  • Australian Story celebrates the extraordinary life and career of Bob Hawke, Australia’s most popular prime minister, who died aged 89.
Hawke won four elections, becoming Labor’s longest-serving prime minister and overseeing profound economic and social reform. Eventually Hawke's fruitful relationship with treasurer Paul Keating soured and he lost the leadership of the party, bringing to an end a stellar career
This intimate portrait features extensive archive, including rare photos from the family’s private collection, and revealing interviews with Hawke, his biographer and second wife Blanche D’Alpuget and his three children.

It's kind of sad that there can be a person known as "the people's PM" because ideally, all PMs should be representatives of the people.

I am not a labour voter, but Bob Hawke was a legend. Bob had a well lived life. I met him in 2014 at a function and he was great. He was witty, intellectual and interesting. He has a common touch, but he was cut above the rest of us. His Cabinet in the 1980s was the best this country had 🇦🇺👍🏻😀

He kept it real. Despite being a Rhodes scholar he had no posh accent, didn't show off his wealth, he was not condescending towards ordinary Australians. Politicians like Kevin Rudd, Alexander Downer & Christopher Pyne could not hide the disgust they felt towards ordinary Australians and couldn't wait to get away. Hawke would be amongst the people, having a laugh and would stay all day. He had to be dragged away. People feel it. That's why he was so loved.

Bob Hawke and Paul Keating made a formidable team, but unfortunately Paul put his own needs and desires ahead of that of the country and that was a big mistake. I am a British conservative but I follow politics of the CANZUK countries closely and I have enormous respect and particular fondness towards Bob Hawke. He had such profound personal qualities and he achieved a huge lot including some necessary economic reforms for the future. Paul Keating was important to this revolution too and the Hawke-Keating partnership is quite legendary even if it ended bitterly. Blair and Brown are blown out of the water by the Australian pair discussed above.
