Desert locales are my favorite. I fell in love with them after I visited Badlands National Park for the first time. There is just something about the desolation that is just so beautiful in my mind.
I lived on San Bernardino for a year and I never visited any natural places. Kicking myself now! My favorite part of this video was the tunnel. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for visiting my home town of California City and the surrounding area. The big parking lot at Red Rock Canyon is called Red Cliffs. I wish I would have seen you there. I would have directed you to Nightmare Gulch. Only open from July 1 to February 1 because of bird of prey nesting the other seven months.
New to your channel but really enjoying it and have learned a lot from you because I’ve just started living full time in my SUV. One thing you failed to mention is that the Pacific Crest Trail goes right through the Vasquez Rocks. My only time I’ve been there was on my pct thru hike in 2019. Loving your channel thank you!
I would like to know the geology of the rock formations, looks like they were pushed up maybe from some volcanic activity many many years ago, very cool
As an Angelino, I think you did a great job finding these! My family got a piece of California City during that speculation. Still have it. It’s worthless but a great story to tell 😂
You will find other amazing rock formations like Vasquez along virtually every other transvserse fault line in California. I have been to very many. The most beautiful of them all is the entire Angeles Crest which ends at Mormon Rocks near Hesperia. At those rocks, three transverse faults dead end and have created some of California's most accessible and phenomenal rocks. 34°18'60.0"N 117°29'39.1"W
Some interesting spots I've never been to! I haven't spent alot of time in south California. I do love the unique rock formations and I love the fact that the dry desert air desicates and preserves old buildings,,etc. I'm looking forward to seeing your Baja travels,,I remember my Uncles and older cousins talking about the Baja 1000 and Baja 500 off road races when I was a little kid. I've had a fascination with and interest in Baja ever since. I remember a great article Ed Abbey wrote about the place ,,,I think it was in Outside magazine when I was a teen
Vazquez rocks was my "playground" as a little kid my mom would sleep in the car while I played. 😬😂Grew up to become a rock climber, backpacker and now sleep in my truck and hike all over the place, my up-bringing worked out all right👍🏻
Look up a video by Huell Howser when he went thru Burro Smith Tunnel and look up his many other videos of California. It is almost endless but will give you a lot of sources for interesting places to travel to.
I loved this one. I have driven by these areas dozens of times on my way to the sierras, and each time on the way home, I say, “ Next time we are going to stop and check that place out “, and we never do. Thanks for showing me what I’ve been missing.
I'm impressed you found about the Burro Schmidt place, I've never heard of it. Yes, boon docking in most of California is not that available as it is in the less populated states.
Wow Amazing All I could do drive by the tunnel last Dec. I am 74, solo traveler, hiker and grandma, so I am cautious but itches me to death every time when I see some places like that. Kudos young man I am part time suv nomad, getting ready to revisit The red rock canyon next week the to the Wave near Page Az. Wishing some day I may run into you Thanking you always
Hi! Tristan. You left out part of the history of Vasquez rocks. How it got it's name. In 1874 Tiburcio Vasquez, one of California’s most notorious bandits, used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. His name has since been associated with this geologic feature.
Tristan - You asked about places to visit in the southeastern California area - I have 2. 1 - Manazanar internment camp, where Japanese-Americans were held during WW2. It's on US 395 south of Bishop and north of Lone Pine. Almost mystical feel of sadness about the place. 2 - Grandview campground, Inyo National Forest, east of Bishop. Camp on a clear spring night, and awake to the sun hitting the peaks of the Sierra to your west - an amazing way to start any day. It's been several years since I've been there, but I don't remember any fees. Keep up the good work - loving your adventures.
I always enjoy your videos but this one brought back memories from the 60’s and 70’s when I lived in So Cal. A friend and I drove out to Randsburv when we were supposed to be somewhere else on an adventure, mom found out and I got in trouble. In the 70’s I got suckers into the hype for California City and bought a lot there. Keep up with your videos, my wife and I both really enjoy them, especially your laidback style of presentation.
I grew up in San Diego and we used to spend almost every holiday out in the desert at Ocotillo Wells I love the desert this time of year the cactus should be in full bloom...just gorgeous.
When I was a kid we used to go out to Red Rock Canyon on weekend drives, and my Mom would take pictures. It wasn't a state park yet in those days. Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park is another place I remember from my childhood, and from seeing it in dozens of movies and TV shows. There used to be a movie set fort there, I think it was supposed to be in India, but it's gone now, when the county turned the area into a park they tore it down. I always had to laugh to see Vasquez Rocks as India, or Africa, or in Sci Fi as an alien world. But the thing I most remember it for on TV was the Outer Limits episode The Zanti Misfits, where a criminal on the lam and his girlfriend break into an area set aside as a penal colony for alien criminals, and are killed by them, in Vasquez Rocks. The Zantis looked like hamster-sized ants with anthropomorphic faces, and reminded me of the bugs in the Game of Cootie. Seems to me I've seen Red Rock Canyon in movies, too.
Tristan, We've visited these places with our grandkids...good memories! I know you can't see everything, but right across the highway from Red Rock Canyon you would have seen more interesting red rock formations and lots of beautifully grotesque hoodoos. Thanks for the trip with you! I love the Mojave too.💕
If you much hiking in the mountains out west one can't help but marvel at the determination or obsession of the miners to find something of value in the mountains.
Wow first time I was actually having a panic attack watching your adventures!! I'm way to claustrophobic for that tunnel lol. I had to keep pausing to catch my breath but thanks for taking me there!!!
Hi Tristan! When you asked if "we" should go in to the tunnel I was saying, "Nooo! Nooo! ", then "we" went in. I knew we would! Haha!! It was pretty cool. Thank you for another great video! 👍 Take care! Karen
Oh man. Totally tickled that you did those famous slanted rocks. Passed them a million times growing up on our way to backpacking in the Sierras. If you haven't already, I sure hope you do the Alabama Hills some time, right in front of Mt. Whitney near Lone Pine in the CA desert. A thousands movies were filmed there too. The last time I recognized the place was when I was recently re-watching Gladiator. In one scene Russell Crowe is riding a horse there as his character is attempting to return to Rome from Africa lol. You can even see Mt. Whitney in the background. So many movies have been filmed there--along with car commercials!
I grew up in Cal City. It was a nice little thriving community in the 70s and 80s. The real estate scams and the lack of opportunities for young people hurt its development. I was back last year, and even though there are more businesses and more people, it's a depressing place to be. Red Rock Canyon, though, is one of my favorite places on Earth. ❤ Thank you for visiting and showing them to your audience.
Another awesome 😎 video. Gotten to really love the desert 🏜 scenes because my favorite colors besides black are all the neutral colors of the sand & cliffs you feature in your desert trips. GREAT JOB, Tristan. 👍🏻
Again you have found some interesting and somewhat obscure places to visit. Enjoy watching all your videos, have been watching for a couple of years. Keep up the great work!
You do a fantastic job of bringing all these sites to life! My favorite parts are when you show your campsites. Thanks for these informative videos of your adventures!
Thanks for the video. I have always wondered what California City was, in our travels to Las Vegas from N California, I have seen the sign for California City off hwy 58 near Mojave and wondered what it was.
Nice vid. My oldest relative told me to stay out of mine shafts and small airplanes lol,, we lost a few to both. keep on adventuring and sharing with us.
Way Cool! I particularly liked Burro Schmidt tunnel, and his cabin... I noticed he had electricity(or anyway, there was an electrical outlet and wiring! at his cabin. I can emphasize with Burro, I have occasionally obsessively completed a project when there was no longer any need for the final achievement. Thanks for sharing...
Been there (the tunnel) is amazing and awesome. Love California, been here most of my life and never get tired. Always something to explore and great diversity of climate and such.
The tunnel is the only one of those places I've never been to. Cool. I think a lot of the Randsburg folks work in Ridgecrest during the week - not sure though. My grandmother used to hang out there a lot, have friends from there and that's what she said. And we were in Palm Desert yesterday for an appointment, so you did a loop beginning north of us and around to go back out the 10 through Coachella Valley. Nice day.
Some how missed this post last week... That tunnel. Odd ya said. I'll roll with that. Wow. But the future knows his name so... Really cool and enjoyable video!
More desert places to add to my list. The funny thing about Vasquez Rocks is I just watched the Big Bang episode last night! Super cool. Thanks for sharing!
Love Vazques Rocks! Right in my backyard. You can also hike a small portion of the PCT there. I need to check out Burro Schmidt's Tunnel at some point!
All of it was an interesting video. The Vasquez Rocks were horizontal first and were created by uplift since that area is so geographically active. They look like smaller versions of the Flat Irons in Colorado. I look forward to your next adventure. Drive safe and have fun. 🇺🇸
Great video, I didn't Ike the cave because I am claustrophobic but the area where all the film& music videos was beautiful. I think the LOST IN SPACE back in the 60s film some there.0h have a safe trip .Love you Brother and share your Love to all.
That cave was very interesting. Hard to believe someone could live in the desert for so long. My favorite was the rock formations near LA. With the mountains in the background, so pretty. Thank you for sharing places that I may not be able to get to.
Awe so cool, California City we spent many years there with family and friends camping, riding motorcycles and having a ball..Ransburg being so close was always a day trip. We use to live about 25 minutes south of Vasquez Rocks spent time there. Love this video thank you for sharing!
Tristan, thanks for another trip back in time👍👍🤗😳. I've been wanting to see Vasquez rocks...lots of westerns were filmed there same as Tucson, Arizona area. I'll look up Burro Schmidt... amazing what a determined person can accomplish. Take care.
Hello Tristan & another unique and varied take on the desert; I appreciate this as the weather here in Pa has been miserable! Your research prior to your visitations is impressive. Viva la desert.
Wow! You were right in my neck of the desert! Vasquez rocks is very iconic, and a wonderful place to grow up by. We live in Palmdale, and are pleasantly surprised to see you by us...and thankful that you visited a few of the unique things by us. If you would've stop by when it was a little warmer...we have quite the abundance of poppies that will be in full bloom soon. I've heard that a little north of us, it's starting to bloom a little off the northern portion of hwy 138, heading towards interstate 5...enjoy the videos, and the amount of research that you do, while visiting all these places. A great service to all of us viewers! Thank you, stay safe!
Vasquez Rocks are lifted up like that due to tetonic uplift, aka San Andreas Fault. Old Sierra Hwy is a pretty drive through old rural California if you have the time to drive it instead of Hwy 14. Pear Blossom Hwy/138 from Palmdale/Lancaster towards San Bernadino is a pretty drive as well. The Mormon Rocks are another interesting rock formation to explore. Just south of 138 is a road that runs right along the San Andreas Fault with interesting geologic and tetonic features. If you look for the PBS channel for LA on TH-cam they have several cool videos of the whole area.
I enjoyed "Burro" Schmidt and Randsburg's footage. Man, you've been everywhere...😎 I've been to Boston, Charleston, Dayton Louisiana, Washington, Houston Kingston, Texarkana, Monterey, Ferriday Santa Fe, Tallapoosa, Glen Rock Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa Boise, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake Grand Lake, Devil's Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake I've been everywhere, man Across the deserts bare, man I've breathed the mountain air, man Of travel I've had my share, man I've been everywhere
Very cool seeing areas a little more local to me. The cabin at the tunnel was occupied up until maybe 10-15 years ago. Huell Howser of California's Gold visited in his video tv show. Also there is a fantastic petroglyph site on the China Lake Base that allows tours through the museum in Ridgecrest periodically.
We LOVED that tunnel when we went not too long ago. Agree though... doing that by hand was insane. Read that he developed problems w/ his abdominal muscles and couldn't stand up straight in his later years. It certainly looked that way from pictures I found. The inside of the cabin (the smaller building, the larger is said to be caretaker quarters) is amazing inside. Covered with really really old newspapers, packaging material and whatnot. Worth it to take a peek if possible. But yeah... the first part of your trip here is basically what we did earlier last year. 😅 It's such a fantastic place if you're a fan of mining history. Didn't know about the rocks though so... onto the list they go! Thanks!
I really enjoy your inquisitive explorations and content. You go places most would not but that gives us who are less bold, the chance to see what we never would have. Thanx!
Thanks for the interesting / eclectic travels, today. Over 13,000 views & > 1.4k likes! You've been a great diversion from the the day's news. Thanks again Tristan!
Lots of interesting and beautiful places on this one, especially Red Rock. But that mine shaft the guy spent so many years digging was a little creepy! 😳
Very cool. The rock formations and the small town. The cave is creepy though, what a sad life for that man that carved it out. He must have been a lonely man. Thanks for sharing.
There is definitely some weird stuff in the California desert. But I enjoyed your video thank you for sharing the adventures. I spent lot of time around Palm Springs it's great area to Adventure in. Thank you for sharing!
When I saw the title I figured Vasquez rocks might be involved. Mormon rocks and fossil falls are pretty cool too. Snd yes Vasquez rocks is sand stone. It is such an other worldly feel there. Such interesting geology.
Have you been to Calico, near Barstow? Kinda touristy but pretty interesting. Look it up. I've seen Vasquez Rocks from the highway. I've past Ransburg on the way to Trona. Didn't know it was that cool. I'll have to stop there.
I love interesting rocks different shapes and the desert some of my favorite places to visit and enjoy thank you for taking me with you.

My first impression of the rocks was a Star Trek episode where Captain Kirk battled an alien lizard man...lol Thanks for your videos.
Thanks for visiting my home town of California City and the surrounding area. The big parking lot at Red Rock Canyon is called Red Cliffs. I wish I would have seen you there. My husband always wants to go to California City when we drive through… I may just have to agree next time 😘 thx

Are you able to build a simple weekender cabin on your land? Maybe grow certain desert bush plants?
@@chaoticature Legally, yes. No water or power, but a cabin can work. Maybe someday!

The Star Trek rocks have been on my bucket list from watching the original series in the 60's. .
Definitely a thumbs up for this video 👍
The photography group with the reflector at Vasquez Rocks made me chuckle every time I saw them in the background.
I'm impressed you found about the Burro Schmidt place, I've never heard of it. Yes, boon docking in most of California is not that available as it is in the less populated states.

Interesting places. Wow 38 years. That's focus and determination. California City, interesting place. Stay safe 💕

The towering red rock spires are stunning. I’m a claustrophobic scaredy cat, so I could never go into the tunnel, but I enjoyed your filming it.
Loved this one. A series of places that probably are known or visited by mostly locals. Thanks.
If you much hiking in the mountains out west one can't help but marvel at the determination or obsession of the miners to find something of value in the mountains.

Love Red Rock Canyon. I’ve found something completely spectacular and brand new to me every time I’ve gone
I was a graphic design student in the late 60s. I used to do photo shoots at Vasquez Rocks. Occasionally I had to share space with film companies.
Hello Tristan & another unique and varied take on the desert; I appreciate this as the weather here in Pa has been miserable! Your research prior to your visitations is impressive. Viva la desert.

Thanks for checking out Vasquez Rocks. I've driven by there many tines but never stopped.
Vasquez Rocks are lifted up like that due to tetonic uplift, aka San Andreas Fault. Old Sierra Hwy is a pretty drive through old rural California if you have the time to drive it instead of Hwy 14. I enjoyed "Burro" Schmidt and Randsburg's footage. Man, you've been everywhere...😎
I've been to Boston, Charleston, Dayton
Louisiana, Washington, Houston
Kingston, Texarkana, Monterey, Ferriday
Santa Fe, Tallapoosa, Glen Rock
Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa
Boise, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake
Grand Lake, Devil's Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake
I've been everywhere, man
Across the deserts bare, man
I've breathed the mountain air, man
Of travel I've had my share, man
I've been everywhere
Very cool seeing areas a little more local to me. The cabin at the tunnel was occupied up until maybe 10-15 years ago. Huell Howser of California's Gold visited in his video tv show. Also there is a fantastic petroglyph site on the China Lake Base that allows tours through the museum in Ridgecrest periodically.
I saw an electrical outlet in the video at the cabin. HMMM?
We LOVED that tunnel when we went not too long ago. Agree though... doing that by hand was insane. Read that he developed problems w/ his abdominal muscles and couldn't stand up straight in his later years. It certainly looked that way from pictures I found. The inside of the cabin (the smaller building, the larger is said to be caretaker quarters) is amazing inside. Covered with really really old newspapers, packaging material and whatnot. I always look forward to your posts! Thank you
This is one of my favorite videos of yours
Good stuff MrT I hav driven by most of these places en route to more popular spots in Cali👍🏻
I really enjoyed this video. Keep up the great work!
Awesome desert places….thank you for sharing.
Great job again Tristan, i thought you will end up in alabama hills not too far from vasquez rocks.
Awesome video.thanks for sharing.
Thanks Tristan, beautiful and never heard of these places.
Another great video Tristan! I enjoy both your channels Tenkara & exploring! Take care, Steve @Blackflycreations
The desert seems like a great place to go and see. Thanks for sharing.
If you ever get to southern Colorado, Stonewall, CO rock formations are similar but different from Vasquez Rocks. Interesting.
Lots of interesting and beautiful places on this one, especially Red Rock. But that mine shaft the guy spent so many years digging was a little creepy! 😳
Awesome video! I really love the driving shots from the drone. I'm excited to see where you visit in Southwestern Arizona.
Excellent video thanks for sharing your time
Another fantastic SUVRVing episode! Safe travels Brother.
Btw, Hope Cassie is doing well.
Interesting day. Thanks for taking us along.
Very cool. The rock formations and the small town. The cave is creepy though, what a sad life for that man that carved it out. He must have been a lonely man. Thanks for sharing.
Depends on how much gold he found while digging it! Lol Gold can buy alot of fun and chase loneliness away🥳
A burro and a horse make a Mule, just sayin’. Love your adventures!
Awesome work Tristin. I absolutely love the eastern Sierras, especially the town of Lone Pine. See ya around brother ✌🏼🏔
You find the most interesting places! Thank you 😊
What a neat list. Thank you for doing the research. It has been below freezing for 4 days straight here so I am a bit jealous...
California city reminds me of the streets I saw driving past moapa valley or lucerne valley
always love your videos.. but gotta say - I hyperventilated through the entire burroSchmidt tunnel. 😂😂 ... beautiful desert landscapes!
Weird tunnel. I've seen photos of Vasquez rocks before but had no idea what they were called or where they were. Safe travels.
Very interesting! I believe there is a good chance there is a large DUMB at the location of CA city. Esp. since there is an AF base next to it.
There is definitely some weird stuff in the California desert. But I enjoyed your video thank you for sharing the adventures. I spent lot of time around Palm Springs it's great area to Adventure in. Thank you for sharing!
I was hoping you would go north up 395 a little more and visit Alabama Hills, it's an underrated place to explore IMO.
Excellent. Thanks for showing Desert area *♡~
I'll have to stop there.
always enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.
