  • Just a quick DIY video on how to make a coconut shelter for the aquarium or terrarium. Cost = $2-$5. As far as tools you can do this with a hammer, screwdriver, knife, and spoon. Though it would be beneficial to have a drill and a saw. 1) remove fibers, 2) drill and drain milk, 3) split the shell in two, 4) boil 5-10 min.s 5) remove the meat, 5) boil again to remove tannins if you need to and you're done.
    Questions Welcome :).

star50168AJ Whoops, I may have deleted your comment on accident, sorry. Fancy guppies are great! I have had many over the years. I would recommend a 20 gallon tank for several reasons & you can find them in this video I just made along with a bunch of info on aquarium tools and equipment. th-cam.com/video/QR5ysu0AB14/w-d-xo.html Let me know how your guppies work out :)

Thank you! The coconut will last a very very long time in your tank. I've had mine in my tank for over 4 years with no change.

it's a nice tip for some, that they can make a coconut shell hut for theyr aquarium themselves, instead of paying silly prices for it, but you are making it a but harder than necessary ;)
just poking in a screwdriver is enough to drain the milk. it is a good idea to saw in a break line, when you tap that line with the "sharp" side of a hammer for a few minutes, it will break more controllable, than when you crack it using a lot of force.
if you have an electric sander handy, coconut shells look great when sanded smoothly or even polished. but it's not something i would want to do by hand, that stuff is crazy hard.
