As a professor of sound engineering, I teach the scientific and procedural fundamentals of recording technology and practice. I do not guide the creative direction of my student, but rather I encourage the student to express themselves. Now to be forthright, most of my students will never become audio engineers. Too many of them come to college to get credentials in something that tickles their curiosity in order to get a job. But that is not likely to work out for them as an audio engineer. What they lack is a hungry vision, a sense of meaningful purpose, and a desire to excel at the art of audio production. However, in the end, the student who is inspired will learn in my classroom. But, in truth, they could learn anywhere. If they have the motivation to overcome naïveté and the aptitude, they can do this on almost any path they choose. Yes, the scientific insights and practical approaches are learned by most of my students. And this knowledge is essential, but what makes someone an audio engineer requires far more than just the knowledge, they need an undenied love to create. And if they have that, the knowledge will come to them when they seek it from wherever it can be found.

@@michaelbrindley3487 thanks, I would emphasize that a formal education CAN BE superior to an informal education. However that is only true for those who were already on that path. All others are likely wasting their time. And unfortunately, a formal approach to education can also be dumbed down by the professor in order to accommodate the less serious student. If the professor is watering down the instruction, it is time to either go elsewhere or use the opportunity to do far more than what the professor demands.

I have to agree with Joe. I realized too late into music school that i was way more into production and song writing than playing what professors tell you to. I'm thankful that i kept going though, I'm an elementary music teacher now and it is probably the most fun i have ever had working. Yes my dream has slowed down a bit because i am so much busier than in college, but i have the security and comfort so i can continue working on my music and learning about music production. I feel like these videos and tips and courses and books we have available online, thanks to people like you, are helping so many people like me realize that we can learn at our own pace and still keep that dream alive.

Joe, I’ve been following you for about a year now, since I pulled my old AudioBox USB out of the closet and fired up Studio One Artist again. I very quickly saw that you are ideologically motivated to help others. Your instruction is selfless, super informative, and really useful to eager learners like me. (Active hobbyist) Value indeed. I’m now almost a month into being part of your VIP forum, and I have to say I am proud to chip in my tiny contribution to your mission. That April 2021 livestream was a most engaging two hours, but the best part was your generosity and obviously genuine level of stoke. The connections I’m making with like-minded people in the forum is well worth the small investment. But far more than that is the association with you, sir. You are an authentic light in the world, and we need more like you. Thank you for what you do.

I’m very lucky in that I work self employed as a software developer, which means I have the perfect excuse for my own space in the house to work (I built a log cabin in the garden).
Therefore I can maintain it as a studio environment as that’s my passion, as long as I keep the desk clear for my day job! And it’s fine to have people come in to record them.
Over the years I’ve been able to do paid audio/video work for people, that’s the joy of being self employed - having the flexibility to mix work which makes you tick, if you have the chance you can shuffle things around - something you can’t do in fixed employment as it would involve booking holiday/time off.
But you have to work hard and be disciplined, and it’s easy to lose family time as work and home overlap incredibly easy.

Hey Joe! I went to MTSU for Recording Industry in the mid-90s. I didn't finish the program and ended up changing my major because I really just wanted to write songs. At one time, I regretted not sticking with the recording major. I continued to write songs and wanted to record them but didn't feel very confident in my abilities. However, I have learned a ton from watching you and others on TH-cam. A few years ago I began setting up my home studio and feel much more confident now about recording because of your tutorials. Amazingly well said man. Not rambling at all, as I think this is something that many people absolutely need to hear. Loads of people these days are graduating with thousands in debt and then not even working in those domains, and I do believe that getting out there and practicing the thing for four years with the correct guidance might be more efficient than going to college for four years. But sometimes, it takes time for people to realize what they want to do. Again, priceless advice here. Extra points for being inclusive of the "she"s in this industry!

I go to audio school and interestingly, because I love doing this so much and do a lot of extra stuff, I find that I am often really ahead. It's a kind of thing where if you are invested in it enough, the school starts to really feel not as essential because you're doing stuff aside from school so much. Today in class when learning about how to use a Midas 32, it felt like so much being explained was stuff I had already learnt myself on my own mixing desk.

Now I cannot afford to go into a studio and have another engineer/producers do what I basically can do myself...Now I watch Joe all the time and many other tutorials but I do not have a systematic process or understanding why I want to adjust equalizers and when and where to place my compression in an unformed set way...I think taking an engineering/production course as well as watching Joe all the time will give me a better understanding...it is easy to learn how to play a song guitar watching a tutorial (But I have been playing guitar for 25 years)!

I have been working in sound since 1989 - I did my general music degree (very little studio work covered) - but I loved electronics, synths and recording - way back in the days of 8 track reels - I never learned the "physics" of sound - but I built a studio and recorded any type of aound you can think of - music and soundtracks/dubbing for film ADR and sound design.
I ended up as a freelance and have done sound work for the BBC - not because I had done all the courses etc - I learned my craft of years of experience.... so yes it works even if you never went to uni :)

Agreed! I went to The Recording Workshop for their 2 month program. Moved to Nashville and did the assistant engineer thing for 2 years. Now I'm a librarian. go figure :-) Was recording school useful? Sure - I learned a bunch of stuff. Did it get me a job? Sorta kinda. Ultimately, the wife and I wanted a steady check and insurance. And I occasionally use my recording experience at work (setting up a podcast studio, for example). And I do my own stuff for fun, play at church, etc. Today, I'd probably just go for it on my own - no recording school needed.

Joe, great content. I appreciate it. Keep it up. Question. I hear a lot that I need to listen to my mixes on a variety of sounds systems - monitors, cars, headphones, etc. to be sure the song sounds good on all of them. So the question is - what are some common changes to the mix to make a song sound good on all these. I know it's a broad question but there must be some general strategies you can share. Thanks!

  • @Nathan_Lundstrom

I have a 4-year degree in audio engineering. Now that I’ve been out of school for three years, the degree has meant nothing. The school I was at is now closed, 99% of my friends who graduated with me are still working 30-40hrs/week at day jobs (GuitarCenter, Apple, Uber, etc) and are doing music on the side - some aren’t even doing music and are going back to school for computer science degrees.
The value that $30k/year my degree brought me is the networking experience. I met people who are making huge waves in music whether it’s touring, TH-cam creators, engineering for A-list pop artists, or making their own music. It’s amazing to see that journey happen alongside them!
The downside to that whole story is that their music degree didn’t hold any weight into their career - it was their portfolio and the time they put into their craft. If I would have thought at the beginning that I only needed to show people what I could do, not my certifications, I would have spent the four years at school taking private lessons, interning at studios, writing my own music, finding my own clients to work with. When you’re at school you’re stuck in the bubble of school and that network. Reach outside of it to meet local artists, local engineers, local producers. I’d almost say to NOT work with people in school, or not make it a priority to work with people in school, but don’t say no? At the end of the day, you can choose which group you’re prioritizing with your network.

Great practical advice. I think that music schools have 2 serious flaws: first the professors are usually not active in the industry and its rare to get a professor who has the grammy awards covering his office walls. Having said that, sometimes the best engineers are actually terrible teachers (CLA, Clearmountain, etc.). Second, 3 to 5 years after graduating from engineering school, the technology has advanced so much that most of what you learned in school is stale. The concepts may still be relevant - but there's a truckload of great courses online (yours included) that can bring you pretty far up the ladder in terms of being able to produce competitive mixes. What's missing would be an interactive service that brings a reasonable number of advanced students together where you occasionally share a mix and get feedback from the instructor on how to take things up a few notches. Or it can be a one on one service. Say you agree to have 3 mixes reviewed for a reasonable fee. The review is not only about the mixing (making a great mix sound awesome), but can be about the arrangement, the production itself. Then you could be a go-between with some session players to fill in for mediocre vocals or solos, which would be a separate fee and service. Now if you could place the best songs in media by networking with supervisor and music editors that would be great. I'm taking a course with Chris SD over at The Art of the Song Pitch for this purpose. As for myself, I just want to place a few of my best songs in media while continuing to or trying to write good music.

Im trying very best to educate her so she can make the most informed decision possible. She is extremely talented artist and plays many instruments but that is besides the point. Its how to make money! And is it worth the mountain of debt to go to one of these schools. The most common thing i have seen from all kinds of videos on this subject is that there is no job waiting for you after "education" but rather you will have to find gainful employment doing something else totally unrelated. The most common end goal seems to be owning your own studio which that takes a long time to do. Great video....shes gonna be pissed when she watches it lol

I don't know. Depends on the course. I have a mixing course and a production course. One for each.

VikingSenso That’s dope I’m at Full Sail right now as well. I’m also in the Audio Production program. I graduate in A few months. Totally expanded my knowledge in so many different areas. I can literally do anything that involves audio. No limits!! I wouldn’t have had those choices if I didn’t go to school. They prepare you for many different careers. Not just one!

mastering an album or a body of work so that each track on said project can have an equally-like sounding tone in sound and in volume aesthetic while being played from the first track to the last although said project may contain tracks with different sounding mixes? 💔
