    I like that Ventus 😁 Thanks for another review. You have a great way of describing products, not like most TH-camrs who usually talk endlessly about tech specs. This is like a friend telling a story. Appreciated!

      Couldn’t have done the video without you! Thank you for the encouragement. I just try to share what I’d want to hear

    Great video Neal, I have the Ventus and really love it. I like the idea of the Vario mainly because it has a little more belly room. On a side note I also have the NEBO and it’s my go to jacket. Take Care

      Thanks Warren! I really like the Vario. I wear it a ton. I’ve been wearing the NovaUL this winter. I’m planning to hike the JMT this summer and going to bring it for those cold mornings

    Great video Neal. I have the Ventus and waiting to see if the Vario will be offered during 12 Days of Christmas. I research like crazy. I plan to use it as an in camp piece along with and everyday grab and go. God Bless

      Thank you Warren! I really like the Vario. I find myself wearing it about 60% of the time in the winter. Sometimes I'm wearing my Patagonia Nano Puff and other times my OV Nova UL. Going on a hike tomorrow and I'll be wearing my Nova UL since we'll be starting at 2,000 feet elevation and going up to 6,000 for the summit

    Awesome video! I assumed that the Vario was designed to fit as an outer layer for Ventus. Have you tried wearing them together? Thanks!

      Thanks Kevin! I haven't tried wearing them together. I was wearing my Vario today and it was misting/light raining and I was impressed again at how it kept me dry on my 10 min walk. I wouldn't call it a rain jacket but super impressed at the versatility of this jacket!

    The Outdoor Vitals team uses their own gear and have a number of videos of their actual backpacking trips. I think that they definitely understand how to make great products.
    I first bought the Vario as a lighter insulation layer to replace a 17 oz puffy jacket. I haven't had to use it much but it is very light weight and seems to have reasonable warmth for cool, but not cold, temps (maybe around freezing).
    I just recently bought the Ventus as an active layer - to wear when starting out on cool mornings. I have tested it and it is warmer than the 14 oz merino hoodie that I had been using. While out on a hike in 40 degrees with snow, I wore the Ventus with a light shirt and actually had a light sweat while hiking. I tried to vent through the pits which did help a little. When I stopped for lunch, I did get a bit cold so I threw on my rain jacket and I was very comfortable. The Ventus does fit tight so you definitely need to go by their sizing chart.
    Having both is a good option with great flexibility on backpacking trips. I think that wearing both will provide very good insulation when it does get cold. Together, they pack down small and light, saving almost a pound over my previous layering options.

      Great summary! I wear my Vario on a regular basis. Hopefully it will warm up and I'll be using it less

    I used my ventis on a recent 5 day bp trip across the Olympic mountains. Loved it! But I want the Vario too. Why not have both!?

      I say both! They both have a different use and are great! I use my Vario weekly and same with my Ventus.

    Thanks buddy. You just answered all my questions except for 1. What size are the jackets you’re wearing?

    • @NealBenson
      @NealBenson  ปีที่แล้ว

      My bad! I'm wearing size Medium. On the Vario the only change I would consider is to get the long in the sleeves

  • @ksspang

    the Vario is made to be warmer, is it your experience that that's true? I have the ventus but I like the idea of having something for a bit colder weather with the bonus of having the pockets but I don't want to spend the money if it's not that different

    • @NealBenson
      @NealBenson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's warmer. It's hard to make an apple to apples comparison because I typically wear the Ventus when I'm hiking or outdoors and the Vario when I'm walking my son to school or wear it around town. The pockets are the game changer for me. And having a full zip make it worth it.
