 2020 to 2022 and are now suffering heavy losses. Used to stay in a condo, but found that there was no time really to use the nice facilities. But I see many retirees using the facilities everyday. So maybe more suited for them. The space in condo is also small.
I think hdb is more value for money, after 10 years, I renovated it and truly enjoyed staying in it while having no stress of loan, or working in stressful jobs to maintain a condo loan.
There is a limit to the population in Sg and there is an aging population. When many condos are more than 20 years old and in excess as more pple die and release more of such old condos into the market, I am not sure who wants to buy such old properties. Its a potential bubble down the road. If u are thinking gov will keep bringing in foreigners to buy old condos, I am not sure if they can afford it if they are just here to work, or they would prefer new condos. If I am buying, I would rather buy a cheaper and newer condo. Also, there are many resale hdb for PRs to buy and foreigners to rent, so I am not sure why they will want to buy old condo where prices may depreciate. Remember, future may not always follow historical events. Making money from property investments may be easy last time but may not be in the future with a declining birth rate, aging population and other factors that may make Sg not as attractive to foreign investments and foreigners. For example, if there is a war or climate event in Sg nx time, properties can be worthless and hard to cash out.

Your 2 videos on this topic is rather illogical and self-serving from the examples and statements that you have used.
In your videos, you keep stressing to people to stop stereotyping that HDB dwellers are generally poor or not as well to do or successful as those in a condo. In the first place, it doesn't mean that everyone is stereotyping in the way you mentioned. Of course there will be some people who does stereotype and this is normal. But you shouldn't say as if the majority is stereotyping.
Furthermore, the examples you used are rather illogical. You said that there are also rich people living in HDB and poor people living in condos. Of course all scenarios are possible. You can also have rich people living in condos and poor people living in HDBs. So what is your point? You cannot just use a specific example to try to make your point when it is logical that there will always be some rich people living in HDB and some poor people living in condos. It is rather silly to state the obvious!
What you cannot do is to take a few example and make sweeping statements to prove your own hypothesis. It is silly. What is important is to use the norm data and majority data to make a sound and informed view. From the data, I am sure that in general as a median, the income levels of those staying condos would be higher than those staying in HDBs and as a median, you will have more successful people as a percentage living in condos as compared to HDBs. This is the data that you should be using and not using a specific example that there are also rich people living in HDB ad your argument. It is rather nonsensical. It is like saying out of 100 people who eat McDonald's everyday, not all will be fat. Of course that is the case. But from statistics and probsbility point of view, those who eat McDonald's everyday ad compared to those who do not, there will be a higher percentage of people who will be fat.
In your video, you even make the incredulous comment that "stop thinking that private property is the only and sure way to financial freedom". Who is saying that? Is everyone saying that? Obviously no. You probably just used 1 or 2 persons view and make an illogical statement as if this is what everyone is saying. Totally illogical comment.
Your main contention point of your video is not to overstretch budget. I think that comment is fine but to go one big round to make comments as your did about poor/rich people living in HDB/condo and all your other non-data backed statement is really nonsensical and shallow in my view.

Having debts or not having debts in your 40s, 50s or beyond is subjective. There could be some condo owners, million dollar hdb owners or branded car owners would prefer to have debts on their huge purchases so as to keep them motivated in their jobs, can’t quit easily.

You made this statement "I didn't say ALL condo owners are poor!" this is such an incredulous comment to make just to try to explain your way out. People have commented about you but NO ONE in their right mind would be accusing you to mean that ALL condo owners are poor. What you did was really disingenuous. People were merely saying that what you said is not accurate or reflective and they definitely didn't mean to say that you meant All condo owners are poor. It is common sense that this statement is illogical in the first place and no one would make such a silly assumption.
It is like saying all landed property owners are poor, which is totally silly and an illogical comment to make.
So no, you are wrong. No one in their right mind would say that you meant to say that all condo owners are poor. No one would mean that so do not put words into others and try to hide your own error.
You are really twisting words left right centre.

Hi Mr Loo, you are right. Like you, I have staffs who stay in the condos and own Mercedes and BMWs. I would say it’s a choice of life. My family choose to live humbly to have that option to retire or continue working, and the freedom to go on vacations any time we want. Rich is to be free and how fast we can achieve that depends on the choice of lifestyle and expectation in life. There is no right/wrong to CONDO/HDB; and which one is richer or of a higher status but rather which option brings you happiness, and this; everyone have a price to pay.

The percentage of people living in condos has gone up significantly since 2000 with the average size being smaller now. Those who stretch to buy small OCR condos recently are probably not well off, whereas those who have lived in sizable condos for years probably paid it off and have invested well.

    Two Comments to share:
    1. It's silly for condo dwellers to rebut angrily because it belittle themselves. A really rich person does not care what was said. He is confident.
    2. This proves English is Ambiguous. How so? What is "Rich" to different people is different. Rich to a person is someone with $500k in the bank. But that's not rich to another person. Someone can regard $1m as rich while the really rich regards $10m and above to be rich.
So, those lambasting belittled themselves in the public domain. It's entertaining. They prove their ignorance of the above points

U dun need to eat?no utilities bills? no transport cost to move around? no hp bill? All these are still things u need to pay for leh… every day u open ur eyes in the morning, u start paying for something… where got debt free? Comments made by creator, are mostly one sided, biased, social divisive & defensive.Everyone is having different purpose, reason, family situation on their home purchase. Unnecessary to compare or subscribe to others’ view & perception on the type of home one stays in.

Even in dating app most of the ladies will use this to generally gauge where you stand, they will straight up ask "where do you stay?".
If you answer condo or bungalow, you score a ticket to go out with her.
If you answer HDB, instantly the conversation will be closed by her.
The reality of girls nowadays, too materialistic.
However, the truth is that they do not know that most rich ones are humble and prefer to live in HDB, and those in condos are full of debt and higher egos. Higher egos are usually the ones who couldn't last long in marriage and end up getting divorce.

It makes laugh watching this video. It is like you know a substantial few fools in a certain area, begin to generalise that everyone there must be fools. There are condos, and there are condos. Tell you secretly, some people will never buy a unit in a mass market condo. Those are HDB upgraders' enclave. They will lament no government grants for their maintenance fees, do not attend AGMs, yet up in arms when there is an increase. They don't understand. But they want private pool, private lift, private gardens and security guards. These are the ones who 打肿脸皮充胖子。The poor condo dwellers. But i agree that the HDB dwellers are the most fortunate people on earth, except when you have bad neighbours who occupy the whole corridor with their hoarded items, those who mistook the common areas as their toilets.

I agree should not overstretch to own a private property or even a car. Many people borrow to drive a big car.

If you say ‘segment’ of condo owners, do you actually have their bank and other financial details or hear say. When you say segment could you quantify or put a number behind it. If your statement or argument is based solely on your personal experience and observation then your argument is heavily flawed. You have to articulate all arguments with actual facts, data and statistics and NOT feelings and emotions. I’m not a hater. I’m just pointing out the obvious cause you have potential in making better videos with better informed decisions and information. Btw I'm a broke hdb owner.
