    Actually, the music in the edited version was more emotional and captured the moments better. While the director's cut was awesome in putting back the deleted scenes that should have been in the movie in the first place, the music sucked ass royally. Being from that period when it first came out in 83, right after Matt Dillon's "Over the Edge", this captured the emotion extremely well. I agree that the Director's cut is hella better, but the audio blending was horrific in the director's cut.

      i can't agree witcha more, bud... i hope enough of us would sound this to Coppola for him to then RE-SCORE this more complete cut of the movie. it deserves a better scoring. and i do think the original score of the theatrical cut was much better.

    The novel has been read by three generations in my family. My father and mother both read it. My father when it first came out. He was a "greaser" not in T-Town"Tulsa, Oklahoma" like the book but in the City "Oklahoma City". He was a "greaser" way before it came out. He related to it and it even helped make him a better person and helped my mom (while she was dating him) understand him better. When I showed my son a pic of his grandfather's high school yearbook pic, he loved it and loved knowing he was a greaser and not a Soc.

    I prefer the newer version, and most of the new music choices, but in some scenes I find myself really missing Carmine Coppola's original score, like the lead up to the rumble. The original's orchestral piece playing as they pump themselves up for the fight is so much more ominous and built more tension than the replacement surf music the new version has. And the scene where Dally dies? Same problem. The surf music took all the emotion out of his death. However some of the scenes definitely benefit from the new music.

    • @owenwexler7214
      @owenwexler7214 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      randy25rhoads that fucking surf music during Dally’s death scene. Took all the weight and gravity out of that scene. Simply changing the music turned it from a tragic, emotional, and pivotal event to “just something that happens”. What were they thinking?
      So glad the version on TH-cam Movies is the original version with the original score.

    When you set out to make your video, did you say to yourself "I'll do it for Johnny!"?
    🙂
    I so strongly agree with you.
    The Outsiders is my favorite film, flat out.
    I grew up with this movie, it came out when I was in school, and I had just recently read the book.
    Loved the movie right away, but like you, felt it was missing something...
    I've always hated the overly dramatic score as well. The music during the rumble, for instance-
    An exciting scene, but the score would be more fitting for a funeral, or grieving for a lost puppy.
    Decades later, I discovered the "Complete Novel" version, same way you did, in a bargain bin for $3.99.
    I was thrilled, and not at all disappointed.
    If recommending to a friend, it's one of the few director's cuts that I'd suggest above the original.
    I greatly appreciate your work here in presenting the difference, though I don't think that I dislike the theatrical release as much as you do.
    I grew up with the original, and there's a certain amount of nostalgia attached to that, but I love the Complete Novel version so much more.
    Thank you for this-
    Stay gold, dude.

  • @VegasDannyReturns
    @VegasDannyReturns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just watched the uncut version and while I definitely agree that added scenes are great - the original score is just so much better! Watch the rumble scene....the build up of drama that the original score builds is far superior to the random rock and roll music that Coppola retro fits in his version - it doesn’t fit the scene. It’s also poorly mixed. It drowns out the dialogue.

    • @VegasDannyReturns
      @VegasDannyReturns 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rocking Horse I mean the difference is barely a few minutes of scenes that don’t bring a great deal to the film. I think it’s good that they have been added but not needed. The film score however is crucial to the tone and atmosphere of the film - particularly in the final fight scene between the two gangs.

    Also to make sure that you do see the ‘Complete Novel’, the opening credits come before the actual film starts

My parents read it when it first came out. Yes I am close to 50 lol. It's one of those topical stories that resonate throughout generations. So one day when you have kids, introduce it to them when you fell they are old enough.

    Wow.. couldn’t disagree more with you on many of your points.
    I had no problems with the original. I appreciated the directors cut and the extra scenes were nice but the rockabilly music was terrible. Especially in the climactic Dally death scene. The original score fit the movie so much better and was done by Coppola’s father, Carmine.
    It’s funny you say that the original version is “bad” and in the “bargain bin” at Walmart when it was the original version that has become iconic and generated a wealth of interest to warrant a “directors cut” version. And being in a bargain bin in Walmart has nothing to do with a films excellence but more with clearing out outdated media formats. That’s why in that same bin you’ll find “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Terminator” along with plenty of other iconic movies stuck in outdated formats.

    I had hopes that this would just be a discussion video and not a bashing video. There are so many problems that I have with this video and I'm going to voice them politely and hope that you can agree to disagree or just keep as food for thought. As someone who only recently became aware of the outsiders and hadn't read the book before watching the original version, your approach to the movie was extremely wrong. I understood what was going on and after watching it, picked up the book a few days later and read it in no time. After doing research, I later found out about the full novel version and purchased that as well and watched it. I do agree that the full novel version is better, no doubt about that, but your point of view seems to be a bit close minded. S. E. Hinton, the author, not only worked on the movie with Mr. Coppola, but helped produce it every step of the process. She also played the nurse that was in Dallas' hospital room towards the end. I also agree that the music changes they made were a great choice. I personally like Elvis and Jerry's music much better, as that is what they would've listened to. This is coming from a modern greaser and lover of S. E. Hinton's work. What I do have a problem with is how you bashed the opening credits and some other points you made. As you should know, a HUGE part of this movie and book is Ponyboy's fascination with the book Gone With The Wind. The opening credits is to play on the opening credits of the movie version of Gone With The Wind. Sure, the original version didn't give you every detail, but it did justice and made tons of money. It was very controversial back in the day so they did what they could and kept the extra bits. Twenty years later, they released the full novel version, because fans wanted more of the story. Also, socs aren't 'rich jocks' as you put it in your video. Socs are rich people in general. People who have money. And though you were right that they were friends, they're known as the Curtis Gang, just like Tim Shephard's Gang. The book and movie is narrated by Ponyboy who is only fourteen. Keep in mind that this is from a young teenagers perspective about kid greasers in a gang, dealing with rich kids who jump them on numerous occasions and the struggles of their lives. If he was older, this book and movie could've been a lot rougher. S. E. Hinton wrote this when she was 15/16, so it's pretty PG because of how young she was. As someone who is interested in film and has dabbled in acting as well, both versions were done amazingly, it's just your preference. I think you went way overboard by destroying the original version. Someone else could've benefited by watching it, even if you didn't enjoy it. Just like you say it came to you at the perfect time, that dvd could've been that for someone else. Not that I'm righteous or anything, but it seems that you haven't really dived into the background of this beloved story. I'm sorry if I'm wrong and you have, but this video just gave me the intention that you only see this book and movie at face value. Take this with a grain of salt or not at all. Besides, what would a greaser know about greasers :)

    I totally 100% agree with you when I first saw the uncut version or I should say the theatrical version I was sort of confused on why it started like that maybe I thought it was messed up so I took it out waited a couple seconds put it in again and I saw I had no proper introduction and when I finished watching the film I thought it was a pretty decent film I just didn't think it wasn't the best adaptation. But then overtime i found videos on TH-cam about the complete novel and hearing that it was better than the theatrical version so I decided to ask my dad for my birthday to get me the complete novel, what ended up happening was we ended up going to multiple stores I couldn't find it and I pretty much just forgot about it for for about 3 years and then recently my parents got me the complete novel on Blu-ray and I saw it and I loved it and now I 100% understand why people like the director's cut better than the cut version. I just want to say thank you so much for your views now I have no appreciation for the theatrical version recently my parents got me the complete novel on Blu ray and I saw it and I loved it and now I 100 percent understand why people like the director's cut better than the cut version I just want to say thank you so much for your views now I have no appreciation for the theatrical version and I have now have a better respect for the complete novel. I absolutely and wholeheartedly disagree with you. I never heard about the director's cut version until I watched your video informing us about it. I watched your video mainly because I had begun watching this film again tonight (had watched it countless times as a kid and more recently about 10 years ago on DVD) and was appalled when I suddenly realized that, not only was the flow of the film I know horribly interrupted by excessive material that only slows it down and spells out for you details that the cut version allows you to figure out yourself through suggestion--which is more effective--but also that the beautiful original soundtrack was gone and replaced with like a million Elvis songs and other hokey guitar strumming tunes that get monotonous after a while. After realizing this, I was infuriated because I had already watched about 1/3 of the film and did not want to see an ineffective version filled with forgettable music and excessive material. I wanted the awesome and moving original soundtrack accompanying and enhancing the mood and great performances. The director's cut version is interesting but nowhere nearly as effective and moving as the cut version. All those details spelled out in the director's cut version we figure out ourselves in the cut version; we don't need to be shown relationships taking place unless they have a compelling reason to be shown to us. The cut version is streamlined and flows better. The director's cut version drags and the absence of the orchestral score hurts the emotional impact of the film. If you play just that one scene where they reunite at the hospital, of course it's going to sound over-the-top because you're being shoved into forming an opinion on something based on merely simplistic observation of a clip and not observation as a viewer whom has been watching the events build and the emotion accumulate over the course of the film, which makes the supposedly over-the-top music anything but "over-the-top." In fact, it makes it quite fitting and compliments the situation and what the characters are feeling. The guitar strumming tune in the director's cut version is not ineffective but, to me, it doesn't improve the scene and actually injects a muted emotion that, by that point in the director's cut, has become too boring and monotonous to make us feel anything refreshing or new nor does it enhances the scene in any compelling way. In other words, the director's cut version sucks hairy cow balls. The cut version with the glorious original score is wondrous.

      Definitely! I'm 40 years old, and I grew up watching/loving this (cut version) movie. Hadn't seen it in MANY years, then one day it was on at a buddy's house. I arrived during the scene where Johnny runs into the burning church, and I was like (Emelio! jk) 'I love this movie!' then I immediately noticed something was WAY OFF. This is a DRAMATIC moment, so why does the music imply that the characters are about to 'catch some serious waves, and hang 10, bra'? Until that day I didn't even know that another version EXISTED. I had to go find the original release just to 'cleanse my palate' of the sour taste that version left behind. GENUINELY surprised that some people prefer the new version. I just can't "hang 10" with the beach party music during EMOTIONAL scenes, I feel like that music distracts from the impact of what's being shown.

The score is lush, and goes with the drama of youth...The open sequence reads like a playcard. I think you're way off.

    Sorry, don't agree at all.
    The original version imo, is the better movie. I didn't read the book as a kid, before I saw the movie, and picked up in minutes who was who and what was generally going on. Mind you I was like 7-8 years old the first time I saw the movie back in the 80s. The new version does add more scenes, but some of them add nothing to the movie, and just adds to the run time.
    Also the music in the new version is God awful!
    The surfing music that starts during the Church fire scene feels completely out of place. Same goes for the music during Dally's death. The original score fit the tone of the movie far better. He'll, some of the scenes in the new cut, the surfing music is so loud you can hardly her the characters speaking their lines. I literally just watched both version yesterday, and hated the new version, because the music completely those off the tone of the movie.

So after class I talked to my teacher, telling her of the two different versions of the film, where the Coppola version was more true to the book. I then asked her if it would be alright if I brought the “Complete Novel” version to school, so that I, and my fellow classmates could enjoy a much better version of the film, and analyze the similarities and differences, more in-depth if you will, and obviously she said “yes”. So once again, thank you for introducing to me the better version of the film. And also thanks for helping me get out of one day of summarizing the book and the movie (seeing that the Coppola version is longer). :)
