Was looking for a video covering the removal and installation of the carrier in a Dana 60 but all the videos I found always stopped after they pulled the axles. Decided to give this video a watch and wouldn't you know, the Dana 44 looks just the same as the 60, just a little smaller. Appreciate your video, it is very thorough and full of great tips. I now have the assurance I needed to remove and install my carrier so I can replace my inner tube seals. 👍
Finally, a great video and technician that illustrates his knowledge thoroughly. Much better than all those $100 an hr. AutoZone wanna be pic & pull mechanics on utube.
Another good video. I like how you show that there is more than one way to do some of this stuff....depending on the tools and materials we have on hand. Thanks!
"have a hanging device in case the job gets too bad,,,,,,,,, " "make sure we are well lubed before we give her the shaft....." Love the sense of humor... Very professional of you to do the little things like cleaning off the extra rust, etc. After all it lessens likelihood of seal damage. Good on you.
Great job Will. Good tips about removing the carrier from a Dana 44. I imagine any wood workers were cringing when you used that chisel for removing the seal. It is a good idea.
tks I have a 2004 grand Cherokee but looks similar, now I know what to expect, and the importance of reinstalling everything just the way it was before removing, great job !!!
Hope my boss doesn't notice how much time I spend watching your videos. This was great as always. BTW Walmart store brand brake cleaner is the cheapest, I always stock up when we are there.
The public who bring their cars in for repair have no idea the investment in tooling it takes to run a repair shop. The introduction of solid state electronics has made this even worse. Your attention to detail is impressive.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL thanks for the mention Will & Tammy nice to see you with your shirt the correct way it must be all those late nights great video as always my friends carnt wait until the next one
One Auto, thank you! I Appreciate the feedback. It's the worst isn't it lol gives the shop that true shop smell it's a pleasant blend after the initial smell hahaha 😂
R. E. Hill I do 👍 😋 done many of these on the ground. use good tall jack stands. Proper preparation will make this job go a lot smoother even on a lift the tools used make up a big part of the job, mind set is even greater I believe. but yes 😉 happy dance
I want to commend you on your attention to cleaning the bolt threads and mating surfaces of the parts going to be reused. Many mechanics do NOT. It does take time, but I have always found that it is worth it. Common sense stuff actually. Just because you got it out of the hole alright doesn't mean you won't strip it on the way back in. Good working ethics pal !
nice and useful video - preload adjustment (specifically by hand) really needs experience....In my case I counted down the threads before I removed the nut and also marked the yoke/nut position. Reinstalled it the same way, now I can hear some whining in the diff only when coasting and I also can feel a play at the pinion - guess I'd need to tighten the nut a tad more to zero play and check the preload - yoke should be easily turned then without having an inch pounds wrench - your thoughts ? thanks !
Would it been a good idea to put that shellac stuff on the outside of the oil seals before setting them in the axle tube. What was the shellac stuff. Thanks. Good video.
Great video Will! One question, why would it be important that the drive shaft is aligned to the pinion flange the way it came off? I noticed someone had marked it in the past. After watching this video, I'm a little worried about the pinion on my project truck since I replaced the pinion seal but didn't mark anything. I guess I need to get one of those in-lb torque wrenches ;)
its just "Fail safe" Practice to put back as removed. i have done many in the past without marking. its a balanced thing if the drive train was balanced as a unit. however i wouldn't worry to much about the yoke being on the same, not even a second thought to be honest. however marking the nut and pinion that is a great technique. yes your most accurate method is to measure preload with a touque whench. don't worry to much about the flange to shaft 50/50 shot if it has vibration try turning
Nice work will, you really do know rear differentials, have you worked in a transmission garage? I have never seen shellac used before, did you use it on all the seals? what is it used for?
Jonathan Dean thank you, yes I grew up in a family owned repair shop, my Dad specialized in rebuilding transmissions, engines, essentially anything in the drivetrain. I later followed suit, It can be very labor intensive though turned into a love hate relationship for me over the years lol But its rewarding, brings me back. Schelac gasket sealant compound is more old school. Dries harder has it's place, kinda faded out with new technology. Thanks again
200 jeep cherokee xj Will a broken leaf spring shackle bracket cause the rear end to be a little off enough to where you can hear a noise in the rear end? I have replace Ring Gear and what i call cluster bearing with what i know was a good set up out of my other Jeep with the same ratio. New axle bearing, no help. I thought well has to be pinion bearing then i thought will that broken shackle bearing cause that rear end to be off centered and make a noise???
Whats up man im doing a dana 30 now all I did was remove carrier , and im gonna do seals , just the inner seals not the pinion seal. Can I just put the carriier back in and be done ?or did i need to make sure the carrier meets the pinion "in" the same exact teeth when I simply just pulled it out ?
Duncan MacKenzie I agree ☝️ however it keeps the repair shop smell alive. Friday a customer stopped by, came in and the first thing he said was, I love that smell!! 🙈🙄😳lol
John R it all depends really, road conditions, driving habits, town miles vs highway to many to call. However what I worry about more is removing and reinstalling
Ugh a low pinion dana 30 I HATE LP Dana 30 they literally give the Dana 30s a bad rep cause I've had 8 xjs and I can tell anyone short of about 38"-40" and up tires the high pinion Dana 30 is such an underrated axle it's a shame and let me tell you I've got one right now trussed, c-gussets, inner welded in tube sleeves with WJ knucle and brake upgrade locked up and it's a hulk of an axle for a non 1 ton non full width axle for the abuse and tires it runs with zero signs of fatigue but I see the LP Dana 30s and I get sick to my stomach🤢
Brake cleaner is one of the most toxic of materials. No one should breathe the spray or get it on your skin. Pretty much the same goes for any shop solvent or lubricant.
Yes we all know its unhealthy. Do you think people who are smart enough to repair today's vehicle are not aware of what we work with. Just like people who drink and smoke we are all adults and make choices

TH-cam is full of hacks, but when you pulled out the Indian Head I knew I was on the right channel. Nice work!
It's really nice when you show and or talk about different methods for the job. The video was enjoyed very much. Good job
Thank you
EXCELLENT - I'm going to be doing this job within the next couple days
That's great to hear! Best of luck with the job!
Great job Will. Good tips about removing the carrier from a Dana 44. I imagine any wood workers were cringing when you used that chisel for removing the seal. It is a good idea.
Thank you for the feedback! lol probably had them all cringing, wood workers and auto body techs ;) thanks again
That dinging hammer is a good idea for seals, might use it myself.
Chisels were made to be sharpened!!
HAHA!
tks I have a 2004 grand Cherokee but looks similar, now I know what to expect, and the importance of reinstalling everything just the way it was before removing, great job !!!
You make it look easy.. :)
Thanks for all the great tips
I enjoy your detailed videos.
Dan
D K the edit helps with that as well, only quarter of the job when condensed 😉 thank you
Thanks for the great tutorial. I need to do this job and you gave me every detail I need to know to do it right. No fluff just useful stuff!
Nice job Will. Sometimes the vent will stick or get blocked and the pressure will blow the lube past the worn seals. Nice reseal job!!
Hayward's Automotive yes good call! Wish I covered that. One day I will make the perfect rear end video😉 think it will be a brunette 😜🙈
Hope my boss doesn't notice how much time I spend watching your videos. This was great as always. BTW Walmart store brand brake cleaner is the cheapest, I always stock up when we are there.
75hdfxe what's 35min 😋let's hope not lol thanks for the feedback and stopping by, dose the job well! 👍

Your attention to detail is impressive.
AKA Wireguy so true, what you guys see has been my life investment. Many years plus some passed down from generations
Nice video! You also want to make sure your axle vent tube is clear or excessive internal pressure could make the seals leak too...
Keith Hastings yes very good point wish I covered 👍
Great video. Thanks for the torque specs. Helped me out allot. Just put my carrier back in and didn't no what to torque it to
Great job Will ! Enjoyed .. My jeep chucked a diff seal a while back , Got if fixed a no leaks ! Thumbs up ..
Solid craftmanship...well done sir.
That was Awesome!!
You got a new sub!!!
And yes, I do appreciate the slight humor.....
Nice one Will, really enjoying your video's.
All the best,
Tuning in from New Zealand
Mark Thompson that awesome! I'm good you enjoy. Thanks for the kind words and leaving a comment. How's the weather out your way?
Hi Will, its the middle of winter here, but where I live in the North Island it doesn't snow but cold enough and lots of rain.
Keep up the good work.
Mark Thompson winter 😳and here I am wishing for A/C most days. It's starting to get chilly here now that you mentioned it, summer is going way to fast
Good. Some of the best videos on TH-cam. My only criticism is, too few and far between. Keep them coming.
Dave Caselli thank you for the feedback, been picking up steam the last few months almost up to speed 😉👍🎬🔔
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL thanks for the mention Will & Tammy nice to see you with your shirt the correct way it must be all those late nights great video as always my friends carnt wait until the next one

A very thorough video Will. Nothing like going home smelling of gear oil :)
One Auto, thank you! I Appreciate the feedback. It's the worst isn't it lol gives the shop that true shop smell it's a pleasant blend after the initial smell hahaha 😂

Robert Schumacher thank you, it's appreciated. I'm thankful as well
Excellent. Do you do a little dance of joy, when you use the new lift? That equipment is almost half the job... thx for sharing. ☺
R. E. Hill I do 👍 😋 done many of these on the ground. use good tall jack stands. Proper preparation will make this job go a lot smoother even on a lift the tools used make up a big part of the job, mind set is even greater I believe. but yes 😉 happy dance
excellent job. nice tricks.. thanks for this tutorial video.🔩🔧🔩👍👍
Another great video and narration!!!
Robert Hoffmann thank you appreciate the feedback! 👍

Instead of a rag, use a box end wrench around a ring gear bolt, butt it up against the case, and rotate the yoke. Comes right out.
good job Will, thanks for sharing. cheeeeeeeeers
Very very good video!!

Well done, good vid, i dig it, subscribed
Can you help me? I was replacing my seals in my dana 35 axle and accidentally scraped the orange ring off. What do I do now?
I can’t for the life of me hammer in the new axle seals. I have extensions and hammered the crap out of it. Any tips on getting the seals in?
Exceptional!
Good info keep it up
hi
in min 18:00, you used kind of grease or ... for seal. what's that? please explain to me.
very very nice one will!!

Ahhh, the smell of a differential. Nothin' worse. lol. Thanks for another great vid. ~
Duncan MacKenzie I agree ☝️ however it keeps the repair shop smell alive. Friday a customer stopped by, came in and the first thing he said was, I love that smell!! 🙈🙄😳lol
Great Job...Thank You..
great job
Great video again. I see you are a great fan of "Brake Cleaner".. loool
Thank you! yes brake cleaners is our best friend in this field lol :) many purposes
lol I like the hanging jokes
K S lol 😂 I cracked myself up with that one ☝️
What are the odds lmfao. nice video. Excellent channel name as well.
What's the average lifespan of front hubs??
John R it all depends really, road conditions, driving habits, town miles vs highway to many to call. However what I worry about more is removing and reinstalling
There is no reason to remove the axle nuts. The axle and hub assembly can come off as one unit to save time and effort.
Thank you..
"click"... perfect.
Nice
Thx

Is this an A TECH JOB?
Best advice : lube your shaft guys! 😉
Nice video, Thanks! You really should be using a mask of some sort when you're cleaning out and blowing rust, etc. around. You'll thank me later!
