Mary Harron is such a pioneer and legendary filmmaker. In my opinion she gets very little credit for being one of the first acclaimed female directors.
Not really. She's kind of a one-hit wonder, to be honest. I think a lot of us thought she was a filmmaker to look out for when I Shot Andy Warhol and American Psycho first came out, but since then, all her films pretty much flew under the radar. To me, she seems like someone who'd be better fit to teach as a university film professor than an actual filmmaker now.
I had the privilege of meeting Mary Harron at the Maine International Film Festival in 2006, when she was screening her then-newest film "The Notorious Bettie Page". I was pleasantly surprised by how gracious and genuine she was. I only regret not asking her for film recommendations based on this video.
Great one. Was surprised at her Cassavettes pick! Not that I don't love that one! Both versions! (the Criterion has both!). Poignant little moment remembering Nancy Spungen, wasn't expecting that.
American Psycho would be a worthy addition to the Criterion Collection. Bale's performance is absolutely iconic and Harron's direction is laser-focused, allowing a pitch-perfect balance of black comedy, slasher gore, and social satire.
The Notorious Bettie Page is so underrated, and probably one of the most visually beautiful films ever. I hope one day it gets a Criterion release. Not your typical biopic, she's an incredibly thoughtful filmmaker. In my top 10, and really enjoyed seeing her enthusiasm in this video.
One of the greatest directors of all time. American Psycho, a movie about alienation and disconnection, it will be watched for thousands of years if not until the end of human civilization.
Will criterion ever do a release of American Psycho? It’s in my opinion, her best film and by far my favorite of all time and I would kill to get a really good commentary of her and Bret Easton Ellis on the Blu-ray.
I love Mary i wish she could get some Indy funding and crank out a bunch of quiche loraine films much in the same way as Corman........i do love Mary..... 🕊️
I VERY MUCH WISH Criterion Collection would give a quality release on DVD and Blu-ray of Drugstore Cowboy. Finally, someone praised the incredible Lost Highway (Lynch).
I shot Andy Warhol, one of the best American movies of the 90s, is still not even available in HD Bluray, let alone 4K. How about getting on that, Criterion?
I love love love her Sam Fuller nods. The man made films that felt real, surprising, meaningful and something many films in that closet are not......entertaining.
A decent-sized chunk of it is, but some titles will rotate in and out each month. But on top of that, the larger selling point for the Criterion Channel is the plethora of films they have or get digital rights for that aren't physically in the Collection.
.. and so many of those newer releases have MADE IN MEXICO stamped on the product .. Criterion tries so hard to come across as inclusive and woke, but when the chips are on the table, sweatshops and underpaid labor be damned .. Perhaps Indicator will release a movie about a big, hypocritical company that abandons the local people and ships manufacturing across the border to increase profits while exploiting an area that will accept being paid slave wages .. Coming soon from Indicator Powerhouse films RULES FOR THEE, BUT NO FOR ME : The Criterion Connection
Impressive, very nice. Let's see Paul Allen's picks.
That will never get old!
🤣🤣🤣
_Do you like Huey Lewis & The News?_
@@Jimmy1982Playlistseverytime I hear that something terrible happens 💀
😅
Never seen anybody climb that high in the Criterion Closet reaching for a film. Good for you Mary. Great choices.
It appears you haven't seen all these closet videos then!
WEB CLOSET HARRON H264 is such an inspiration, I'm so glad she's featured
Mary Harron is such a pioneer and legendary filmmaker. In my opinion she gets very little credit for being one of the first acclaimed female directors.
Far from one of the first
@@triplejazzmusicisall1883 American Psycho is good, the rest not so much

I think of Elaine May and Penny Marshall as being earlier great female directors
@@Dogy0909 Most of all Leni Riefenstahl, Maya Deren and Agnes Varda are the early and important female directors.
omg i can’t believe they got WEB CLOSET HARRON H264 definitely one of my fav directors
Oh my god, did they really do that again??
Love her take on Lost Highway - "the life that you have and I have every night in dreams"
I love to see Mary Harron's enthusiasm for Lost Highway! It's an unbelievable film that is totally worth experiencing.
Wonderful director. Although I think they forgot to title the video properly.
The opposite of having to return some video tapes... greats picks from a great director!

The director of American Psycho in the Criterion Closet. That's amazing and amusing.
Would love for AP to be added to the Collection! 😁 I saw it in an empty theater when it came out and knew it'd eventually reach cult status...
This finally solved my painfully unanswered question of whether criterion closets are exported as H264 or ProRes files. Whew 😌case closed

It’s a shame her movie I Shot Andy Warhol went out of print (DVD) and there’s been no physical release for quite awhile. Not even on streaming.
It was by MGM
@@dontgetnastybro it’s out of print now
It was. I own a copy. Never been released on streaming or blu-ray.

She's absolutely wonderful. I'll be checking out her picks!

Lionsgate currently holds the rights to it.

I actually met with her recently and she's currently in the process of securing the funding for her next film! Hopefully set to shoot in August... ;)
I have to return some -video tapes- 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs.
I love Harron's movies, most especially the criminally underrated The Notorious Bettie Page.
I'm going to watch all of these. Thank you!
I VERY MUCH WISH Criterion Collection would give a quality release on DVD and Blu-ray of Drugstore Cowboy. Finally, someone praised the incredible Lost Highway (Lynch).
Lost Highway! My favorite film!
I hope she’ll release a new film soon! ❤
Lost Highway… taste ❤
I'll hold out for the x265
Didn't know she was Canadian and that she directed a great episode of Six Feet Under back in the day.
Great title lmao
She's changed the scene forever
She's a David Lynch fan which is kind of cool, because I always thought he should have directed American Psycho.
Lost Highway🔥
When you let the intern upload the video 😂
Loved I shot Andy Warhol. I miss that independent 90s feel from movies
This is perfection!
I shot Andy Warhol, one of the best American movies of the 90s, is still not even available in HD Bluray, let alone 4K. How about getting on that, Criterion?

The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, great choice.

She's dreamy! The Notorious Bettie Page rocks!
When's 'American Psycho' gonna get the Criterion treatment? It's a masterpiece.
2nd time in the last couple of videos Sid & Nancy is picked. Wonder what the most selected movie is...
Love the editor title
My Man Godfrey is a great film.
Top shelf! In every respect 😉. Criterion, I SHOT ANDY WARHOL is overdue!!! Get on it!!!
The great Mary Harron!!!
HOT TAKE: _Lost Highway_ is better than _Mulholland Dr._
Will forever be among my favorite Lynch films!
You guys need to fix the title on this video its showing as "WEB CLOSET HARRON H264"

She directed “American Psycho” and “I shot Andy Warhol”
The Great Mary Harron.
Its my favourite Cassevettes film too.
This was lovely
Does anyone know if the entire Criterion collection is available for streaming on their channel? I sure hope so.

Director of The Notorious Bettie Page and 70s punk journalist.
For once, I've seen ALL of 'em!
0:37 Based!
Is this part 1 of a 10 part series? Because Mary never got past the first section...
FINALLY!!!!!! The QUEEN!!!
There are no comedies like those of the '30s and '40s... almost all the best comedies belong to those two decades!
Get a blu ray player Mary!😆
Queen
Yes...
James Gray video pls
Do you like Huey Lewis and the News?
Sure do. One of my favorite music groups of the 1980's.
Finally! Someone talented!
I wonder if she's seen all the Patrick Bateman sigma memes
Nice to see a Canadian filmmaker in the Closet considering not many Canadian films make it into the Collection.
She and her picking seems to me less affected than a lot of them.
She is a total badass 🤟❤️🤟
Of course her favorite Cassavetes is Killing lmao
Amazing film! Worth it for the Timothy Carrey performance alone 🙏
That guy... talk about _one in a million!_
@@Jimmy1982Playlists Oh yeah I don’t disagree, but being Mary’s favorite Cassavetes isn’t shocking.

I heard this cute grandma directed American Psycho. Is it true?
Every time someone picks a Cassavetes film I say to myself: Stop watching the video immediately.
Why?
Goes over your head, huh? lol
