      Was gonna say you should post the video link on your reverb/ebay pages but these sold before you posted the videos up. Should wait before you post it for sale so you can take advantage of the video work to showcase the guitars. seems a waste to do the work then not use it.

    I love that this is the guitar the sellers' mom bought for her son. My mom bought me an Ovation Magnum bass when I started getting really interested in playing. I took it as a vote of confidence from her-- and it meant the world to me... Until it was stolen years ago. Whenever I see one, I think of that selfless love that the gift of that guitar represented. Do you have the original information like sales receipt or did you ever write down the serial number if that model has one. Jah Wobble of P.I.L. still plays them and I look at them every now and again. Nothing worse than the parasitic scum that is a thief, a Guitar is very personal so it's a huge violation and retribution is in order and justice should always prevail. I have had a Yamaha SG stolen back in '85-86 out of my apartment. I found out who did it. It was anole friend that got into Heroine, he had his scumbag buddy go in my house. My older brother grabbed his Gat and we got the truth out of him. Then a few years later, His '57 Gibson Les Paul Jr. that was my other brothers was stolen by another Burnout Crackhead Scumbag and I returned the favor and drove my same brother to his house and he said; Wait here and keep the Car running. He broke his arm. That guy was another Douche that I actually went to school with. Stupid F***** actually took it to Guitar Center in Azusa,CA. and got like 150.00 bucks and they took a photo of his Drivers License. So he went to Jail, and got f***** up and a broken arm for a night of Crack. I always like it when someone gets their gear back but so many times we don't. I never did. These are the facts and they are undisputed. Don't steal, and lock your gear up, and get a storage unit. Be careful who you associate with and share your info with. My good friend Dewey had a '63 Firebird and his Half-Brother stole it and pawned it for gambling money ? He never got it back. These stories are unfortunately fairly common. It's kind of sad to see an original owner have to sell his first Guitar from his mother but life throws us curve balls and you can't judge a man for having hard times and being the sole parent of multiple children. A lot of people are having a hell of a time right now with this COVID mess.

    I wonder how close to the originals they will be. The paint was a discontinued GM automobile paint. I’ve talked to the original finishers back in the day at Heritage Guitar in Kalamazoo. Not too sure if it will be the same metallic paint on the new AJ reissues or how close to feel, sound, and manufacturing they will be. Nothing beats the originals.

    • @hkguitar1984
      @hkguitar1984 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think part of the reason GM discontinued that paint was due to EPA Regulations.
      Back in 1979 I purchased a brand new White Pearl 25th Anniversary Stratocaster. Within a year the finish turned cream colored.
      Fender told me that had switched to new paint in 1978 and 1979 due to stricter EPA regulations and the white pearl finish on my Stratocaster hadn't been fully sorted out yet! 7 years later Fender had me take the guitar to an Authorized Fender Repair Facility in Akron Ohio to have it refinished to factory specs with the new Anniversary Decal plastered across the front top horn of the guitar.
      Way to go Fender, standing behind their quality even many years after the fact.
      Point being the EPA must have been a huge PITA for Fender and Gibson.

    Fun Fact the first ever silver burst made was for Charlie Christian, it was to match the bandstands and drums the Benny Goodman orchestra was using at the time. With even the (upright) bass player having a silver burst. Apparently that version was based in the Gretsch drum finish.
    Christian didn't seem to like the finish, as when he left Goodman to form his own group he special ordered a natural finish guitar, and used natural finish guitars for the rest of his life. As for his silver burst it's lost.
    Silverburst would show up on Jazz guitars before the 70s, mostly I'd assume custom orders although pre 78 it was often listed as 'Ash Burst' which I believe is what Gretsch call it.

    I bought my LP Custom used around 1980. I still have the stand that came with it, and I will alway use it with that guitar because it hasn't left any rash in over 40 years. I understand that the rash is caused by outgassing of chemicals from the padding on stands. I wonder how long you have to age one so that it wouldn't damage nitro finishes, I don't think this is a problem with poly.

    You should have thrown in a Seymour Duncan distortion to really compare it to the Jones reissue. These had 300k and .15 caps. Adam has 500k and .022. But im sure for resale value you’ll want to keep the original stuff. Just figured id let ya know!

    Very cool! I’ve got a ‘78 black beauty. That thing is pushing 12 pounds! I actually don’t play it much anymore for that and some other reasons, but I’ll never sell it because of sentimental value.
    I remember buying it in the early days of eBay for 1200 bucks. There were silverbursts going for about the same back then. I wish I had picked one of those up too!

    What a score. The owner seemed like a good dude, also. I've bought a few guitars from good people who fell on hard times. I have an original 1978 silver burst.
    I am the original owner
    Purchased it when I was 15 years old with my father from Manny’s Music in NYC , (the same day I also picked up a fender twin reverb) the guitar is all
    original except I changed the frets a few years ago.
    The original frets where very low ,not worn out, originally made low. I learned a couple of years ago , that type of low fret board was call the “fretless wonder”.
    Did Gibson make all 1978s silverburst with these low frets?

    • @Jficklen
      @Jficklen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 1980 and it also has low frets. I also thought these were the “fretless wonder” frets but later learned those were actually much lower than what are used on these. Nevertheless, I still prefer larger frets and plan on refretting my 1980 Silverburst

    Hey Austin, first and foremost i like to say I do enjoy your in depth videos on Gibsons. Anyway, i have a 1987 Les Paul Custom Lite and I'm not sure if the pickups are Tim Shaw's or Gibson's and it has the "Pat No. 2,737, 842" and no date stamps on the back. Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you. Keep up the good work. - Patrick

    I can relate to all of this. I have an 81, bought brand new from Chuck Levin's with my grass-cutting money when I was 16. Pretty sure of the price, $678. Back then, when you entered Levin's and looked to your right, the first guitars along that wall were all Les Paul's, and I was lusting after one. But when I saw the Silverburst, that was IT!! Mine has more playing wear than his though. I wore completely through the neck, right down to bare wood. It has that same greenish tint and the binding has yellowed. Adam Jones said he thought the finish gave it some unique tone. I don't know about that, but it does sound amazing through a cranked Marshall! But it's a hard guitar to play. I pretty much retired it after I got a PRS Custom 24.

    Bought an Ibanez GRG170DX or GiO as its known to some people. It's missing the middle single coil pickup supposedly the guy would get shocked when he played in that position but he admitted he used the pickup for a shovel guitar. And the thing was filthy top to bottom with some kind of grime . Don't know if that what he thinks grunge is about. It's more or less a project. Has dragons blood pickups at the neck and the bridge and I bought a new single coil to replace the one removed.

    Whenever I get a used guitar, the fingerboard is always covered in black gunk. Just layers of hand filth. I use medium grit steel wool first then fine grit steel wool with lemon oil last. The fine grit takes out any lines the medium scratched into it. You can do it with just fine grit but it takes more time and elbow grease.

    That model was the first Les Paul I ever played. A friend of mine owned it, and he left it at our drummer's house. I hated it--it wouldn't stay in tune, and the tone was really muffled. The latter was mainly because I was using it with the wrong amp (an ultralinear Fender Pro Reverb). It put me off Les Pauls for several years. Fortunately I came to my senses later, and discovered some really great ones.
