The problem with using matches as a demo is even a 1/10 watt laser will ignite a match, just cheating what separates the 'men from the boys; is burning white paper preferably not tissue and white balloons, but ALWAYS USE EYE PROTECTION even with the reflected light even off the white paper. Overall good video.

I noticed that the beam at distance had a pronounced line, instead of a point or dot. That power would have been spread across the line, hence your difficulty with burning at a distance. Seems to me that indicates a lower-quality laser.

A good 5W but cnc lasers are different and can be run for extended periods...handheld have the same diodes but due to their design and lack of fan etc cooling they have what is called cycle times on and off. For a 1W it's 3 to 5 minutes, for a 5W it's 1 to 2 minutes, a 7w they recommend no longer then 60 seconds!

    • @nighthawkviper6791

IDK what these noobs are talking about, but you can pick high wattage CNC lasers that cut through steel. Raytheon engineers created handheld lasers that can do more than blind a few years ago. Styropyro is cool and all but he doesn't have access to the metamaterials, lasing, budget, nor equipment that he would need to build something efficiently lethal.

There's a member named Exerd on LPF. He's not always active on the forum but I know for a fact he is currently producing some of the highest power lasers, because I visited his machine shop which is actually local to me and got to see first hand what he has been making and selling privately. He has a laser which uses 3*32650 batteries in a rather large flashlight host, using 4 NUBM44 V2(?) diodes that are knife-edged, prism corrected, and beam expanded to something crazy like 8-10x he said. He was hitting trees over 4000 yards away and I could easily see the actual dot that far away, and it was intense. I managed to get a photo from the next town over about 5 miles away of him shining it into the sky, and from 5 miles the beam draws a blue line all the way to what looks like infinity (although I know it isn't going that high in reality). The output of that specific laser was over 26 watts and used a PWM controller with temp sensor at the copper diode plate. The last one I'm aware of that actually sold went for close to $3500, so they aren't cheap by any means, but he uses commercial grade components from Thor and Edmund. So far I have seen nothing get close to that guys lasers but they seem non-existent on TH-cam. I'm going to have to drive out to his house and try to convince him to make a video because his lasers are out of this world. This laser reminded me of a much smaller, cheaper version of the work he does but these are still really nice looking for Chinese quality. I guess I didn't realize my sort-of neighbor was doing things above anything I've seen online, laser wise. (But could have to do with legality issues at such power levels, too.) Thanks for the video very interesting stuff; I love lasers *almost* as much as gen3 night vision, but not quite that much. ;)

The 1W blue gatling lasers there are sold by many different sellers but its pretty much all the same. There are two different types, one that needs 2x 16340 batteries and one that can be charged via USB. I got the one that takes the batteries so I dont know how good the other one is. Just make sure it has good ratings and many people bought it from the seller already, it should be fine then.

    • @zwattable

It won't have a brand of course, but you can build one for about $340. Host assembly for about 240 and a 7w nubm44 module for about 100. A small amount of soldering is required but nothing too crazy. And if you don't feel like going straight to 7w, you can build a 2w for about 120 bucks all in.
