Thanks for NOT doing a bunch of sound samples. There's no way to really hear what an instrument sounds like over the internet. Too many factors affect the sound. The conversation was excellent, speaking about the various scenarios for which someone might want an acoustic, and the applications thereof. Nice work, thank you.

Glad we think the same way! You’re exactly the kind of person for whom I made the video.

Of all the acoustic basses out there, the closest I've heard to sounding like an upright is actually a fretless Uke bass with silicone strings, however, none of these instruments put out enough volume unplugged except the long discontinued Ernie Ball Earth bass (and few sound like an acoustic once plugged in except the aforementioned Uke bass).

Hm! Interesting! Not the first time I've heard that, so it makes me want to try it out for myself, but as you wrote, it's impractical. I want my bass heard acoustically, but if I didn't I'd have stuck with the Ibanez!

Bought the 500F 2 years ago and haven’t put it down since. Sound and playability are fantastic, you get the mwah!!! 🤪

Right!? Amazing bass!! If I always played through an amp, it would be the only fretless I own!

I use my ibanez srh500F w/ labella tapewound strings whenever I cannot or do not want to haul my upright, bands love it.

Do you love it too? Or do you prefer the real deal?

I'm interested in trying out a fretless, and to get upright-ish sounds. Have you ever tried any of those small acoustic Uke-basses? Would you recommend them?

Thanks for watching. No, I've never tried those uke basses, but I've seen someone on TH-cam and although they lack the "mwah" they sound pretty thumpy like an upright! I'd have to actually try one out to be sure, but my opinion now is that I think it would be a fun toy. I wouldn't play it live; the scale is too small and they're not loud enough to play acoustically, and I wouldn't plug it in either, so just for fun. Maybe someday.

"Bass players when you go to the campfire, just play acoustic guitar" Gem comment :)

If you want an acoustic bass guitar to use amplified, you really should get one with a magnetic pickup. Piezos alone have a clacky sound that will always sound artificial. There are some things you can do with compression to help. You can also use an EHX attack decay pedal, in parallel to dry signal to tame that clack. But the best solution is a magnetic bridge pickup.
If you want an acoustic bass guitar for recording, get a Martin, use flatwounds or tapewounds.

Hey! Thanks for your comment. I'm sure it's good for people to read because I did not mention it and I actually disagree - I don't like the sound of magnetic pickups. But that's why I like your comment. You're not wrong! Many people would prefer your way I'm sure so thanks for sharing. I agree that some piezos can sound artificial. It depends on the bass, and the ear. And oddly I always use compression when I record, but never when I play live. Maybe I should.

Wanted to get a fretless bass. For me, the ibanez sounds great. What can you say about using the bass with a decently sized amp to bring to a jazz band?

The Ibanez is amazing and if I only played amplified that is definitely the one I’d choose. The sound samples in this and 2 other videos on my channel using the Ibanez are directly to DAW. With an amp - WOW! Sounds even better. There is a great video on TH-cam of a guy playing through an amp with a drummer. In fact the reason I didn’t use any amp or eq or comp in my videos is because everyone else did. I wanted to add clean videos for people.

Acoustic bass for a upright sound is a Takamine 10, those basses you have are garbage. Lol!

EVERYONE! This person is right - The Takamine B10 is an amazing bass! Check out the link below and do a search. For me, the size and the radius of the fretboard make it a little bulky, but I'm sure I could get used to it. Problem is, I couldn't find one for sale anywhere in Japan. And they're made here!! LOL

I used to own a TB10. Excellent instrument. I installed actual upright strings on it, and it was wonderful. Only problem was that it led me to playing upright acoustic bass, so it stopped getting played. So I sold it.
