How to learn 50+ vocab words a day

  • This is the method I used to learn over 50 vocab words a day and retain nearly all of them. Through repeating 3-4 times on a standard piece of lined paper per day, you'll learn about 48-64 words. I don't recommend you try more than 3-4 of these per day (about 30-45 minutes), but once you're comfortable with the method you can safely increase it to around 100 words per day.

    I did this method, but instead of vocab words, I wrote terms on one paper and their definitions on the other. It worked really well.

    All of the other papers are the same as the first, just with more words. The idea is that you end up with several papers, each with the top half filled with English words and the bottom filled with words in your target language, and then you're quizzing yourself on them once in each direction (English --> target, then target --> English).

    I have to do a unit of french per day to be able to successfully complete french 2 for this summer (each containing about 100 words), and I'm doing something similar.
    I write the lists down initially, and then I go back, look at the english words, and then translate them. When I mess up, I will put a dot on the paper, rewrite it, and move on. When I finish the list, I go back and take all of the words with the dots and practice only those. I continue until I can write all of the words, but I take the few that I had the most trouble with and put them on a list with all of the words I had trouble with.
    It's annoying, tedious, and difficult, but it works. I got myself into this mess, and I don't plan on giving up.

    Intervals are kinda up to you, depending on what you prefer, but I don't think there's some magic number. The idea though is to keep one interval soon after doing it, then another interval later on to bring it back to your memory. The more you use the vocabulary of course the better.

      This kind of learning is only a first step, to give the words a toehold in your long-term memory. You have to put the vocabulary to immediate use in your speaking and writing, or you won't retain it for long!

    Guys, I don't know what the hell this guy is talking about. But I have found two very effective techniques for memorizing words. (1) One is that you select some manageable number, say 10-40, and you go to google, find an image that captures the essence of the word to you, or use the snipping tool and paint to bring together different images into one, then you paste these images into a word document. You can print out a crapload of copies and keep writing the word above each image without looking until you can label the whole page from memory almost perfectly spelled several times in a row. It may take a few pages or may take up to 20 copies or more, but if you keep doing it, you will memorize them. Then you make sure you do it every day for like at least 10 days or so. By the third or fourth day you generally have the words memorized almost perfectly, so it may only require a page or two by that day to review, but it is essential to continue at this point until it is very heavily put into your brain. The disadvantage is that it takes paper, it takes time, it takes ink, it may be difficult to express some words with a single image, but the advantage is that you stick these words into your brain long term and bypass any translation problems because you are thinking in images not words. (2) Is also effective and is just fill in the blank method. Get an article or a bunch of sentences, and go through and put blank spaces wherever you want the word or phrase to be recalled. Next to the blank space, put parentheses with the mother tongue word equivalent next to the blank. Print out a shitload of copies of the blanks and keep filling it out until you can fill it out from memory, and repeat again for like 10 days in a row. The advantage with this is that you get the context, but it may be slightly harder to memorize without a picture. FINAL POINTS: Writing things down is essential. Daily review for a period of several days is essential. If you cannot memorize the whole list at once, just try to successfully fill in say 3 blanks at a time, then flip to a fresh blank page, and make sure you can do those 3 again and again, then try to do 3 more, then repeat, and keep building up until you can reproduce the whole thing. You will forget a lot for a while, several days most likely, but it will eventually stick with you as long as each day you get to the point where you can fill out the list perfectly at least once. Realistically, if you are able to dedicate about 1 hour to making a new list and memorizing it every day, perhaps up to 30 words or more, and if you can dedicate 1 hour to reviewing all the previous say 10 days needed to review, you should be able to rapidly acquire a shitload of vocabulary words, with context, by using these methods. One more point - keep one long list somewhere of all the vocabulary you have learned with dates indicating when the words were added to your system. Once you have solidly planted them in your head with 10 days or more of active recall, you will need to periodically just look through this list and passively ensure that you keep activating the words even for just a moment.

    Haha, you made my day, guy. Well, I think this works for beginners, kind of reading-writting or visual-kinesthetic learners and non-phonetic languages. Is said that each people learns of different ways. And I will have to add one thing, is learn about things that are around us. For example if somebody studies something related to business that person will have to learn vocabulary related with business and daily life. Languages have thousands of words that we have to choose some specific vocabularies and keep using in some way the words that we have learnt.

    -Wait 1+ hours
    -Take the test from the other way, Other Language => English. Add any missed terms to the next list you make.

  • @verisimilitudeteller

    Anki is a much better tool for this, because it's spaced repetition for review. Plus you can remove your native language from the process by starting with nouns and adding pictures rather than native language to learn the new words. For verbs and other abstract concepts you create sentences in Anki where the verb is left blank but the rest of the words give context clues as to which verb you're looking for.
    "The dog ________ down the street."

    • @ElaineDarlingtonBrown
      @ElaineDarlingtonBrown 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Prefer Flash Cards de Luxe - much easier to use and more flexible. Also, great advice is to never use single words on flash cards. Use in full sentences. Enhances knowledge of how words are used.

    • @verisimilitudeteller
      @verisimilitudeteller 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elaine DarlingtonBrown I think that depends on the word, the word "dog" for example isn't a tough concept. I'm not keen on using any English at all on my cards, as that's my native language. So one side has a picture of a dog and the other has the word in my target language, and another card makes me spell it. It creates multiple cards for each word.
      Words which are more conceptual like, "together", you absolutely need context and the best way to do that is to create a card with the full sentence visible but for the one word you want to learn.
      The sentence should be built using words you already know in your target language. Because I'm generating the sentence, the card, picking my own image and picking the audio for it, card creation becomes part of the learning process.
      And what's best is when you have those moments while reviewing of looking at a card and not "getting it" immediately... it's those moments when your brain is searching to find the connection that stronger connections are made.
      Fluent Forever by Gabriel Wyner really has Anki and language learning locked down. His book is great but he also has tutorial videos on card creation laying out pretty much what I've clumsily tried to explain here.

    This is the method I used to learn over 50 vocab words a day and retain nearly all of them. Through repeating 3-4 times on a standard piece of lined paper per day, you'll learn about 48-64 words. I don't recommend you try more than 3-4 of these per day (about 30-45 minutes), but once you're comfortable with the method you can safely increase it to around 100 words per day.
