And don't forget that the 12 weeks of unpaid leave includes any time you take for appointments or pregnancy complications. I had a horrific pregnancy, almost died multiple times, spent a total of 10 weeks hospitalized before giving birth to a premature baby so small that they literally didn't even register on the preemie percentage scale. I gave birth at 10:30 p.m. on a Thursday, which also happened to be the final day of my 12 weeks. I was told to report to the office Friday or be fired. I got a lawyer and ended up getting a few extra weeks, but it was nowhere near with time. It's been about 12 years and my kid and I both still suffer long-term health issues from it, and I decided not to have any more kids because I was terrified I'd have a similar experience, most my job and be homeless with my kids. Great work, America.
That's horrible! I fell at work during my pregnancy. I was an RN at the hospital where all my Drs were. Risk management was waiting when I got to the ER. Tried to fire me and take my insurance prior to delivery. Took years with a workers comp lawyer to get a settlement and a years of medical for my daughter and myself. She was born with a hip dislocation
In my country (the Netherlands) You have either 4 or 6 weeks before you give birth and 8 or 6 weeks after the birth. If your baby is premature, it will be extended with the number of days that you or your baby is in the hospital. If you get sick due to pregnancy, you will be paid your wage by the government. So your employer isn’t at ‘risk’ There are many more things that our government does. I’m sorry this happened to you. But lots and lots of countries make sure that mothers and fathers are taken care of. The USA has been incredibly behind and calls everything Europe (and other countries) do a form of communism. 😅
When children are deprived of parental attention during the first six months of life, some of them develop attachment problems and lose all capacity for compassion and empathy. This, to me, sounds like a self perpetuating problem.

At least I live in new york where we do have access to paid family leave. For all of our issues, NY has some good labor laws compared to most of the country.
Spanish here - In spain we have one of the shortest paid family leaves in Europe. We have mandatory maternity and paternity leave that is both paid, and tax-free. On top of that, there is additional "lactation" time that mothers can choose to shorten their work day or to take it together for I believe it's 3 additional weeks of paid leave. On top of that there are state-funded nurseries you can leave your kid in when you go back to work. These are all natality-promoting initiatives : the idea is that if the government supports parents in "derisking" having a child, then more families will choose to have them. A very different approach to, you know, forced birth.

For context Dak and His girlfriend have been together for 7 years and have since happily welcomed into the world a healthy baby. And Carton hasn’t changed a bit
I've always thought it's odd people talk about only women getting paid time off after a baby. I comprehend it's extra important for a little while for a mother to recover after a stressful, painful birth, but I think fathers should have some paid time off as well. Having a brand new baby is a stressful and emotional time for both parents after all, and both parents could use the time together to figure out all the stuff they need to figure out.
If we did that then there would be bipartisan support for it and nobody in politics wants that. They want to draw lines around issues to exclude some people. That way, there's something to badmouth the other side about, for both sides.
Yes lets force women to have children then make them go right back to work. Its all about the company and control over its workers and especially women in America. It takes time for a women to heal after a birth plus they should have time to spend with their child. But it should be there choice if they happen to get pregnant then it should be between the doctor and the womens decision especially if it isn't safe. Its a health issue. Now they want to ban the pill so basically its about their religion onto a women and their own choice to make. If they actually cared about kids then they would create laws to help the women with childcare who might be poor or even materinity leave. Nope get back make the corporation and CEOs rich while stealing your money and resources. Its a sick system.

So far as I'm aware, the EU minimum is set by the 1992 Pregnant Workers Directive at 14 weeks. There is also a right to 2 weeks of paternity leave. Many countries grant more generous leave, but I don't think that they all offer 2 years. Portugal, for example, apparently offers up to 150 days, paid at 80%. Even Sweden, which is one of the most generous, seems to grant a total of 480 parental leave days. Some countries (such as Germany) offer up to 3 years, during which time one can claim state benefits. In Germany, much of that leave can be taken later in the child's life (before they're 8).
