You've got to give Keating credit - he spoke the truth, even when it didn't favour him.

Barry is absolutely brilliant here. It's great that he branched out into other creative fields. I love his "Film Noir" narrative. (The term means: "black film" in French) and is a TV trope, or genre of stylish crime dramas, set in the 1940s and '50s, aka the classic period. Whether works since then can be accurately classed as Noir is a subject of much debate among film critics, but the use of the backstabbing "double-cross" and drinking hard liquor is mandatory. And the monologues can be really cool, in a Bogart-esque or Sam Spade kind of way.
e.g. "The rain was comin' down like all the angels in heaven decided to take a piss at the same time. When you're in a situation like mine, you can only think in metaphors." (Dick Justice).
The Private-Eye Monologue is characterized by certain pronunciation and speech patterns that make it immediately recognizable. The most basic rule to remember is that it is a monologue, so it is spoken (not written), preferably in a deep chain-smoker baritone, so Barry's voice is perfect for this. The last (or second last) word in the sentence is emphasized, to make clear where it ends. Short, choppy sentences in past tense with little conjunction (buts, howevers, and therefores) between them are preferred, and the lexicon mainly consists of short, simple words; that's why such monologues are so super quotable.
Barry should should have given a bit more detail about his relationship to Bob however. He was more than just there at the time. He also served as media adviser for Bob Hawke.
Part of me thinks that Barry should also later on do a regular long-form documentary on this event, because there is just so much of a story here. I'm sure Barry would make a world-class documentary maker. But as for doing a short 4 minute summary goes, to insert into Charlie Pickering's show, absolutely brilliant. Well done Barry. You're one the most down-to-earth political experts of all time, a bloody genius, and with this clip, you obviously know how to have a little bit of fun with creative narratives.

Australia should be forever grateful to Hawke & Keating, both of whom were able to let go of their basic instincts to work for the better good of the Australian Society.
History will remember both of them kindly.
