I took the leap to start my own small shop based out of my garage. Seeing these videos gets me super excited and motivated. Thank you so much for making them! Please dont stop!
Dude you built your own shop?! What a dream come true. I'm currently 19, I work at the Post Office, I live with my parents and im getting into woodworking, I just baught my first set of power tools (craftsmen) and im getting a planer and table saw next tomorrow from home depot (Im thinking dewalt for the more expensive heavy duty items like that). This video is such an inspiration to someone just starting out, makes me wanna set my goals beyond just selling a few custom high end furniture pieces.
I know this individual, I know his family, and I know his work. I teach Construction Trades in a High School bout 45 miles from him. He is a resource and a trusted individual that I can interact with. he's real and honest. So to those that have issues, he is not one of them, his advice is worthwhile to my students. God Bless Texas.
Knowing this story is important. He could have been a 1 hit wonder. Hard work and hustling will keep you afloat but his man stand went viral. I think a lot of people would have stopped there. It’s the same with musicians that have a hit song. They keep pumping out garbage trying for that hit. This kid hit gold and took that and ran. He’s a treasure. Fun to watch him grow and still have struggles and successes.
It's amazing how you started with little knowledge and have worked your way up to where you are now. I hope to be growing like that one day. Thanks for the information and incentive to grow.
You keep your head down and took risks that few people could stomach. You deserve the success that you now have. America is strong and always will be with people like you at the helm. Good bless you and your crew.
I was walking through a lumber mill and needed some black cherry so I talked to the millwright and asked him how much the boards cost. He said “the more you buy the cheaper they get” So I told him to load them onto the truck until they were free.
Thanks buddy i needed to hear this im starting out and 101 thoughts are going through my head, its amazing how you progressed ,wish i started many years ago, thanks for the inspiration. From South Africa.
This is a good motivational video and you basically described decades of my life where I did what I wanted regardless of not knowing yet how to do it. It is also amazing the things you discover that you never knew existed. Especially today with the internet, it is much easier to find information you need to move along.
Wow! Just wow! Excellent video Ryan. Being retired I have absolutely no desire to grow like you have but I sure congratulate you on your success. You are very motivating as well. Can I ask what woods you used to make the Texas cutting board?
Always inspiring! I started cnc work before you, at school, and occasionally kick myself for not having double down on it to get closer to where you're at. 17 years later I've worked on 3 continents and wore so many hats it's been an amazing life in many ways, but yet another Christmas broke asf is shaping to be... sales is my least favorite thing, there might be some self-sabotage at play too... very struggling to find out. However it is clear now that focus on one product first is super important, you've done so well, thanks for sharing all your data and behind the scenes !
If you ever have any scraps me and the other vets I teach wood turning to can use anything you can part with. We are always running out of wood and being % disabled vet I do not make all that much since I buy everything that is needed. Thanks
This video and you are very inspirational for those who are wondering if they can start or are worried about starting their journey into woodworking. It's great that you show where you started and how you got here. You should be proud of your accomplishments, and your parents must be proud of your accomplishments. Keep sharing, keep looking forward, and thanks for sharing your knowledge and talent.
Great video! Definitely a smart move to make panels for cnc users! You are changing the industry for the home users! Btw- are you selling boxes of quality scrap wood for small projects? Depot and Amazon sell “blind boxes” of exotic wood scraps- it might be a great way to drum business at a smaller level ( including the home Lethe / wood turning user. )
This is so awesome. To have ambition and keep it alive is so important for growth. Also recognizing the potential of sales and feeding them is so important. This is a very inspiring video.
It's fun to see these behind the scenes of where you are today. Your operation reminds me a little of my time working in a RC model airplane plant in the mid 90s. Just out of college and before I got into my career field I worked at Great Planes, Urbana, IL. I learned almost every process in every department from grading wood thru the wood shop/mill thru packaging. It's interesting seeing each process during manufacturing. Great content!
Great job !! Love your enthusiasm! And love watching you go from small to so big and successful ! And hey , from someone who has worked on concrete for years , use the scooter more often to take the impact off your body running all over the shop ! Or roller skates 😂 Bravo !! Much more success to you ! 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
First of all a big thank you to you and every woodworker out there. In my opinion the secret sauce is to ask questions. There is no such thing as a dumb question, especially if you are a serious woodworker. Getting questions answered from seasoned professionals, in any industry, is the best way to become successful in that industry. So align yourself with people in your industry and become successful.
You need a bike bell on your scooter! I remember your shipping room from early on. The Fam Damily sitting around the living room matching labels to valets. That’s when I fell in love with your family and team. Are you going to offer the insert panels as stand alone pieces? I think that if I am going to mess up a piece during the inlay process, the male piece would be where it happens. For those not quite ready for the flap sander, you can get sanding mops that you put on your drill press or drill to do the same thing. Works great!
very impressive.. would you say the most difficult thing of this process is hiring a staff, payroll, healthcare, taxes, etc? I know going solo is wayy more easier to handle but obviously just 1 guy can only produce very little.
Love the success. You are no longer a woodworker, You are a business man. You no longer make wood products you make money. However, it seems like you love what you do whatever that may be. I'm a little to old to consider going where you are going but I can see your content being inspirational to a lot of younger people. My advise as an old guy, find something you love, get good at it and figure out a way to get people to pay you money for doing what you love,
Last year I was selling firewood. It was profitable. But exhausting. This spring I bought a sawmill and a bunch of wood shop tools. Right now I am just breaking even every month. Scraping by. Trying to find my niche market and product. Like you did. But like you, I am excited about it. I am living my dream.
Do you mind if I ask what heat tunnel you have? And what type of plastic (pvc, ldpe, etc) you use for the wrapping? I'm embarking on a nightmare sauce ride of heat sealing 100s of not-woodworking stuff I make and the heat gun is a lil janky and SLOOOOOW :P Cool video though - the giant vat of glue made me weirdly happy
awesome tour and good retrospective! - Would love a little bit of videos on sales actually a lot of times online nobody wants to hear sales so it almost sounds like a Catch-22
I have a big idea. A very big idea. Aside from a crummy old birdhouse I built in a woodshop class when I was a preteen, I have never done any woodworking in my life. I'm starting from as much of a bottom as you can get to. But man. If I build my idea to this one day, where I need a shop like this, I'll be so happy.

Yo man, i was looking to set up a little side Hussle here in Europe where i live, I already do some hand wood carving in my free time, But looking to pick up my first CNC machine that i can use to cut out and style chopping boards and decorative items etc.. What would be the best "first" CNC machine to buy that it is user friendly that would help me do the things i want? i do have plenty of space but i only have normal door way entrances to my current work shop. So it would need to be something that comes in a box that i need to put together, Any tips would be awesome.
For those of us starting out with something like a onefinity etc, would be good to get feeds and speeds by wood type in a chart to help figure out the maths. But + spindle = cut depth etc and speed. That would be super helpful. Not sure if it's already documented somewhere. Getting a foreman, bought some bits from bits and bits, but I'd have probably bought or would buy more in the future of your bits if feed and rates listed by machine type capability, as it would be quicker to deploy. Thanks for making the videos, always learning. Appreciate you.
Thank you much! What was the reasoning for going with Bits and Bits over my bits? You will not hurt my feelings, just want honest feedback so I can improve.
